ABSTRACT

A rural Indian population of 50,055 was studied for the detection of congenital orthopaedic anomalies by a door-to-door survey. An incidence of 2.25 cases per 1000 population was found. Club foot was the commonest anomaly at 0.9 per 1000, followed by polydactyly and syndactyly at 0.45 and 0.38 cases per 1000. The most common anomaly found in females was a congenital short 4th metatarsal (0.24 per 1000).

ABSTRACT

We describe fives cases of an unusual type of injury to the wrist which has been seen in Sikhs, an ethnic population in India. It is caused by entrapment of the kara, an iron bangle, which is traditionally worn as one of five compulsory religious symbols. The injuries were an open transtriquetral palmar perilunar dislocation, a double palmar radiocarpal dislocation, and a compound, grossly displaced anterior Galeazzi fracture-dislocation. Two cases had unclassified injuries.

ABSTRACT

Twenty-eight arthrodeses of the wrist were carried out for various indications using an ulnar graft. The results were evaluated and it was found that the obliquely resected lower end of the ulna gave a longer graft for better fusion between the distal end of radius and the base of the 3rd metacarpal. There was no instability of the inferior radio-ulnar joint, and rotation of the forearm was improved whenever it had been previously limited.

ABSTRACT

In a prospective study, 38 patients with so-called "wrist sprains" and a clinical nonradiological diagnosis of scaphoid fracture were immobilized in a plaster cast for 2 weeks. At 2 weeks, six patients were found to have a complete fracture of the scaphoid through the waist. In view of this high incidence (15.8%) of occult scaphoid fracture, it is once again suggested that all cases of wrist sprains where scaphoid fracture is suspected be immobilized for a 2-week period.

ABSTRACT

Resistant club foot remains an unsolved problem because of the complex aetiological and pathological factors, and is still seen quite frequently, especially in developing countries. The posteromedial skin contracture is a potent deforming force which is responsible for many failures or relapses. I report the results of an operation in which a rotation skin flap was combined with an extensive soft-tissue release. The age of the children was from 9 months to 10 years. The follow-up period was from one to 9 years with an average of 43 months, and in 50 cases for more than 5 years. I consider that the outcome has been excellent or good in 94 out of 100 feet.

ABSTRACT

All school children in Patiala City (25,376) were examined to find out the incidence of scoliosis. There were 12,934 boys and 12,442 girls. Their ages ranged from 5 to 18 years. Adam's forward-bending test and a newly designed "Scoliometer" was used to detect and measure the rib hump in all cases. There was an overall incidence of scoliosis of 0.13%. This was higher in boys (0.15%) than in girls (0.10%). The majority of the curves were mild (81.25%). Paralytic scoliosis was the major group (43.7%) and most the result of poliomyelitis. The incidence was higher in the low socioeconomic group (0.4%), compared to the middle (0.12%) and high (0.01%) income groups.

ABSTRACT

This is the first reported case from India of multicentric reticulohistiocytosis, manifesting as multiple cutaneous nodules on the face, ears, elbows, wrists, knees and hands with mild pruritus. Polyarthritis involved the small and bigjoints. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. All the lesions disappeared in 1 1/2 years time.

ABSTRACT

We report an interesting case of generalized papular and nodular lesions with central keratinous plugs and severe hyperkeratotic-acanthotic histopathology with arthritis in a 19-year-old male patient who had suffered from a similar disease 2 years earlier. Papules and nodules erupted a few days after the arthritis and this was noticed during both episodes. On healing, nodules fell spontaneously leaving behind insignificant hyperpigmented scars.

ABSTRACT

An interesting case of chronic paronychia of the big toe for the last 6 years resulting in granulomatous reaction and hypertrophy of nail plate and bed is being reported. An increased rate of longitudinal growth of nails may occur in association with infection around the nail, in bullous, ichthyosiform erythroderma and in psoriasis as already reported, but a unique feature in this patient was the increase in size of the nail plate in all directions, along with simultaneous increase in the surface area of the nail bed.
