ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To describe a novel transconjunctival technique for excision of well-defined masses of the orbital lobe of the lacrimal gland. METHODS: Case series of three patients undergoing excision of a well-defined mass of the orbital lobe of lacrimal gland using a swinging upper eyelid flap. This technique entails a supratarsal conjunctival incision combined with lateral canthotomy and superior cantholysis. RESULTS: Complete removal of the mass without visible scars was achieved in all cases. There were no complications related to this approach. CONCLUSION: The swinging upper eyelid approach produces a wide exposure of the superolateral orbit. It allows safe removal of large lacrimal gland masses without the need for bone removal, while affording acceptable cosmesis.

BACKGROUND: Depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) functions as a contraceptive method by inhibiting the secretion of gonadotropins, which prevents follicular maturation and ovulation, as well as thinning of the endometrium leading to unscheduled vaginal bleeding and subsequent discontinuation of DMPA. Our study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of clomiphene citrate (CC) in stopping bleeding among DMPA users. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We randomly assigned 200 DMPA users using a computer-generated random numbers table in a 1:1 ratio to one of two groups; the study group, which received CC at a dose of 50 mg twice daily for five days (n = 100), and the control group, which received a placebo for five days (n = 100). Our primary outcome measure was the onset and duration of bleeding cessation. Secondary outcomes included endometrial thickness, recurrence of vaginal bleeding, and any reported side effects associated with CC use. RESULTS: Clomiphene citrate significantly resulted in early cessation of vaginal bleeding in 83 % of the patients, which continued for three months of follow-up. In addition, the recurrence of vaginal bleeding was significantly reduced in the CC group compared to the control group (11 % vs. 67 %; p < 0.001). Endometrial thickness was significantly greater in the CC group than in the control group (p < 0.001). Breast tenderness was more frequently reported in the study group, with no difference in dyspareunia between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Clomiphene citrate is effective in controlling bleeding among DMPA users. Further studies are encouraged to confirm our findings.

ABSTRACT

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is defined as a cluster of glucose intolerance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and central obesity with insulin resistance. The role of gut microbiota in metabolic disorders is increasingly considered. To investigate the effects of probiotic supplements and hypocaloric high fiber regimen on MetS in obese Egyptian women. A longitudinal follow-up intervention study included 58 obese Egyptian women, with a mean age of 41.62 ± 10.70 years. They were grouped according to the criteria of MetS into 2 groups; 23 obese women with MetS and 35 ones without MetS. They followed a hypocaloric high fiber regimen weight loss program, light physical exercise, and received a probiotic supplement daily for 3 months. For each participating woman, blood pressure, anthropometric measurements, basal metabolic rate (BMR), dietary recalls, laboratory investigations, and microbiota analysis were acquired before and after 3 months of follow-up. After intervention by the probiotic and hypocaloric high fiber regimen and light exercise, reduction ranged from numerical to significant difference in the anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, and BMR was reported. All the biochemical parameters characterized by MetS decreased significantly at p ≤ 0.05-0.01. Before the intervention, results revealed abundant of Bacteroidetes bacteria over Firmicutes with a low Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio. After the intervention, Log Lactobacillus, Log Bifidobacteria, and Log Bacteroidetes increased significantly in both groups, while Log Firmicutes and the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes Ratio revealed a significant decrease. In conclusion, this study's results highlight a positive trend of probiotics supplementation with hypocaloric high-fiber diets in amelioration of the criteria of the Mets in obese Egyptian women.

BACKGROUND: Despite advancements in surgical technique, myocardial shield, and postoperative care, Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) among patients with reduced ejection fraction (EF) remains a surgical challenge due to their greater postoperative morbidity and mortality. This study aims to determine the early outcome of patients with reduced LVEF undergoing CABG and the improvement in the ejection fraction after revascularization. METHODS: A total of 62 patients with impaired Left Ventricular (LV) systolic function (LVEF = 35-40 %) who underwent isolated On-pump CABG at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Assiut University Hospitals and who had met the listed inclusion and exclusion criteria were eligible for the study. Different variables (preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative) were collected, studied, and compared. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 57.81 ± 7.57 years, 66.1 % were male and 33.9 % were female. 44 (71.0%) patients were administered antegrade cardioplegia, whereas 18 (29.0%) patients were administered antegrade plus retrograde cardioplegia. Mean LVEF increased significantly from 37.97 ± 1.38% before surgery to 51.87 ± 3.54% after surgery (P ˂ 0.05). Post-operative low cardiac output syndrome occurred in 37 (59.7 %) of patients, pulmonary complications in 15 (24.2%), neurological complications in 10 (16.1%), sternal wound infection in 9 (14.5%), atrial fibrillation in 5 (8.1%) and acute kidney injury in 5 (8.1 %) of patients. In-hospital mortality was 16.1% (10 patients). CONCLUSION: Based on the findings, CABG in patients with reduced preoperative LVEF improves the postoperative LVEF and NYHA functional class.

ABSTRACT

Background: Having good exposure to the mitral apparatus during mitral valve replacement is a vital decision every cardiac surgeon must take. This study was conducted to compare the simple transseptal approach and the conventional left atrial approach for mitral valve procedures, to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the simple transseptal approach during open heart mitral valve procedures, as the conventional left atrial approach may not provide optimal exposure, especially in unfavorable anatomical and operative situations. Methods: This is a retrospective study. It has been conducted on 140 patients who were diagnosed with heart diseases that required mitral valve replacement. Surgeries were performed in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department. Mitral procedure was done through median sternotomy incision under general anesthesia on a cardiopulmonary bypass machine with cold antegrade cardioplegia. Demographic data, preoperative diagnosis, intraoperative findings, hospital stay, complications, and mortality were documented and revised. Results: One hundred and forty patients were enrolled in this study with a median age of 39 years, and no significant differences as regards the baseline demographic data as age, sex, and body mass index (BMI). A total of 68 patients underwent mitral valve replacement through the simple transseptal approach and 72 patients through the conventional left atrial approach. Both studied groups had insignificant differences as regards bypass time, re-operation rate, postoperative complications, hospital stay, and mortality. Conclusion: The simple transseptal approach through the midpoint of the fossa ovalis could be a safe and even favorable alternative to the traditional left atriotomy approach in certain difficult operative situations during mitral valve replacement surgery.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Immune dysfunction and thrombocytopenia are common features in liver cirrhosis. Platelet transfusion is the most widely used therapeutic approach for thrombocytopenia when indicated. The transfused platelets are prone to lesions during their storage that empower their interaction with the recipient leucocyte. These interactions modulate the host immune response. The impact of platelet transfusion on the immune system in cirrhotic patients is little understood. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of platelet transfusion on neutrophil function in cirrhotic patients. Methods: This prospective cohort study was implemented on 30 cirrhotic patients receiving platelet transfusion and 30 healthy individuals as a control group. EDTA blood samples were collected from cirrhotic patients before and after an elective platelet transfusion. Flowcytometric analysis of neutrophil functions (CD11b expression and PCN formation) was performed. Results: There was a significant increase in expression of CD11b on neutrophils and Frequency of platelet-complexed neutrophils (PCN) in patients with cirrhosis compared with controls. Platelet transfusion increased level of CD11b and the frequency of PCN even more. There was a significant positive correlation between change in PCN Frequency pefore and after transfusion and the change in expression of CDllb among cirrhotic patients. Conclusions: Elective platelet transfusion appears to increase level of PCN in cirrhotic patients, moreover, exacerbate the expression of activation marker CDllb on both neutrophils and PCN. More research and studies are needed to corroborate our preliminary findings.

Background: Researchers are interested in genital wart (GW) studies due to their increased incidence. In a single experimental research, virally infected mouse models showed elevated kisspeptin levels and low interferon levels. Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the serum levels of kisspeptin and interferon (INF)-beta in GW patients. Patients and Methods: Forty patients with GWs and forty healthy participants of comparable age and sex as a control group were included in this case-control study. Serum levels of kisspeptin and IFN-beta were measured using ELISA during the period from December 2021 to April 2022. Results: Kisspeptin was significantly higher among cases than controls, whereas IFN-beta level was lower among cases than controls (P < 0.001). There were no significant relations between kisspeptin and IFN-beta levels and the clinical data for the studied participants, and there was no significant correlation between both (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The reported increased kisspeptin level which was associated with decreased interferon-beta level in patients with GWs might indicate a new insight into viral infection pathogenesis. Further research including all steps in kisspeptin/G protein-coupled receptor 54 pathway is required. Targeted therapy for this pathway may be of value for those patients.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) is the second most frequent cancer in women and the second most common cancer worldwide. Lifestyle factors, like body weight, physical activity and diet, may be accompanying with higher BC risk. AIM: The assessment of macronutrients dietary intake; protein, fat, carbohydrates and their components of amino, fatty acids, and central obesity/adiposity among pre- and postmenopausal Egyptian women with benign and malignant breast tumors. METHODS: The current case control study included 222 women: 85 control, 54 benign and 83 breast cancer patients. Clinical, anthropocentric and biomedical examinations were performed. Dietary history and health attitude were done. RESULTS: The anthropometric parameters including waist circumference (WC) and the body mass index (BMI) of the benign and the women with malignant breast lesions showed the highest values when compared to the control (35.45 ± 15.58 km2 and 101.24 ± 15.01 cm, 31.39 ± 6.77 km2 and 98.85 ± 13.53 cm and 27.51 ± 7.10 km2 and 84.33 ± 13.78 cm). The biochemical parameters revealed high concentration of the total cholesterol (TC) (192.83 ± 41.54 mg/dl), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) (117.88 ± 35.18 mg/dl) and the median insulin level 13.8 (10.2-24.1) µu/ml in the malignant patients with high significant difference compared to the control. The malignant patients had the highest daily caloric intake (795.84 ± 519.95 K calories) proteins (65.39 ± 28.77 g), total fats (69.09 ± 32.15 g) and carbohydrates (196.70 ± 85.35 g), when compared to the control. Data also revealed the high daily consumption of the different types of the fatty acids with high linoleic/linoleinic ratio among the malignant group (14.284 ± 6.25). Branched chain amino acids (BGAAs), sulphur amino acids (SAAs), conditional amino acids (CAAs) and aromatic amino acids (AAAs) proved to be the highest in this group. Correlation coefficient between the risk factors revealed either positive or negative weak correlation except that between serum LDL-C concentration and the amino acids (isoleucine, valine cysteine, tryptophan and tyrosine) and negative association with the protective polyunsaturated fatty acids. CONCLUSION: Participants with breast cancer had the greatest levels of body fatness and unhealthy feeding habits relative to their high calorie, protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake.

Psoriasis is characterized by cutaneous hyperproliferation, secondary to immune system dysregulation. Vitamin A regulates the immune response and sustains epithelial tissue hemostasis. The CYP1A1 gene, has many biological actions, including vitamin A metabolism. To evaluate CYP1A1 gene polymorphism and serum vitamin A level in patients with psoriasis vulgaris, a case-control study involving two groups was conducted: group 1 (45 patients with psoriasis vulgaris) served as the cased group and group 2 (45 healthy participants who were sex and age matched) acted as the control group. CYP1A1 (rs1048943) gene polymorphism and vitamin A serum level were assessed by TaqMan allelic discrimination (PCR) and ELISA, respectively. AG genotype was present only in cases (22.2%), while AA genotype was present in all controls (P=.001). Vitamin A levels were lower in cases than in controls (32.0 ± 7.41 vs. 46.2 ± 15.7 µg/ml, respectively) (P<.001). AG genotype was associated with a lower vitamin A level (P=.001). The detected genotype difference between psoriasis patients and controls, which was associated with a lower serum vitamin A level and was also lower in more severe cases, suggests a role of the CYP1A1 gene and vitamin A in disease pathogenesis and prognosis.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the outcomes of combined levator resection and frontalis muscle advancement for surgical management of recurrent severe congenital ptosis. DESIGN: Retrospective, nonrandomized interventional case series. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of patients who underwent combined levator resection and frontalis muscle advancement for recurrent congenital ptosis between 2017 and 2020. Inclusion criteria were levator function of 4 mm or less and margin reflex distance 1 (MRD1) of 0 mm or less. Main outcome measures were postoperative MRD 1, lagophthalmos, lash angle, and grades of eyelid contour and crease. The outcomes were assessed by reviewing medical charts and photographs. RESULTS: Thirty-one patients (35 eyelids) met the inclusion criteria. The mean preoperative MRD1 was -1.14 ± 1.56 mm, which improved to 3.93 ± 0.52 mm with an average lagophthalmos of 0.91 ± 0.74 mm at the last follow-up. A total of 91.4% of eyelids had excellent eyelid contour, crease, and eyelash angle at the final follow-up. One eyelid required revision surgery. There were no other significant complications. CONCLUSIONS: For poor function recurrent congenital ptosis, combining levator resection and frontalis muscle advancement is an effective method that results in long-term correction with cosmetically pleasing outcomes and minimal complications.

PURPOSE: Several non-lacrimal lesions can present with lacrimal sac area swelling mimicking a dacryocystocele or mucocele with a possibility of misdiagnosis. This study investigates the clinic-radiologic characteristics of the mimicking conditions compared to true lacrimal sac distension. DESIGN: Retrospective, comparative, interventional case series. PARTICIPANTS: Patients referred by primary care ophthalmologists between January 2015 and October 2021 with a misdiagnosis of dacryocystocele or lacrimal sac mucocele (n = 39) and an age-matched group of proven true lacrimal sac swelling (TLS group, n = 44). METHODS: Data collected included demographics, presenting features, investigations, management, histopathology, and outcomes. Both groups were statistically compared for several clinical and radiological variables. RESULTS: Final diagnoses in the mimicking group were skin/subcutaneous swellings (14/39, 35.9%), vascular malformations (10/39, 25.6%), inferomedial anterior orbital cysts (7/39, 17.9%), sino-orbital masses (5/39, 12.8%). Female gender (<0.001), epiphora (p = 0.001), and discharge (p < 0.001) were significantly more frequent in the TLS group. The mimicking group was more likely to be associated with a longer swelling duration (p < 0.001), a swelling extending beyond the lacrimal sac area (p <0.001), orbital signs (p <0.001), and periorbital abnormality. Non-patent lacrimal irrigation (p < 0.001) was significantly more frequent in the TLS group. On imaging, all swellings in the mimicking group were separate from the lacrimal pathway and 94.9% (37/39) extended beyond the lacrimal sac fossa. CONCLUSION: Various cutaneous, subcutaneous, vascular, inferomedial orbital cystic, and sinonasal pathologies can present with lacrimal sac area swelling and mimic a TLS. A high index of suspicion, a thorough clinical evaluation and proper imaging are essential to avoid a misdiagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Different techniques for aortic root enlargement (ARE) have been reported in the literature. Each technique comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. We report our outcomes of Nick's technique for ARE. METHODS: A single-center retrospective data analysis of 31 patients was performed. Patients were operated between May 2015 and November 2017 at Assuit University Heart Hospital, Assuit, Egypt. RESULTS: The median cardiopulmonary bypass time was 125 minutes (range: 90.0-160.0 minutes), with 90 minutes of cross-clamp (range: 60.0-110.0 minutes). Altogether 59% of the patients had mixed aortic valve diseases. Median intensive care unit and total hospital stay were 2 and 5 days, respectively. Patient-prosthesis mismatch was reported in one patient only (3.25%). Two patients died within 30 days. Median pressure gradient across the aortic valve was 20 mm Hg at 3 years of follow-up. CONCLUSION: The benefits of Nick's technique for ARE can be demonstrated in populations with younger patients and complicated pathology. Further research is required in larger patient populations.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a phenotype caused by the interaction of host intrinsic factors such as genetics and gut microbiome, and extrinsic factors such as diet and lifestyle. To demonstrate the interplay of intestinal microbiota with obesity, MetS markers, and some dietary ingredients among samples of Egyptian women. This study was a cross-sectional one that included 115 Egyptian women; 82 were obese (59 without MetS and 23 with MetS) and 33 were normal weight. All participants were subjected to anthropometric assessment, 24 h dietary recall, laboratory evaluation of liver enzymes (AST and ALT), leptin, short chain fatty acids (SCFA), C-reactive protein, fasting blood glucose, insulin, and lipid profile, in addition to fecal microbiota analysis for Lactobacillus, Bifidobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroid. Data showed that the obese women with MetS had the highest significant values of the anthropometric and the biochemical parameters. Obese MetS women consumed a diet high in calories, protein, fat, and carbohydrate, and low in fiber and micronutrients. The Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were the abundant bacteria among the different gut microbiota, with low Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, and insignificant differences between the obese with and without MetS and normal weight women were reported. Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio significantly correlated positively with total cholesterol and LDL-C and negatively with SCFA among obese women with MetS. Findings of this study revealed that dietary factors, dysbiosis, and the metabolic product short chain fatty acids have been implicated in causing metabolic defects.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Catamenial pneumothorax CP is a rare form of spontaneous pneumothorax in females forming part of thoracic endometriosis syndrome. Studies have suggested possible benefit from postoperative hormonal administration. As this treatment is inconsistent, we aimed at performing the first meta-analysis to study the efficacy of adding hormonal treatment after surgery to reduce the chances of recurrent catamenial pneumothorax. METHODS: CENTRAL, MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus were systematically searched from inception up to December 15, 2021. Studies reporting five or more patients with end point outcome were included. The main outcome assessed was postoperative recurrence of CP after hormonal manipulation. Baseline, procedural, outcome, and validity data were systematically appraised and pooled with random-effect methods. meta- regression for the effect of patient age and follow up period were tested. Publication bias was examined. This trial was registered with PROSPERO under registration number CRD42022325377. RESULTS: Our electronic search retrieved 644 citations, 48 of which were selected for full-text review. Eleven studies with a combined population of 111 patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria. All patients reached an endpoint of follow up for postoperative recurrence of catamenial pneumothorax after receiving hormonal treatment. Overall study validity was acceptable, with a median score of 6 on the Newcastle Ottawa scale NOS appraising the quality of observational studies. CP is almost always a right-side disease (107/111 = 96.3 %). The risk of postoperative recurrence with hormonal treatment was 17.3 % (8.9 - 25.8 %) with moderate non-significant heterogeneity (I2 = 40.85 %; P = 0.076). The cumulative risk of recurrence for all patients not receiving postoperative hormonal therapy included in our study was 54.2 % (19/35 patients). Meta regression showed age to be a significant predictor of postoperative recurrence (p = 0.03). As the age increases one year, the risk of recurrence decreases by 6 % (0.2 - 3 %). Publication bias was detected by visualizing the funnel plot of standard error, Egger's test with p < 0.01 and Begg & Mazumdar test with p < 0.01. CONCLUSION: The study included the largest number of CP patients with outcome findings of postoperative recurrence with hormonal treatment despite the small number of studies, non-randomised fashion and publication bias. Our findings recommend the use of hormonal manipulation after thoracic surgical intervention for catamenial pneumothorax unless evident contraindications. Younger patients are at a higher risk of recurrence after surgery.

ABSTRACT

Leptin, produced by adipocytes, regulates metabolism, hunger, and immune response. The inflammatory role of leptin has been linked to autoimmune diseases. To assess leptin gene polymorphism and serum level in alopecia areata and their relation to metabolic syndrome (MS). This case-control study was conducted on 100 alopecia areata patients (50 with MS and 50 without MS) and 50 age- and gender-matched controls. Leptin gene polymorphism and serum level were assessed through the use of PCR and ELISA, respectively. GG genotype was the highest in AA with MS (54%), lower in AA without MS (42%), and the lowest in controls (20%). G allele was more expressed in cases, than in controls (P < .001). The serum leptin level was the highest in AA with MS, lower in AA without MS, and the lowest in controls (P value = 0.001). Leptin level was significantly higher in GG polymorphism than AG and AA. Leptin gene polymorphism (GG genotype) and serum level appear to play a significant role in AA. Absent difference regarding leptin gene polymorphism and MS might indicate a separate inflammatory role of leptin or the future risk of MS development in AA patients.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Etomidate was associated with an inhibition of adrenal steroid synthesis. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of adding low-dose ketamine to etomidate to minimize the decrease in serum cortisol level in critically ill cardiac patients. METHODS: Sixty adult cardiac patients, ≥ 18 years, who underwent upper endoscopy and Colonoscopy to manage acute anemia in the cardiac intensive care units were enrolled. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: (group (E): n = 30) received etomidate 0.2 mg/kg IV followed by etomidate 0.05 mg/kg IV, and (group (KE): n = 30) received ketamine 0.5 mg/kg IV, then etomidate 0.1 mg/kg IV, followed by etomidate 0.05 mg/kg IV. The primary outcome was Serum cortisol level at 6 h after the procedure. RESULTS: The mean postoperative cortisol level was significantly lower in group E (295.60 ± 49.218 nmol/L) versus group KE (461.00 ± 67.946 nmol/L), with 95% CI = 351.94 to 404.66; p = 0.000. In addition, the estimated serum cortisol reduction level was also significant between groups; In group E, the estimated cortisol level decreased nearly 53% from 632.40 ± 35.066 nmol/L to 295.60 ± 49.218 nmol/L 6 hours postoperative. While in group KE, the estimated cortisol level decreased only 27% from 639.13 ± 43.035 nmol/L to 461.00 ± 67.946 nmol/L. CONCLUSIONS: Single-dose ketamine (0.5 mg/kg) was helpful to decrease the total dose of etomidate and hence decreased the percentage of serum cortisol level in such critically ill patients with preservation of patient satisfaction. INTRODUCTION: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease with many risk factors including inadequate nutrient intake and nutritional deficiencies, which affect the immune system, and influence leprosy progression. OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the relation between the serum level of zinc, vitamin C, and selenium and the clinical spectrum of leprosy. METHODOLOGY: A case control study included 100 leprotic patients (50 multibacillary and 50 paucibacillary) and 100 age and sex matched controls. Vitamin C was measured by ELISA, zinc was measured by using centronic colorimetric spectrophotometry, and selenium was measured by Inductivity Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy technique. RESULTS: Zinc and Vitamin C levels were significantly lower in paucibacillary (mean ± SD = 89.86 ± 20.712 and 2.52 ± 1.27 respectively) and multibacillary (mean ± SD = 81.41 ± 18.61 and 1.98 ± 0.59 respectively) than in controls (mean ± SD = 107.34 ± 3.98 and 4.95 ± 2.45 respectively) (p value < 0.001) with no significant difference between paucibacillary and multibacillary patients (p value = 0.142 and = 0.066 respectively). Selenium level showed no significant difference between the three groups (p value > 0.05) (mean ± SD = 51.27 ± 42.61 in paucibacillary, 47.54 ± 30.21 in multibacillary, and 44.07 ± 46.58 in controls). CONCLUSIONS: Lower serum levels of zinc and vitamin C in leprosy patients may be a result of disease pathogenesis or related to the antioxidants based treatment. It might also present prior to the disease onset due to malnutrition that may have accelerated the development of leprosy.

Psoriasis is an immune-mediated skin disease with a potential morbidity in patients. Cold-inducible RNA binding protein (CIRP) is a stress responsive protein having diverse roles in cancer and inflammation. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of CIRP, (serum and tissue), in psoriasis patients and to correlate this expression to the clinico-pathological data of the patients. The serum level and tissue expression of CIRP were compared between 20 patients and 20 healthy controls. Additionally, the association between CIRP level and various clinicopathological parameters was done. The serum level of CIRP was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) while its tissue expression was detected via immunohistochemistry. CIRP was expressed in the epidermis of all studied cases and controls with nuclear localization. A significant difference in its epidermal expression between lesional, perilesional cases and controls was observed. It was higher in control epidermis than perilesional skin and the lowest in lesional skin. Conversely, the serum CIRP level was significantly higher in psoriasis patients compared to healthy subjects. CIRP seemed to have a significant pathologic role in psoriasis patients with evident difference in its intracellular and extracellular expression levels suggesting a potential difference it its function.
