ABSTRACT

A glycoluril-based molecular clip incorporating two tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) sidewalls has been synthesized using a straightforward Diels-Alder synthetic route and its ability to self-assemble with fullerene C60 in a 2 : 1 stoichiometry has been demonstrated in solution.

ABSTRACT

The synthesis of heterocyclic spirobifluorene (SBF) analogs generally requires long and complicated synthetic pathways. Despite this synthetic effort, such structural modification allows the (opto)electronic properties of this remarkable three-dimensional node to be tuned especially for molecular electronic applications. For this reason, the development of a simple, robust, and efficient synthetic methodology to introduce various heterocycles in place of classical phenyl rings in the spirofluorene motif is highly and timely desirable. In this context, we describe herein our efforts to develop a straightforward and efficient synthesis leading to replacement of 2 phenyl rings by various heterocycles in spiro compounds from 2,2'-dibromobenzophenone. As the same procedure to form fully heterocyclic compounds failed, an original theoretical approach based mainly on the uncommon Fukui dual function was developed in order to determine clearly the limitation of this strategy and provide an efficient predictive tool. Indeed, such calculation allows prediction of the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the synthesis of spiro derivatives using a double aromatic electrophilic substitution. If this procedure reproduces well our experimental results focused on (heterocyclic) SBF compounds, it can be certainly adapted and generalized to other intramolecular substitutions.

ABSTRACT

Two M12 L6 redox-active self-assembled cages constructed from an electron-rich ligand based on the extended tetrathiafulvalene framework (exTTF) and metal complexes with a linear geometry (PdII and AgI ) are depicted. Remarkably, based on a combination of specific structural and electronic features, the polycationic self-assembled AgI coordination cage undergoes a supramolecular transformation upon oxidation into a three-dimensional coordination polymer, that is characterized by X-ray crystallography. This redox-controlled change of the molecular organization results from the drastic conformational modifications accompanying oxidation of the exTTF moiety.

ABSTRACT

An organogelator based on the Disperse Red nonlinear optical chromophore was synthesized according to a simple and efficient three-step procedure. The supramolecular gel organization leads to xerogels which display a spontaneous second harmonic generation (SHG) response without any need for preprocessing, and this SHG activity appears to be stable over several months. These findings, based on an intrinsic structural approach, are supported by favorable intermolecular supramolecular interactions, which promote a locally non-centrosymmetric NLO-active organization. This is in sharp contrast with most materials designed for SHG purposes, which generally require the use of expensive or heavy-to-handle external techniques for managing the dipoles' alignment.

ABSTRACT

We have previously shown that azopolymer thin films exposed to coherent light that has travelled through a turbulent medium produces a surface relief grating containing information about the intensity of the turbulence; for instance, a relation between the refractive index structure constant C(n)2 as a function of the surface parameters was obtained. In this work, we show that these films capture much more information about the turbulence dynamics. Multifractal detrended fluctuation and fractal dimension analysis from images of the surface roughness produced by the light on the azopolymer reveals scaling properties related to those of the optical turbulence.

ABSTRACT

We report a technique to encode grayscale digital images in thin films composed of copolymers containing coumarins. A nonlinear microscopy setup was implemented and two nonlinear optical processes were used to store and read information. A third-order process (two-photon absorption) was used to photoinduce a controlled dimer-to-monomer ratio within a defined tiny volume in the material, which corresponds to each recorded bit of data. Moreover, a second-order process (second-harmonic generation) was used to read the stored information, which has been found to be highly dependent upon the monomer-to-dimer ratio.

ABSTRACT

A simple method to measure the influence on the laser beam propagation by a turbid medium is proposed. This measurement is based on the inscription of a surface relief grating (SRG) on an azopolymer thin film. The grating obtained with a single laser beam after propagation into a turbulent medium is perturbed and directly analyzed by a CCD camera through its diffraction pattern. Later, by scanning the surface pattern with an atomic force microscope, the inscribed SRG is analyzed with the Radon transform. This method has the advantage of using a single beam to remotely inscribe a grating detecting perturbations during the beam path. A method to evaluate the refractive index constant structure is developed.
