ABSTRACT
The 'moving-screen' or 'pattern magnification' method of calibration for electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) was reformulated to develop a high-precision technique requiring no crystallographic knowledge of the specimen and no initial estimates of the calibration parameters. The technique depends upon the accurate displacement of the screen and camera assembly. Corresponding points are selected, interactively, from EBSD patterns. It is suggested that, as an alternative, the selection of points from the Hough transform could lead to a completely automated routine.
ABSTRACT
Frequently, letters, words and sentences are used in undergraduate textbooks and the popular press as an analogy for the coding, transfer and corruption of information in DNA. We discuss here how the converse can be exploited, by using programs designed for biological analysis of sequence evolution to uncover the relationships between different manuscript versions of a text. We point out similarities between the evolution of DNA and the evolution of texts.

A case is described in which a platelet count of 6,000,000/mm3 occurred in association with adenocarcinoma of the lung and remitted following definitive radiotherapy of the primary lesion. Despite the magnitude of the platelet elevation, thrombohemorrhagic phenomena were not observed. Extreme thrombocytosis of this magnitude is rare in either primary or secondary disorders of thrombopoiesis. The occurrence of unexplained thrombocytosis demands the exclusion of malignancy.
