ABSTRACT

After post-mortem coronary angiography the degree of ventricular hypertrophy was estimated on 18 hearts. The cases were divided in three groups: 9 hearts with right ventricular hypertrophy, 4 hearts with left ventricular hypertrophy and 5 hearts with hypertrophy of both ventricles. Cytophotometric studies revealed a close correlation between absolute weight of heart segments and DNA content of muscle cell nuclei of both ventricles . Radius and area of lumen, thickness and area of both intima and media were measured at serial cross sections of all three coronary arteries. Using these data indices on coronary sclerosis and, including the heart weight, indices on coronary insufficiency were calculated. By determining these indices for the isolated right and left ventricle and the interventricular septum additional criteria suggesting failure of coronary perfusion were obtained. These criteria disclosed that in cases of right ventricular hypertrophy the connective tissue of the right ventricular myocardium was increased only at high values of the insufficiency indices. On the other hand in cases of left ventricular hypertrophy the morphological features of decreased perfusion of the right ventricle were observed at low index values. In all three groups the increased vulnerability of the left ventricle to failure of coronary perfusion was numerically proved.

ABSTRACT

Three cases of giant cell fibroma of the vocal cord are reported. The histological and cytological features of the extirpated tissue confirm the benigne character of these tumors.

ABSTRACT

209 mammary biopsies were evaluated by cytological and histological methods. 23 of them were analysed by microspectrophotometry. 9,5% of the cases could be classified as Papanicolaou III. At one hand the mammary carcinomas of this group were underestimated, on the other hand fibroadenomas and hyperplastic lesions of cystic disease of the breast were overevaluated. The DNA-histograms of these fibroadenomas and hyperplastic lesions reflect closely the tendency of proliferation of epithelium and correspond with the cytomorphological findings, a reliable differentiation of these diseases on the basis of a tumor-histogram is not possible. False negative tumor histograms are particularly found in high differentiated carcinomas. In the other groups the cytological findings were in agreement with histological examination in 92-98% of the cases.

ABSTRACT

The ganglioneuroma is a rare, benign tumor of the small bowel. The clinical symptomatology and morphology of the tumor are presented in detail. The differences in histopathology between ganglioneuroma and eosinophilic granulomatous polyp are discussed. Therapy should be resection of the tumor.

ABSTRACT

Experimental transformation of leishmaniasis from man to man was demonstrated. The infection occurs through direct inoculation of the leishmania organism in the amastigote form: from an ulcer of a leishmania papule some materials were obtained and were inoculated intradermally in the thigh of one of the authors. Within weeks a red papule has developed in the place of inoculation from which the microorganisms were frequenctly demonstrated. The papule was cured spontaneously within 70 weeks under a formation of a flat pigmented scar. In the electronenmicroscopy the microorganisms were seen to be located intracellular. The microorganism had a double outer membrane, an oval nucleus, and a kinetoplast out of which (in the phlebotomus fly or in the culture) the future flagellum would be formed.
