ABSTRACT

Osteoblastoma is a solitary benign bone-forming neoplasm, which comprises 1% of all primary bone tumors. Multifocal benign osteoblastoma of the jaws is very rare. Osteoblastoma must be differentiated from other similar bone-forming lesions such as osteoid osteoma and osteosarcoma for correct diagnosis and proper treatment planning. Therefore, precise examination of the patient and correlation with radiographic and histological features are essential for the best treatment and prognosis. This study reports a rare case of multifocal osteoblastoma in a 30-year-old female, involving the mandible and the maxilla, which was treated by surgical excision, iliac bone graft reconstruction, and implantation. Complete surgical excision is necessary to treat osteoblastoma with a good prognosis. The patient was followed-up for four years postoperatively, and there were no signs of recurrence in the panoramic view or the clinical examination.

ABSTRACT

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy is a rare, rapidly growing, painless, pigmented neoplasm with neural crest derivation. It usually occurs during the first year of life and there is a prominent predilection for the maxilla. The purpose of the present report is to describe additional case of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy of maxilla in a 6-month-old infant male. The treatment included surgical excision with safe margins. No attempt was made for immediate grafting of the surgery site due to high proliferation rate of tissues and self-renewal during infancy. The facial growth was normal and the surgical cleft was tightly closed. Due to the rarity of tumor, essential knowledge on characteristics of this lesion would contribute to a proper diagnosis and benefit treatment planning.

ABSTRACT

Sialadenoma papilliferum (SP) is a rare benign salivary gland tumor with unclear cell origin. This report presents a new case of SP of the hard palate occurring in a 50-year-old female. The lesion was completely excised, and the microscopic features were consistent with SP. The knowledge of this rare entity contributes to proper diagnosis and prevents unnecessary radical surgery and treatment.

ABSTRACT

Solitary fibrous tumor has a wide spectrum of histopathologic features and many tumors show similar microscopic features. This similarity poses diagnostic challenges to the pathologists and immunohistochemical analysis is required in many cases. Moreover, it is a rare entity in orofacial region which consequently would make its diagnosis more challenging in oral cavity. The knowledge of various microscopic patterns of this tumor contributes to a proper diagnosis and prevents unnecessary treatment. This study reports a case of solitary fibrous tumor in the retromolar pad area and discusses its various histological features and differential diagnoses.

ABSTRACT

Ameloblastic fibrosarcoma is a mixed odontogenic tumor that can originate de novo or from a transformed ameloblastic fibroma. This report describes the case of a 34-year-old woman with a recurrent, rapidly growing, debilitating lesion. This lesion appeared as a large painful mandibular swelling that filled the oral cavity and extended to the infratemporal fossa. The lesion had been previously misdiagnosed as ameloblastoma. Twenty months after final surgery and postoperative chemotherapy, lung metastases were diagnosed after she reported respiratory signs and symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Granulocytic Sarcoma (GS), an unusual extramedullary tumor, is composed of immature granulocytic precursor cells. The intraoral occurrence of this tumor is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of GS with palatal swelling, gingival lesions in maxilla and mandible and aleukemic presentation in a 45- year- old male.

ABSTRACT

Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) or Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome is a rare X-linked dominant genodermatosis related to the NF kappa B essential modulator (NEMO) gene with approximately 800 cases reported worldwide. It usually occurs in females characterized by cutaneous, skeletal, neurological, ocular and dental abnormalities as well as an increased risk of childhood malignancies. Herein, we report a case of IP in a 14-year-old girl emphasizing early diagnosis and adding to the current literature on the subject.

ABSTRACT

Maffucci's syndrome is a rare congenital mesodermal dysplasia combined with dyschondroplasia and hemangiomatosis. About 150 cases have been reported till now. Maffucci's syndrome is often combined with other neoplasms. Herein, we report a patient with Maffucci's syndrome and hemangiomas on the dorsum of the tongue, which is rare in this syndrome.

ABSTRACT

Here, we report a family with gigantiform cementomas, bone fractures, and autosomal dominant inheritance. Lesions are composed of benign, lobulated, calcified masses resembling cementum. Identification of a COL1A2 mutation in one patient was a polymorphism of no pathological significance. The subject of gigantiform cementomas and the associated bone disorder is both confusing and complex. Reported familial instances indicate genetic heterogeneity with (1) osteopenia and bone fractures, (2) one form of osteogenesis imperfecta, and (3) a polyostotic diaphyseal bone disorder.

ABSTRACT

Extramedullary plasmacytoma is defined as neoplastic proliferation of plasma cells in soft tissue. It accounts for up to 3% of all plasma cell tumors. Approximately, 90% of extramedullary plasmacytomas are found in the head and neck region commonly affecting the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, tonsillar fossa, and oral cavity. Radiotherapy is the common modality of treatment with or without adjuvant chemotherapy. We report a case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the gingiva.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical use of amnion as a biodegradable graft material for vestibuloplasty. STUDY DESIGN: Seven subjects who had been referred for preprosthetic surgery underwent mandibular vestibuloplasty using Clark's technique and amnion as graft material. Fresh amniotic membrane was placed in the area and an acrylic splint was used with soft liner and 0.4-mm wires to cover the surgical site. The area was reexamined after 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months. RESULTS: A white necrotic soft tissue layer could be seen with underlying hyperemic tissue and an average reduction of 1 to 3 mm in the depth of the labial vestibule after a week. By the end of the second week, the necrotic layer had disappeared, leaving slightly hyperemic mucosal tissue under. By the third week, the graft area could be noticed but the amnion had completely degenerated and disappeared. After 4 weeks, the subjects could be referred for their prosthodontic treatment. The reduction in the depth of the buccal vestibule ranged from 17% to 40% after 6 months' follow-up. CONCLUSION: Amnion might be used as a potential graft material for vestibuloplasty.
