ABSTRACT

AIM: The purpose of this present study is to compare the ability of MTA and Portland cement to seal furcal perforations in extracted primary molars using the dye extraction leakage model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty primary molars were selected and randomly divided into four groups after access openings and furcal perforations were created in the pulp chamber floor. Group I (n = 20) in which perforations were repaired with MTA (ProRoot MTA, MTA-Angelus), group II (n = 20) in which perforations were repaired with the Portland cement, group III (n = 10) in which perforations were left unsealed (positive control), and group IV (n = 10) without perforations (negative control). All samples were subjected to 1% of basic fuchsin dye challenge followed by dye extraction with 65 wt% of nitric acid. Samples were analyzed using the automatic microplate spectrophotometer 545 nm and the readings were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference in the microleakage between MTA and Portland cement repair groups. CONCLUSION: Portland cement provides an effective seal for primary teeth furcal perforations and can be considered a more economic substitute for MTA as a repair material enhancing the prognosis of perforated primary teeth that would otherwise be extracted. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study evaluates the fracture strength of pulpotomized primary molars restored with amalgam, miracle mix, cermet, resin-modified glass ionomer cement, and nanocomposites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty primary first and second molars were collected for this study. All the teeth were randomly divided into five groups (n = 10). Standard pulpotomy cavities were prepared. Teeth were air dried and the canal orifices were capped with a layer of zinc oxide eugenol. A lining of calcium hydroxide was placed over it. Amalgam, miracle mix, cermet, resin-modified glass ionomer cement, and nanocomposite were placed in groups I, II, III, IV, and V, respectively. All the samples were then subjected to the fracture strength test using the universal testing machine and the results were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: All the groups were compared by the ANOVA one-way test which indicated that there were statistically significant differences among the five groups. CONCLUSION: Nanocomposites can be considered to be the best restorative material in terms of fracture strength among amalgam, miracle mix, cermet, and resin-modified glass ionomer cement. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Patients with class II malocclusion generally seek orthodontic treatment for esthetic concern. Various myo-functionl appliances can be used for the treatment of skeletal as well as the dental malocclusion in a growing patient. Among various functional appliances, twin block appliance is most commonly used due to better patient compliances. It redirects the mandibular growth to correct the maxillomandibular relationship, enhancing facial esthet ics. This article presents a modified design of the twin block appliance which is less bulky, more esthetic, can be used concurrently with fixed orthodontic appliance, and is easily accepted by uncooperative patients. CASE SUMMARY: An 11-year-old-boy, who presented himself with a skeletal class II malocclusion, was treated with simultaneous use of fixed twin block along with fixed orthodontic appliance to correct both the skeletal and dental malocclusion. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the pH, buffering capacity, viscosity and flow rate of saliva in caries free, minimal caries and nursing caries children and to evaluate the relationship of these on the caries activity of children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 75 school children of age group between 4 and 12 years were selected and divided into three equal groups: Group I, Group II and Group III, consisting of 25 subjects each. Group I included caries-free subjects, Group II included subjects with minimal caries and Group III included subjects with nursing caries. Saliva samples were collected from all subjects and were estimated for flow rate, pH, buffering capacity and viscosity. RESULTS: There was a significant decrease in the mean salivary flow rate, salivary ph and salivary buffer capacity and a significant increase in the salivary viscosity among caries-free subjects, subjects with minimal caries and subjects with nursing caries. CONCLUSION: The physicochemical properties of saliva, such as salivary flow rate, pH, buffering capacity and viscosity, has a relation with caries activity in children and act as markers of caries activity.

ABSTRACT

Primary plasma cell leukemia is a rare form of plasma cell dyscrasia. We present a case which had leukocytosis with numerous circulating plasma cells in the peripheral blood. Flow cytometry revealed an unusual CD117 expression. Free light chain analysis in the serum showed a markedly elevated level of free lambda light chains. Radiography did not reveal any lytic lesions. Fluorescent in-situ hybridization analysis revealed deletion of 13q14.3 and t(4;14)/t(11;14), while the cytogenetic analysis was normal. The patient was given chemotherapy and was subjected to autologous stem cell transplant, after which she is in complete remission till date.
