ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: ADHD is the most common childhood neurodevelopmental disorder. The symptomatology makes the management of ADHD particularly demanding in school, so teachers' training programs have been widely implemented. Nevertheless, these interventions could lead teachers to concentrate on the dysfunctional elements of these students, exposing them to the risk of stigmatisation. Conceptualising stigma and inclusion as narrative processes, the present study observed how teacher ADHD training texts, endorsed by the Italian government, impact on the inclusion process of students. METHODS: The research analysed a corpus of N = 31,261 text occurrences and focused on three areas: (1) ADHD as a clinical condition; (2) the impact of ADHD characteristics in the scholastic setting; (3) interventions to manage ADHD criticalities in school settings. To observe the interactive processes fostered by the narratives under scrutiny, we used Dialogic Science and MADIT methodology, since they allow us to measure the language use modalities through an index: the Dialogical Weight (dW). The value of dW ranges between 0.1 (min) and 0.9 (max) and is linked to the potential outcomes of inclusion for students with ADHD. A low dW accounts for narratives entrenched in personal beliefs presented as absolute truths, undermining inclusion of students with ADHD. In contrast, high dW signals language interaction relying on sharable elements, able to foster social unity and diminish stigma. RESULTS: The results yielded a critical discursive configuration, both in general and for the three distinct areas. We measured an overall Dialogical Weight of 0.4dW and, for the three areas (1) = 0.3dW; (2) = 0.3dW; (3) = 0.4dW. The analysed text does not maximise the triggering of inclusive interactions, as they rely on individual references and present one's narrative as the sole plausible perspective: reinforcing already existing positions and exposing to the risk of stereotyping of the pupils. CONCLUSIONS: The study highlighted how the ADHD training materials analysed, focusing on a purely informational and clinical approach, lose in effectiveness with respect to generating inclusive school settings. Finally, to promote the inclusion of these pupils, elements are offered for outlining an approach based on fostering active participation by all roles involved.

BACKGROUND: Mast cells have been implicated in the pathology of various urinary bladder disorders. However, the distribution of mast cells throughout urinary bladder tissue remains uncertain despite mast cell prevalence being relatively well-defined. Using a mouse tissue model, this study aims to characterise the prevalence and distribution of mast cells throughout the urinary bladder. METHODS: Bladder tissues were collected from six C57BL/6J female mice. Mast cell prevalence was quantified by flow cytometry, based on the expression of the following characteristic markers: CD45, CD117 and FcɛRIα. The toluidine blue stain assessed mast cell distribution, size, and proximity to vasculature. A repeated measures one-way ANOVA was used to evaluate the density of mast cells between the discrete layers of the urinary bladder, and an ordinary one-way ANOVA was used to assess potential differences between mast cell size across the urinary bladder wall. RESULTS: It was determined that mast cells compose less than 4% of all live leukocytes in the urinary bladder. They were also found to be more prominent in the lamina propria and detrusor muscle layers, compared to the urothelium and adventitia. In addition, 20.89% of mast cells were located near vasculature, which may be an important factor in consideration of their function and potential to contribute to various bladder pathologies, such as cystitis or overactive bladder. CONCLUSION: These findings provide a baseline understanding of mast cell prevalence and distribution throughout the urinary bladder.

ABSTRACT

Radiation-induced cystitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the urinary bladder, which can develop as a side effect of abdominopelvic radiotherapy, specifically external-beam radiation therapy or myeloablative radiotherapy. A possible involvement of mast cells in the pathophysiology of radiation-induced cystitis has been indicated in cases of external-beam radiation therapy; however, there is no evidence that these findings apply to the myeloablative aetiology. As such, this study investigated potential changes to urinary bladder mast cell prevalence when exposed to myeloablative radiation. Lethally irradiated C57BL/6J mice that received donor rescue bone marrow cells exhibited an increased mast cell frequency amongst host leukocytes 1 week following irradiation. By 4 weeks, no significant difference in either frequency or cell density was observed. However mast cell diameter was smaller, and a significant increase in mast cell number in the adventitia was observed. This study highlights that mast cells constitute a significant portion of the remaining host leukocyte population following radiation exposure, with changes to mast cell distribution and decreased cell diameter four weeks following radiation-induced injury.

OBJECTIVE: There are well-described impacts of biological rhythms on human physiology. With the increasing push for routine blood tests for preventative medical care and clinical and physiological research, optimizing effectiveness is paramount. This study aimed to determine whether it is feasible to assess diurnal variations of peripheral lymphocyte prevalence using finger prick blood in a small sample size. METHODS: Using polychromatic flow cytometry, the prevalence of lymphocytes was assessed using 25 µL fingertip blood samples at 8 AM and 5 PM from 8 participants. RESULTS: TH cells and B cells showed significantly higher percentages in the 5 PM samples, whereas NK cells demonstrated a significantly higher morning percentage. T cells, leukocytes, and cytotoxic T cells showed no significant changes. CONCLUSION: The detection of diurnal variations demonstrates that small blood volumes can be used to detect lymphocyte variations. The lower blood volume required provides a new testing method for clinical and research settings.

ABSTRACT

Ageing is associated with deteriorating urinary bladder function and an increasing prevalence of disorders such as underactive bladder. There are suggestions that G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) second messenger pathways are altered during ageing, rather than the receptor proteins themselves. The aim of this study was to identify age-related variations in GPCR activation systems in urinary bladder smooth muscle (detrusor). Isolated porcine detrusor strips were mounted in organ baths and contractile responses induced by receptor agonists were assessed and compared between juvenile (6 months) and adult (2 years) animals. The effects of drugs disrupting intracellular calcium signalling were also studied. Adult tissue was far more sensitive to stimulation by 5-hydroxytryptamine (42% greater increase than juvenile), prostaglandin-E2 (26% greater increase), and angiotensin-II (39% greater increase), however less sensitive to histamine. Although nifedipine and Y-27632 impacted the contraction to all agonists, there were no significant differences between juvenile and adult detrusor. Impairment of IP3-mediated calcium release by 2-aminoethyl diphenylborinate had no effect on any contractile activity, except for neurokinin-A which inhibited both juvenile and adult detrusor, and prostaglandin-E2 which inhibited juvenile. Carbachol, histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and angiotensin-II were not affected by the application of 2-aminoethyl diphenylborinate. In conclusion, the contractile responses to all the GPCR agonists involved extracellular calcium influx and calcium sensitisation, but for prostaglandin-E2 the dependence on calcium from intracellular sources was greater in the younger animals.

ABSTRACT

Literature about global emergencies and their impact on people's health underlines the need to improve the social cohesion of human community and the availability of tools to support people and foster community interactions. This paper illustrates research aimed at describing and measuring human interactions in the Veneto community and its changing during the COVID-19 pandemic. 50,000 text occurrences from social media and newspapers about these topics were analyzed between December 2021 and January 2022. People present themselves as members of different teams, pursuing conflicting aims, and attributing the decision-making responsibility of emergencies management exclusively to governments, without considering themselves as active parts of the community. This delegation process on citizens' behalf can affect their health: by taking minor responsibility in handling the repercussions of these events on the community and by arguing over the most effective way to deal with them, they risk freezing and waiting for action by third parties, thus leaving mutual interactions and the promotion of their own health at a standstill. Local institutions can use these data to shape prevention policies to manage the community's emergencies and use them as opportunities to promote public health.

ABSTRACT

There is a growing trend towards using virtual models within medical programs. In some disciplines, the use of human samples or cadavers is increasingly being replaced by technology-enhanced modes of delivery. Although this transition can occur with some success, the impact of virtual representations to replace depictions of disease states from dissected samples displayed in acrylic pathological specimen jars has never been investigated. This study assessed medical student perceptions of replacing teaching through physical specimens (i.e. specimen jars or real tissue) with virtual models across cardiovascular, neural, musculoskeletal, haematology, endocrine and immunological pathology curricula. Seventy-four year 2 (n = 31) and year 5 (n = 43) medical students participated in the study. After being provided with a demonstration of a potential tablet-based lesson on lung pathology using augmented reality, participants completed a Likert-scale survey and provided written feedback. Questions requested thoughts on the usefulness of the 3D-virtual model compared to physical specimens and whether current teaching in pathology could be replaced by technology-enhanced practices. Most students (58.15%) disagreed on the replacement of physical specimens with virtual models. Furthermore, over half the students (55.4%) indicated that the replacement of physical specimens with augmented reality models would not be beneficial for pathology learning. Nearly two-thirds of students believed that the absence of physical specimens would negatively impact their knowledge. Nonetheless, many students would appreciate the opportunity to revise pathology away from the labs with virtual options. As such, an overwhelming number of students (89.2%) would prefer having both physical specimens and virtual models for learning. This study identifies that technology-enhanced learning may be a suitable supplement alongside traditional hands-on teaching but should not replace the use of pathological specimens within a medical curriculum.

ABSTRACT

Ninety-five percent of Westerners do not consume the recommended daily vegetable intake, exacerbating the incidence of obesity, malnutrition, and nutritional deficiencies such as fiber. This article reviews the literature from PubMed, ERIC, and Web of Science, as well as Internet sites and government resources, to identify what should be considered important inclusions relating to dietary vegetable (including legumes and pulses) intake content in university physiology subjects. The primary aim is to advance the competency relating to good nutrition knowledge for future health professionals to enable them to guide and counsel patients and clients toward better health. A review of the literature provides scant nutritional content relating to vegetable intake, particularly across physiology subjects and health professional programs in general. A review of country dietary guidelines yielded discrepancies and ambiguity around recommended daily vegetable intake, including what constitutes essential vegetables. Educators responsible for embedding nutritional information in the curriculum would therefore be challenged to find reliable, evidence-based resources. Adding quality curriculum content on the importance of vegetable intake also promotes some of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), thereby contributing to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). This article offers recommendations on how to embed content relating to the importance of dietary vegetables for good health and guidance for educators of health professions programs wanting to improve their curriculum content relating to adequate nutrition.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Is nutritional literacy an important concept in physiology? This article identifies a paucity of content and addresses the need for vegetable intake education.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Radiotherapy is a prominent therapy for many malignant and non-malignant disorders, though it can cause side effects such as radiation-induced cystitis. Current research has highlighted a role for mast cells and macrophages in the prognosis of such radiation-induced toxicities. However, the prognostic value of these immune cells in the pathophysiology of radiation-induced cystitis is not clear. As such, a systematic review was conducted to assess myeloid-lineage immune cells for their prognostic value in radiation-induced cystitis to address this gap in literature. METHODS: The protocol was registered in PROSPERO, and searches were performed in PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases for pre-clinical rodent studies on radiation-induced cystitis. RESULTS: After de-duplication, 153 articles were screened for relevancy by title and abstract. Title and abstract screening deemed 64 studies irrelevant. The remaining 85 studies were full-text screened, yielding seven unique articles for data extraction. Most included studies had an unclear risk of bias. The findings of this systematic review suggest that the prognostic value of myeloid-lineage immune cells in radiation-induced cystitis is still unclear, indicating a need for further research in this field. CONCLUSION: Although the studies reviewed provide some insight into the role of these immune cells in disease pathology, the limited number of studies and unclear risk of bias further highlights a need for additional, high-quality research in this area. In summary, this systematic review highlights a need to understand the involvement of immune cells in radiation-induced cystitis pathophysiology and lay the groundwork for further research in this area. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Health professionals are being called on to be advocates for the planet to ensure health and well-being for current and future generations. Clean air, flourishing ecosystems, a stable climate, and nutritious food are required for health and well-being. Considering the deteriorating state of our natural environment, today's health professionals need to be advocates for a healthy planet. This places an onus on tertiary institutions to prepare graduates to 'take action' for the planet and all of its inhabitants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This report outlines the development of a team-based Planetary Health Assignment that equips learners to use at least two of the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It was identified at the design stage that an effective planetary health educational intervention should not only encourage learners to take action, but also embed creativity, with the best products available for public scrutiny. Several pedagogical principles were used in the design (authentic assessment, learner-centredness, creativity, scholarship). RESULTS: During the first five years of implementation, minor refinements were made based on learner and academic feedback. The assignment criteria sheet was improved to the point that it encouraged thoughtful and reflective submissions, and tasked learners to provide achievable and realistic solutions to pressing environmental issues. The marking rubric was also developed to provide quality feedback and insights for students. CONCLUSIONS: The design of this assessment, framed by the SDGs, allows learners flexibility in their choices while still meeting the required learning outcomes. With the assignment underpinned by a robust design, it provides students with both knowledge and experiences about how they might take action on the SDGs and become advocates for a healthy planet.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Although commonly considered postgraduate-level study, universities are increasingly providing options for direct undergraduate entry into health professional programs. This presents a need to inform high school students about the wide variety of careers available in the medical and allied health professions. METHODS: To accomplish this, the developed "Health Simulation Experience" uses a case-based learning approach to introduce high school students to careers in health through the management and care of simulated patients. Participants worked through 3 simulated scenarios during the 1-day event and reported their perceptions on written feedback forms at the conclusion. A qualitative research approach was used to identify whether the simulation-based structure was an appropriate approach to assist with enhancing their understanding of career options within the primary and allied healthcare systems. RESULTS: Of the 528 student attendees who engaged with the program between 2018-2022, 333 provided ratings of their experience (94% overall satisfaction) and written feedback. From qualitative analysis of written comments, the following 3 key themes emerged: the approach provided insights into health professions careers; they enjoyed the authentic and immersive approach to learning; and the event developed an understanding of commonly performed clinical skills. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the use of case-based learning with interprofessional hands-on experiences is an effective approach to introduce students to future study options and career pathways in primary and allied health.

ABSTRACT

Importance: Amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) allows the direct assessment of amyloid deposition, one of the main hallmarks of Alzheimer disease. However, this technique is currently not widely reimbursed because of the lack of appropriately designed studies demonstrating its clinical effect. Objective: To assess the clinical effect of amyloid PET in memory clinic patients. Design, Setting, and Participants: The AMYPAD-DPMS is a prospective randomized clinical trial in 8 European memory clinics. Participants were allocated (using a minimization method) to 3 study groups based on the performance of amyloid PET: arm 1, early in the diagnostic workup (within 1 month); arm 2, late in the diagnostic workup (after a mean [SD] 8 [2] months); or arm 3, if and when the managing physician chose. Participants were patients with subjective cognitive decline plus (SCD+; SCD plus clinical features increasing the likelihood of preclinical Alzheimer disease), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), or dementia; they were assessed at baseline and after 3 months. Recruitment took place between April 16, 2018, and October 30, 2020. Data analysis was performed from July 2022 to January 2023. Intervention: Amyloid PET. Main Outcome and Measure: The main outcome was the difference between arm 1 and arm 2 in the proportion of participants receiving an etiological diagnosis with a very high confidence (ie, ≥90% on a 50%-100% visual numeric scale) after 3 months. Results: A total of 844 participants were screened, and 840 were enrolled (291 in arm 1, 271 in arm 2, 278 in arm 3). Baseline and 3-month visit data were available for 272 participants in arm 1 and 260 in arm 2 (median [IQR] age: 71 [65-77] and 71 [65-77] years; 150/272 male [55%] and 135/260 male [52%]; 122/272 female [45%] and 125/260 female [48%]; median [IQR] education: 12 [10-15] and 13 [10-16] years, respectively). After 3 months, 109 of 272 participants (40%) in arm 1 had a diagnosis with very high confidence vs 30 of 260 (11%) in arm 2 (P < .001). This was consistent across cognitive stages (SCD+: 25/84 [30%] vs 5/78 [6%]; P < .001; MCI: 45/108 [42%] vs 9/102 [9%]; P < .001; dementia: 39/80 [49%] vs 16/80 [20%]; P < .001). Conclusion and Relevance: In this study, early amyloid PET allowed memory clinic patients to receive an etiological diagnosis with very high confidence after only 3 months compared with patients who had not undergone amyloid PET. These findings support the implementation of amyloid PET early in the diagnostic workup of memory clinic patients. Trial Registration: EudraCT Number: 2017-002527-21.

ABSTRACT

Consensus was reached on seven core concepts of physiology using the Delphi method, including "integration," outlined by the descriptor "cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems interact to create and sustain life." This core concept was unpacked by a team of 3 Australian physiology educators into hierarchical levels, identifying 5 themes and 10 subthemes, up to 1 level deep. The unpacked core concept was then circulated among 23 experienced physiology educators for comments and to rate both level of importance and level of difficulty for each theme and subtheme. Data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA to compare between and within themes. The main theme (theme 1: the body is organized within a hierarchy of structures, from atoms to molecules, cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems) was almost universally rated as Essential. Interestingly, the main theme was also rated between Slightly Difficult to Not Difficult, which was significantly different from all other subthemes. There were two separate subsets of themes in relation to importance, with three themes rating between Essential and Important and the two other themes rating as Important. Two subsets in the difficulty of the main themes were also identified. While many core concepts can be taught concurrently, Integration requires the application of prior knowledge, with the expectation that learners should be able to apply concepts from "cell-cell communication," "homeostasis," and "structure and function," before understanding the overall Integration core concept. As such, themes from the Integration core concept should be taught within the endmost semesters of a Physiology program.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This article proposes the inclusion of a core concept regarding "integration" into physiology-based curricula, with the descriptor "cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems interact to create and sustain life." This concept expands prior knowledge and applies physiological understanding to real-world scenarios and introduces contexts such as medications, diseases, and aging to the student learning experience. To comprehend the topics within the Integration core concept, students will need to apply learned material from earlier semesters.

OBJECTIVES: Antimuscarinic medications are the first-line treatments for overactive bladder, the most common form of bladder dysfunction. Their primary action is thought to block detrusor muscarinic receptors. It is unclear, however, if these therapeutics have actions on other tissues within the lower urinary tract. This study assessed whether clinical antimuscarinics have a functional impact on urothelium with lamina propria (U&LP) tissue. METHODS: Strips of porcine detrusor and U&LP were mounted in carbogen-gassed Krebs-bicarbonate solution at 37°C. The tissues were paired with carbachol-response curves performed in the absence or presence of each antimuscarinic. pEC50 values for each curve were analyzed and estimated affinities calculated. RESULTS: Both detrusor and U&LP tissues contracted with muscarinic receptor stimulation, which was inhibited by commonly used antimuscarinics. In detrusor samples (p < 0.001 for all), right parallel shifts from the control were observed in response to oxybutynin (1 µM), solifenacin (1 µM), tolterodine (1 µM), darifenacin (100 nM), trospium (100 nM) and fesoterodine (100 nM). This shift was consistent in U&LP samples, with no significant differences between the two layers. CONCLUSIONS: The data suggests that clinical antimuscarinics are as effective at inhibiting tonic contractions of the U&LP as they are on detrusor, presenting the U&LP as an alternate target of these medications in the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms.

ABSTRACT

A set of core concepts ("big ideas") integral to the discipline of physiology are important for students to understand and demonstrate their capacity to apply. We found poor alignment of learning outcomes in programs with physiology majors (or equivalent) from 17 Australian universities and the 15 core concepts developed by a team in the United States. The objective of this project was to reach Australia-wide consensus on a set of core concepts for physiology, which can be embedded in curricula across Australian universities. A four-phase Delphi method was employed, starting with the assembling of a Task Force of physiology educators with extensive teaching and curriculum development expertise from 25 Australian universities. After two online meetings and a survey, the Task Force reached agreement on seven core concepts of physiology and their descriptors, which were then sent out to the physiology educator community across Australia for agreement. The seven core concepts and their associated descriptions were endorsed through this process (n = 138). In addition, embedding the core concepts across the curriculum was supported by both Task Force members (85.7%) and educators (82.1%). The seven adopted core concepts of human physiology were Cell Membrane, Cell-Cell Communication, Movement of Substances, Structure and Function, Homeostasis, Integration, and Physiological Adaptation. The core concepts were subsequently unpacked into themes and subthemes. If adopted, these core concepts will result in consistency across curricula in undergraduate physiology programs and allow for future benchmarking.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This is the first time Australia-wide agreement has been reached on the core concepts of physiology with the Delphi method. Embedding of the core concepts will result in consistency in physiology curricula, improvements to teaching and learning, and benchmarking across Australian universities.

ABSTRACT

Educational institutions are increasingly investing into digital delivery, acquiring new devices, and employing novel software and services. The rising costs associated with maintenance, in combination with increasing redundancy of older technologies, presents multiple challenges. While lesson content itself may not have changed, the educational landscape constantly evolves, where tertiary institutions are incorporating new modes of content delivery, hybrid-style learning, and interactive technologies. Investments into digital expansions must be taken with caution, particularly prior to the procurement of technology, with a need for the proposed interventions' scalability, sustainability, and serviceability to be considered. This article presents the Triple-S framework for educators, administrators, and educational institutions, and outlines examples of its application within curricula. The paper synthesises research evidence to provide the foundation underlying the key principles of the Triple-S framework, presenting a useful model to use when evaluating digital interventions. Utilising the framework for decisions regarding the acquisition of educational technology, devices, software, applications, and online resources can assist in the assurance of viable and  appropriate investments.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: As a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, how to effectively manage and prevent stroke is a key consideration for health care systems. Throughout the world stroke management recommendations include education; however, not all patients receive this intervention. Advances in technology have provided health professionals with a range of innovative, effective, and modern tools that may be useful in delivering stroke education. This study aimed to systematically review the current evidence for the use of interactive technology in stroke patient education, and whether this was effective for increasing patients' stroke knowledge and behaviours that lower stroke risk. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The protocol was registered with PROSPERO (#225223) and a literature search undertaken in Embase (including MEDLINE and PubMed), PsycInfo and CINAHL from inception until August 2022. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used to assess the methodological quality of the included articles. RESULTS: From an initial yield of 760 articles, 10 articles met the study inclusion criteria. The articles explored a range of interactive technologies, with none of them includes articles using the same technology. All of the articles reported at least one positive effect from the technology. Two articles reported on stroke incidence post-intervention. The methodological quality of the articles varied, but was largely medium to high. CONCLUSION: The paucity of evidence highlights a need for future studies to provide insights into the benefits of quality interactive technology-based stroke education and to identify options for optimal delivery modes in stroke education.


The explosion and rapid growth of technology in all aspects of everyday life means that people with stroke are more connected to technology than ever before.There is limited research into the effects of interactive technology in stroke education, in particular whether the education reduces the risks of subsequent strokes or improves patient understanding of stroke.There is an urgent need for further research to explore whether one technology or combination of technologies is optimal in enhancing stroke education.

ABSTRACT

Importance: Individuals who are amyloid-positive with subjective cognitive decline and clinical features increasing the likelihood of preclinical Alzheimer disease (SCD+) are at higher risk of developing dementia. Some individuals with SCD+ undergo amyloid-positron emission tomography (PET) as part of research studies and frequently wish to know their amyloid status; however, the disclosure of a positive amyloid-PET result might have psychological risks. Objective: To assess the psychological outcomes of the amyloid-PET result disclosure in individuals with SCD+ and explore which variables are associated with a safer disclosure in individuals who are amyloid positive. Design, Setting, and Participants: This prospective, multicenter study was conducted as part of The Amyloid Imaging to Prevent Alzheimer Disease Diagnostic and Patient Management Study (AMYPAD-DPMS) (recruitment period: from April 2018 to October 2020). The setting was 5 European memory clinics, and participants included patients with SCD+ who underwent amyloid-PET. Statistical analysis was performed from July to October 2022. Exposures: Disclosure of amyloid-PET result. Main Outcomes and Measures: Psychological outcomes were defined as (1) disclosure related distress, assessed using the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R; scores of at least 33 indicate probable presence of posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD]); and (2) anxiety and depression, assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS; scores of at least 15 indicate probable presence of severe mood disorder symptoms). Results: After disclosure, 27 patients with amyloid-positive SCD+ (median [IQR] age, 70 [66-74] years; gender: 14 men [52%]; median [IQR] education: 15 [13 to 17] years, median [IQR] Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE] score, 29 [28 to 30]) had higher median (IQR) IES-R total score (10 [2 to 14] vs 0 [0 to 2]; P < .001), IES-R avoidance (0.00 [0.00 to 0.69] vs 0.00 [0.00 to 0.00]; P < .001), IES-R intrusions (0.50 [0.13 to 0.75] vs 0.00 [0.00 to 0.25]; P < .001), and IES-R hyperarousal (0.33 [0.00 to 0.67] vs 0.00 [0.00 to 0.00]; P < .001) scores than the 78 patients who were amyloid-negative (median [IQR], age, 67 [64 to 74] years, 45 men [58%], median [IQR] education: 15 [12 to 17] years, median [IQR] MMSE score: 29 [28 to 30]). There were no observed differences between amyloid-positive and amyloid-negative patients in the median (IQR) HADS Anxiety (-1.0 [-3.0 to 1.8] vs -2.0 [-4.8 to 1.0]; P = .06) and Depression (-1.0 [-2.0 to 0.0] vs -1.0 [-3.0 to 0.0]; P = .46) deltas (score after disclosure - scores at baseline). In patients with amyloid-positive SCD+, despite the small sample size, higher education was associated with lower disclosure-related distress (ρ = -0.43; P = .02) whereas the presence of study partner was associated with higher disclosure-related distress (W = 7.5; P = .03). No participants with amyloid-positive SCD+ showed probable presence of PTSD or severe anxiety or depression symptoms at follow-up. Conclusions and Relevance: The disclosure of a positive amyloid-PET result to patients with SCD+ was associated with a bigger psychological change, yet such change did not reach the threshold for clinical concern.
