ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the relationship between psychosocial factors and alcohol consumption among third-year students at a public technological higher education institute in Huaraz, Peru. Methods: The study utilized a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional and correlational design. A total of 232 students were assessed using an instrument adapted for this study, which demonstrated adequate levels of reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.82) and validity (Aiken's V = 0.92). Results: Regarding the main findings related to alcohol consumption, it was observed that 61.21 percent of the participants reported occasional alcohol consumption. In contrast, 31.48 percent reported no alcohol consumption, and 4.31 percent reported frequent consumption. In this regard, a significant relationship was identified between psychosocial factors and alcohol consumption among third-year students at a public technological higher education institute in Huaraz, Peru. Conclusions: The study concludes by examining the significant relationship between psychosocial factors, including sociodemographic, socioeconomic, sociocultural, and family variables, and alcohol consumption. Based on these findings, it is crucial to direct future research efforts towards addressing this issue(AU)


Objetivo: Analizar la relación entre los factores psicosociales y el consumo de alcohol entre estudiantes de tercer año en un Instituto de Educación Superior Tecnológica público en Huaraz, Perú. Métodos: El estudio utilizó un enfoque cuantitativo con un diseño transversal y correlacional. Se evaluó a un total de 232 estudiantes utilizando un instrumento adaptado para este estudio, el cual demostró niveles adecuados de confiabilidad (alfa de Cronbach = 0.82) y validez (V de Aiken = 0.92). Resultados: En cuanto a los principales hallazgos relacionados con el consumo de alcohol, se observó que el 61.21 por ciento de los participantes reportó un consumo ocasional de alcohol. En contraste, el 31.48% reportó no consumir alcohol y el 4.31 por ciento reportó un consumo frecuente. En ese sentido, se identificó una relación significativa entre los factores psicosociales y el consumo de alcohol entre estudiantes de tercer año en Instituto de Educación Superior Tecnológica público en Huaraz, Perú. Conclusiones: El estudio concluye examinando la relación significativa entre los factores psicosociales, incluyendo variables sociodemográficas, socioeconómicas, socioculturales y familiares, y el consumo de alcohol. Con base en estos hallazgos, es crucial dirigir futuras investigaciones para contrarrestar esta problemática(AU)

BACKGROUND: Even if women have intention to breastfeed, they do not always achieve a successful breastfeeding. AIM: This study aims to analyse factors affecting breastfeeding prevalence among mothers that intended to breastfeed. METHODS: This is a prospective observational study involving 401 pregnant women that intended to breastfeed (asked at the 20th week). Breastfeeding prevalence was evaluated in reference to health-related, socio-cultural factors and healthcare professionals' interventions at 1 month, 6 months and 12 months after birth. Data were analysed using descriptive statistical methods, bivariate logistic regression and multivariate logistic regression modelling. RESULTS: Independent factors negatively affecting breastfeeding prevalence related to mothers' and newborns' health parameters and birth characteristics included smoking during pregnancy, anaemia and use of analgesia during labour. Regarding sociocultural parameters, being an immigrant, higher education level, intention to breastfeed before pregnancy, comfort with public breastfeeding and bedsharing were positively linked to breastfeeding, while teat or pacifier use in the first week was negatively linked. Regarding healthcare professionals' practices, mother and father/partner antenatal education course attendance and exclusive breastfeeding at the hospital were positively associated with breastfeeding. CONCLUSION: Breastfeeding is a very complex phenomenon affected by multiple and diverse variables. Physiological factors only affect the short term (1st month), while middle and long term BF affecting variables are mainly identical and include mostly socio-cultural factors and also BF related practices, especially in the first days after birth. These data should help to develop more effective breastfeeding promotion strategies.

ABSTRACT

Resumen Introducción: la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) es el tipo más común de diabetes la cual ocurre generalmente en adultos, sin embargo, hay reportes que la describen en adolescentes y adultos jóvenes. Objetivo: describir las características clínicas y el tratamiento de la diabetes tipo 2 en adultos jóvenes en un hospital colombiano. Material y métodos: estudio de corte transversal entre el 2017 y 2019, que incluyó pacientes adultos jóvenes entre 18 y 40 años con DM2, que fueron atendidos en el Hospital Santa Mónica de Dosquebradas, Colombia. La unidad de análisis fueron las historias clínicas. Se incluyeron variables sociodemográficas, clínicas, farmacológicas y control metabólico (HbAlc < 7.0%). Se realizaron análisis descriptivos y se aplicó una regresión logística binaria (p< 0.05). Resultados: se identificaron 124 pacientes de los cuales 83 (70.0%) cumplieron criterios de inclusión, con una edad media de 33.7 ± 5.3 años. Unos 28 pacientes eran obesos (33.7%). Además, 21 pacientes (25.3%) presentaron control metabólico. Los fármacos más usados fueron metformina en 64 pacientes (77.1%), seguido de las insulinas en 46 pacientes (55.4%). Se estableció que 51 de estos (61.4%) presentaron adherencia al tratamiento. No hubo pacientes con terapia triple como estrategia terapéutica. Los pacientes con retinopatía diabética presentaban una probable asociación con tener control de la enfermedad en el momento del estudio (P=0.048, OR:0.130; IC95%:0.017-0.987). Abstract Introduction: type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the most common type of diabetes, generally occurring in adults. However, there are reports which describe it in adolescents and young adults. Objective: to describe the clinical characteristics and treatment of type 2 diabetes in young adults in a Colombian hospital. Materials and methods: a cross-sectional study from 2017 to 2019 which included young adult patients between 18 and 40 years old with T2DM who were seen at Hospital Santa Mónica in Dosquebradas, Colombia. The unit of analysis was the medical charts. Sociodemographic, clinical, pharmacological and metabolic control (HbA1c < 7.0%) variables were included. Descriptive analyses were performed, and binary logistic regression was applied (p<0.05). Results: 124 patients were identified, 83 (70.0%) of whom met the inclusion criteria, with a mean age of 33.7 ± 5.3 years. Some 28 patients were obese (33.7%). In addition, 21 patients (25.3%) had metabolic control. The most frequently used medications were metformin in 64 patients (77.1%), followed by insulin in 46 patients (55.4%). It was determined that 51 of these patients (61.4%) were compliant with treatment. No patients received triple therapy as a therapeutic strategy. Patients with diabetic retinopathy had a probable association with having the disease controlled at the time of the study (P=0.048, OR:0.130; 95%CI:0.017-0.987). ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to compare the immunohistochemical expression of tenascin-C (Tn-C) regarding clinicopathological variables and its association with the clinical behavior of central giant cell lesions (CGCLs). Forty-eight paraffin-embedded samples of CGCLs were selected. Based on clinical and radiographic features, the lesions were classified as aggressive (A-CGCLs) and non-aggressive (NA-CGCLs) subtypes. Histological assessment included the microvessel count (MVC), multinucleated giant cell (MGC) count, and the proportion of tissue area involved by mononuclear stromal cells/interstitial fibrosis. Immunoreactivity, immunolocalization, and distribution patterns of Tn-C were studied immunohistochemically. The association between Tn-C expression and clinicopathological characteristics was analyzed separately and adjusted for confounders using logistic regression models. A significantly greater proportion of cases with moderate-to-intense, intracellular, and diffuse staining of Tn-C was observed in A-CGCLs. CGCLs with a size ≥3.3 cm, fast growth, cortical disruption, high MVC/MGC counts, and low interstitial fibrosis showed a significantly greater frequency of moderate-to-intense, intracellular, and diffuse staining. Logistic regression analysis indicated a strong/independent association of these three immunohistochemical parameters with the aggressiveness of lesions. These data appear to suggest a possible role for Tn-C in the etiopathogenesis of CGCLs of the jaws, where its upregulation might favor the destructive behavior of A-CGCLs.

INTRODUCTION: In utero Zika virus (ZIKV) exposure has been related to a group of congenital structural abnormalities called the congenital Zika syndrome, which also has been related to neurodevelopment alterations even in normocephalic children. Physical growth has been less explored, and delayed growth and malnutrition have been reported. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to describe the growth and neurodevelopment features of normocephalic infants born from a cohort of mothers with RT-PCR confirmed ZIKV during pregnancy in Risaralda, Colombia. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort, including normocephalic children born from mothers with RT-PCR confirmed ZIKV infection during pregnancy in Risaralda, Colombia. Physical growth was measured using WHO standards, and neurodevelopment was measured with the abbreviated neurodevelopment scale 2 validated for Colombia. RESULTS: After verifying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 16 children were followed during a median time of 28 months (IQR 23-31 months); for a total of 116 visits, 87.5% (n = 14) of the patients developed a growth alteration. Five presented post-natal microcephaly, and among them, four presented malnutrition or low height. Six patients developed macrocephaly. Patients with a normal head circumference had normal neurodevelopment. Only one patient with microcephaly persisted with impairment of the neurodevelopment at the end of follow-up. All the patients with macrocephaly had normal neurodevelopment. DISCUSSION: Our study suggests that growth could be altered in infants with in utero Zika exposure. We found a high proportion of patients with overgrowth and macrocephaly. Future studies should consider endocrine follow-up of children born with in utero Zika exposure to explore these findings' possible aetiologies. CONCLUSION: We found a high proportion of growth alterations, particularly with overgrowth features and macrocephaly. Our study suggests that in addition to neurodevelopment impairment, growth could be altered in infants and children with in utero Zika exposure, even in those patients born without CZS.

ABSTRACT

A theoretical framework was developed and validated for the estimation of H2S concentration in biogas produced from complex sulfur-rich effluents. The modeling approach was based on easy-to-obtain data such as biological biogas potential (BBP), chemical oxygen demand, and total sulfur content. Considering the few data required, the model fitted well the experimental H2S concentrations obtained from BBP tests and continuous bioreactors reported in the literature. The model supported a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.989 over the experimental data, obtaining average and maximum errors of ~ 25 and ~ 35%, respectively. The theoretical framework yielded good estimations for a wide range of experimental H2S concentrations (0.2 to 4.5% in biogas). This modeling approach is, therefore, a useful tool towards anticipating the H2S concentration in biogas produced from sulfur-rich substrates and deciding whether the installation of a desulfurization technology is required or not.

ABSTRACT

Background: Undiagnosed congenital heart disease in the prenatal stage can occur in approximately 5 to 15 out of 1000 live births; more than a quarter of these will have critical congenital heart disease (CCHD). Late postnatal diagnosis is associated with a worse prognosis during childhood, and there is evidence that a standardized measurement of oxygen saturation in the newborn by cutaneous oximetry is an optimal method for the detection of CCHD. We conducted a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis comparing the operational characteristics of oximetry and physical examination for the detection of CCHD. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted on the following databases including published studies between 2002 and 2017, with no language restrictions: Pubmed, Science Direct, Ovid, Scopus and EBSCO, with the following keywords: oximetry screening, critical congenital heart disease, newborn OR oximetry screening heart defects, congenital, specificity, sensitivity, physical examination. Results: A total of 419 articles were found, from which 69 were selected based on their titles and abstracts. After quality assessment, five articles were chosen for extraction of data according to inclusion criteria; data were analyzed on a sample of 404,735 newborns in the five included studies. The following values were found, corresponding to the operational characteristics of oximetry in combination with the physical examination: sensitivity: 0.92 (CI 95%, 0.87-0.95), specificity: 0.98 (CI 95%, 0.89-1.00), for physical examination alone sensitivity: 0.53 (CI 95%, 0.28-0.78) and specificity: 0.99 (CI 95%, 0.97-1.00). Conclusions: Evidence found in different articles suggests that pulse oximetry in addition to neonatal physical examination presents optimal operative characteristics that make it an adequate screening test for detection of CCHD in newborns, above all this is essential in low and middle-income settings where technology medical support is not entirely available.

BACKGROUND: In many countries, economic assessments of the routine use of pulse oximetry in the detection of Critical Congenital Heart Disease (CCHD) at birth has not yet been carried out. CCHDs necessarily require medical intervention within the first months of life. This assessment is a priority in low and medium resource countries. The purpose of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness (CE) relation of pulse oximetry in the detection of cases of CCHD in Colombia. METHODS: A full economic assessment of the cost-effectiveness type was conducted from the perspective of society. A decision tree was constructed to establish a comparison between newborn physical examination plus pulse oximetry, versus physical examination alone, in the diagnosis of CCHDs. The sensitivity and specificity of pulse oximetry were estimated from a systematic review of the literature; to assess resource use, micro-costing analyses and surveys were conducted. The time horizon of the economic evaluation was the first week after birth and until the first year of life. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was determined and, to control for uncertainty, deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analysis were made, including the adoption of different scenarios of budgetary impact. All costs are expressed in US dollars from 2017, using the average exchange rate for 2017 [$2,951.15 COP for 1 dollar]. RESULTS: The costs of pulse oximetry screening plus physical examination were $102; $7 higher than physical examination alone. The effectiveness of pulse oximetry plus the physical examination was 0.93; that is, 0.07 more than the physical examination on its own. The ICER was $100 for pulse oximetry screening; that is, if one wishes to increase 1% the probability of a correct CCHD diagnosis, this amount would have to be invested. A willingness to pay of $26.292 USD (direct medical cost) per probability of a correct CCHD diagnosis was assumed. CONCLUSIONS: At current rates and from the perspective of society, newborn pulse oximetry screening at 24 h in addition to physical examination, and considering a time horizon of 1 week, is a cost-effective strategy in the early diagnosis of CCHDs in Colombia.Trial registration "retrospectively registered".

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to analyse cross-country differences in the maternal employment patterns and the demand for formal and informal child care as interrelated decisions across Europe. We explore a sample of preschoolers and their mothers drawn from the EU-SILC (2005-2013) in a set of 11 EU countries with different institutional settings. The analytical strategy - a set of simultaneous tobit models - allows for mutual interdependencies across decisions. The results vary across welfare regimes and are related to the public provision of child care as well as other dimensions of the institutional context and values. We have found complementarities between paid employment and child care while formal and informal care are shown to be mutual substitutes, even in countries where the provision of external, formal child care is very extended and child care does not depend much on families. This means that the mere expansion of public child care is not enough to improve maternal employment rates. Other institutional aspects of the labour market and societal values also need to be taken into account in this endeavour.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has emerged as a significant threat for pregnant women and newborns in populations living in or visiting Latin America. We previously reported a preliminary analysis in Sucre, Colombia, as the first group of pregnant women with RT-PCR-confirmed ZIKV (ZIKa enEmbarazadas yReciénNacidos enCOLombia, ZIKERNCOL). METHODS: In this second report, findings of the first 86 pregnant women from La Virginia and Dosquebradas (municipalities), Risaralda, Colombia, with RT-PCR-confirmed ZIKV infection are reported. Clinical, demographical and obstetrical findings are described. RESULTS: All women reported ZIKV symptoms during pregnancy: 79.1% rash, 55.8% fever, among others. In addition to ZIKV, RT-PCR was positive for dengue in 18.6%; 45.3% Dengue IgM+; 5.8% RT-PCR positive for chikungunya; 3.6% Chikungunya IgM+. STORCH screening in mother: 11.6% IgG + anti-Toxoplasma gondii, 6% IgG + anti-rubella, 4.7% IgG + CMV. The rest of STORCH tests were negative. Microcephaly was observed in 2.4% of the newborns. No calcifications or other CNS alterations were detected. One newborn had cleft palate and one had bilateral renal ectopy. CONCLUSIONS: The rate of microcephaly in our cohort was consistent with other studies. Pregnant women in endemic areas should be followed and tested according to standard protocols, and asymptomatic ZIKV infection should be considered. Long-term follow-up of children is required in the congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) assessment.

Background/Objective: There is strong evidence that genetic factors may affect the craniofacial morphology. This study aimed to examine the association between the rs6184 and rs6180 polymorphic variants of the growth hormone receptor (GHR) gene and skeletal-facial profile in a Colombian population. Subjects/Methods: Saliva samples from 306 individuals ranging in age from 15 to 53 (mean 24.33) years were collected. Cephalometric parameters were used to categorize the participants as Class I, Class II, or Class III skeletal-facial profile. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method was used to identify genotypes of the rs6184 and rs6180 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). The association of polymorphisms with the skeletal-facial profile was assessed separately and adjusted for confounding using a multivariate binary logistic regression model, alongside with analysis of linkage disequilibrium and haplotype associations. Results: Although individuals carrying the CA genotype of the rs6184 SNP showed both significantly decreased values for ANB angle and increased measures concerning mandibular body length and mandibular length, no significant differences amongst genotype groups of rs6180 SNP were observed. Moreover, chi-square test and logistic regression analysis revealed that the CA genotype of rs6184 SNP and the A-A haplotype were highly associated with Class III skeletal-facial profile. Conclusions: Although these results do not support that rs6180 SNP could be identified as a predictor for skeletal-facial profile, they suggest that the allele A of rs6184 SNP alone or in combination with other SNPs in the GHR gene yields significant horizontal and longitudinal variations of the mandibular morphology and might be a strong/independent prognostic indicator for Class III skeletal-facial profile in the present population.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of one-step temperature increase, from 35 to 55 °C, on the methane production of a mesophilic granular sludge (MGS) treating wine vinasses and the effluent of a hydrogenogenic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. RESULTS: One-step temperature increase from mesophilic to thermophilic conditions improved methane production regardless of the substrate tested. The biomethane potentials obtained under thermophilic conditions were 1.8-2.9 times higher than those obtained under mesophilic conditions. The MGS also performed better than an acclimated thermophilic digestate, producing 2.2-2.5 times more methane than the digestate under thermophilic conditions. Increasing the temperature from 35 to 55 °C also improved the methane production rate of the MGS (up to 9.4 times faster) and reduced the lag time (up to 1.9 times). Although the temperature increase mediated a decrease in the size of the sludge granules, no negative effects on the performance of the MGS was observed under thermophilic conditions. CONCLUSIONS: More methane is obtained from real agroindustrial effluents at thermophilic conditions than under mesophilic conditions. One-step temperature increase (instead of progressive sequential increases) can be used to implement the thermophilic anaerobic digestion processes with MGS.

Using a general solvent-free procedure for the synthesis of chiral Schiff bases, the following compounds were synthesized and their crystal structures determined: (S)-(+)-2-{[(1-phenyl-eth-yl)imino]-meth-yl}naphthalene, C19H17N, (1), (S)-(+)-2-({[(4-methyl-phen-yl)eth-yl]imino}-meth-yl)naphthalene, C20H19N, (2), (R)-(-)-2-({[(4-meth-oxy-lphen-yl)eth-yl]imino}-meth-yl)naphthalene, C20H19NO, (3), (R)-(-)-2-({[(4-fluoro-phen-yl)eth-yl]imino}-meth-yl)naphthalene, C19H16FN, (4), (S)-(+)-2-({[(4-chloro-phen-yl)eth-yl]imino}-meth-yl)naphthalene, C19H16ClN, (5), (S)-(+)-2-({[(4-bromo-phen-yl)eth-yl]imino}-meth-yl)naphthalene, C19H16BrN, (6), (S)-(+)-2-({[1-(naphthalen-1-yl)eth-yl]imino}-meth-yl)naph-thalene, C23H19N, (7), (S)-(+)-2-{[(1-cyclo-hexyl-eth-yl)imino]-meth-yl}naph-tha-lene, C19H23N, (8), (S)-(-)-2-{[(1,2,3,4-tetra-hydro-naphthalen-1-yl)imino]meth-yl}naphthalene, C21H19N, (9), and (+)-2-({[(1S,2S,3S,5R)-2,6,6-tri-methylbi-cyclo-[3.1.1]hept-3-yl]imino}-meth-yl}naphthalene, C21H25N, (10). The moiety provided by the amine generates conformational flexibility for these imines. In the crystals, no strong inter-molecular contacts are observed, in spite of the presence of aromatic groups.

ABSTRACT

A series of thio-phenes substituted in positions 2 and 5 by imine groups have been synthesized using a solvent-free approach, and their crystal structures determined. The substituents are chiral groups, and the expected absolute configuration for each mol-ecule was confirmed by refinement of the Flack parameter. The compounds are 2,5-bis-[(S)-(+)-(1,2,3,4-tetra-hydro-naphthalen-1-yl)imino]-thio-phene, C26H26N2S, (I), 2,5-bis-{[(R)-(-)-1-(4-meth-oxy-phen-yl)eth-yl]imino-meth-yl}thio-phene, C24H26N2O2S, (II), 2,5-bis-{[(R)-(-)-1-(4-fluoro-phen-yl)eth-yl]imino-meth-yl}thio-phene, C22H20F2N2S, (III), and 2,5-bis-{[(S)-(+)-1-(4-chloro-phen-yl)eth-yl]imino-meth-yl}thio-phene, C22H20Cl2N2S, (IV). A common feature of all four mol-ecules is the presence of twofold symmetry. For (I), which crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1, this symmetry is non-crystallographic, but for (II) in C2 and the isomorphous structures (III) and (IV) that crystallize in P21212, the twofold symmetry is crystallographically imposed with one half of each mol-ecule in the asymmetric unit. The comparable mol-ecular symmetry in the four structures is also reflected in similar packing, with mol-ecules aggregated to form chains through weak C-H⋯S inter-actions.

ABSTRACT

The anaerobic digestion of mixed indigenous microalgae, grown in a secondary effluent, was evaluated in batch tests at mesophilic (35°C) and thermophilic (50°C) conditions. Under mesophilic conditions, specific methane production varied from 178 to 207 mL CH4/g volatile solids (VS) and the maximum production rate varied from 8.8 to 26.1 mL CH4/(gVS day), depending on the type of microalgae culture. Lower methane parameters were observed in those cultures where Scenedesmus represents more than 95% of the microalge. The culture with the lowest digestion performances under mesophilic conditions was studied under thermophilic conditions. The increase in the incubation temperature significantly increased the specific methane production (390 mL CH4/g VS) and rate (26.0 mL CH4/(gVS day)). However, under thermophilic conditions a lag period of 30 days was observed.

Dental caries is an infectious disease which still constitutes a public health concern. It begins at an early age and is caused mainly Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). The aim of this study was to characterize the salivary humor immune response to S. mutans proteins in patients with caries, with history of caries and without caries, in order to determine which S. mutans proteins participate in the immunological response in subjects with different caries experience. Saliva was collected by spontaneous salivation for 5 minutes from 60 subjects aged 18 to 30 years, classified according to their caries experience as: without caries (Group I), with active caries (Group II) and with history of caries (Group III). The antigens derived from S. mutans by sonication were recognized by salivary IgA and IgG by Western Blot. The results showed that all the individuals studied recognized S. mutans proteins with molecular weights in the range of 8 to 191 kDa, with similar recognition profiles for salivary IgA and IgG. Subjects without caries recognized the 29 kDa protein, also known as S. mutans Antigen A, via salivary IgA, differing from patients with caries and history of caries, who recognized it via IgG. The protective response against S. mutans is mediated by IgA. To conclude, a differential response to the 29 kDa protein between study individuals may be indicative of resistance to dental caries and may have a protective role in the induction of IgA antibodies against dental caries, as found in the group without caries, in contrast to subjects with active caries and history of caries.

La caries dental es una enfermedad infecciosa que continua siendo un problema de salud publica, inicia a temprana edad y es causada principalmente por Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar la respuesta inmune humoral salival, ante las proteinas de S. mutans, en pacientes con caries, historia de caries e individuos libres de caries, para asi establecer que proteinas de S. mutans participan en la respuesta inmunologica en los diferentes estadios de caries. La saliva de 60 individuos entre 18 y 30 anos de edad, clasificados de acuerdo al estado de caries: libres de caries (grupo I), caries activa (grupo II) e historia de caries (grupo III), se colecto por salivacion espontanea durante 5 minutos. Los antigenos derivados de S. mutans por sonicacion, fueron reconocidos por IgA e IgG salivales por Western Blot. Los resultados mostraron que todos los individuos estudiados reconocen las proteinas de S. mutans en el rango de 8 a 191 kDa de peso molecular con perfiles de reconocimiento similares para IgA e IgG salival. Se encontro que los sujetos libres de caries reconocen por IgA salival la proteina de 29 kDa, tambien llamada Antigeno A de S. mutans, de manera diferente que los pacientes con caries e historia de caries quienes reconocieron la proteina via IgG. La respuesta protectora frente a S. mutans es mediada por IgA. En conclusion, una respuesta diferencial a la proteina de 29 kDa entre los individuos estudiados, puede ser indicativo de resistencia a la caries dental y tener un papel protector en la induccion de anticuerpos IgA frente a la caries dental, como se encontro en el grupo libre de caries, a diferencia de los sujetos con historia de caries y caries activa.

ABSTRACT

The feasibility of producing hydrogen from various industrial wastes, such as vinasses (sugar and tequila industries), and raw and physicochemical-treated wastewater from the plastic industry and toilet aircraft wastewater, was evaluated. The results showed that the tequila vinasses presented the maximum hydrogen generation potential, followed by the raw plastic industry wastewater, aircraft wastewater, and physicochemical-treated wastewater from the plastic industry and sugar vinasses, respectively. The hydrogen production from the aircraft wastewater was increased by the adaptation of the microorganisms in the anaerobic sequencing batch reactor.

BACKGROUND: The unpredictable behavior of giant cell lesions (GCLs) of the jaws parallels its controversial histogenesis. This study evaluated a possible association between the immunohistochemical expression of NF-ĸB, the inhibitory subunits IĸBα/IĸBß, and clinicopathological variables with the behavior of central and peripheral GCLs of the jaws. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Paraffin-embedded samples of GCLs of the jaws (n = 68) were prepared for histological/immunohistochemical assessment. Demographic and clinicopathological parameters were assessed to determine the behavior of the lesions. A staining-intensity-distribution (SID) score was used to assess the immunomarkers reactivity. The association between significant candidate immunohistochemical predictor variables regarding clinical behavior was analyzed individually and adjusted for confounding using a binary logistic regression model. RESULTS: While univariate analysis revealed a positive association of NF-ĸB SID score, NF-ĸB nuclear expression, IĸBα SID score, and NF-ĸB to inhibitors average ratio with the aggressive status of GCLs, after bivariate logistic regression analysis, only NF-ĸB nuclear expression, IĸBα SID score, and NF-ĸB to inhibitors average ratio remained as robust predictors of aggressiveness. Confounding and interaction effects regarding clinicopathological candidate predictor variables were also noted. CONCLUSION: It looks that clinical behavior of GCLs of the jaws may be strong/independently linked to the increased nuclear expression of NF-ĸB, higher NF-ĸB to inhibitors average ratio, and decreased IĸBα SID score. Notwithstanding, there are simultaneously synergistic and opposing interactive effects with respect to age stratum, growth rate, multinucleated giant cells count, and mononuclear stromal cells density in the susceptible host that may increase the tissue destruction observed in aggressive GCLs.
