ABSTRACT

A retrospective study was carried out to compare two techniques of introducing additional gas into the stomach for double contrast examination. Forty films were assessed by two radiologists and the analysis of the results showed that effervescent granules were slightly better than the effervescent health salt in terms of the coating and definition but not statistically different in terms of the amount of bubbles and distension. Considering that the cost of the effervescent granules is over eight times that of the salt, it is suggested that the analytical difference may not be worth the extra expense. (AU)

ABSTRACT

The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) secretion has been described in a wide range of neurological and other disorders. We wish to add an extremely rare case of a solitary, large invasive neurofibroma of the sixth cranial nerve extensively destroying the sella turcica in the skull base and causing inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone in a 44-year-old black man in the absence of neurofibromatosis. ABSTRACT

Values for roentgenographic skull volume estimated with the help of McKinnon's formula in 331 black normocephalic children between the ages of one month and five years, using standard anteroposterior and lateral skull films, are presented. Mean skull volume was higher among boys at all ages after the first six months of life. Significant linear correlation was seen between log-age and skull volume for both sexes. The roentgenographic skull volume in Jamaican children was more or less similar to that of British and Indian children (AU)

ABSTRACT

Three hundred and thirty lateral skull films obtained from apparently healthy normocephalic Jamaican children between the age of one month and five years were studied, using bony reference points nasion (N), tuberculum sellae (Ts), internal occipital prominence (IOP), inion (I), bregma (B) and lambda (L). Cranial-base length was measured between N-Ts, Ts-IOP and N-I. Calvarial height was measured between Ts-B, N-Ts and Ts-L and N-I and Ts-L at all the ages and in both sexes. Ratios between lengths of anterior and posterior cranial-base, as well as between cranial-base lengths and anterior cranial heights, were nearly constant at all the ages and in both sexes. These observations support the view that there is definite proportionality between the growth of anterior calvarial height and cranial-base lengths. On the other hand, a significant increase with age was seen in the ratios N-Ts/Ts-L, N-I/Ts/L and Ts/B/Ts-L, suggesting a progressive decrease in growth of posterior calvarial height. A comparison of the data with previously published figures for Indian and Norwegian populations suggests a racial difference in the various cranial-base and calvarial ratios. (AU)

ABSTRACT

A prospective study of the renal abnormalities on excretion urography in 189 patients with homozygous sickle cell disease is presented. Demonstrable abnormalities were present in 69 percent but there was no correlation with symptomatology. Calyceal clubbing was the most common abnormality occurring in 39 percent of cases and its incidence increased with age. An unexpected high prevalence (23 percent) of papillary necrosis occurred and both sinuses and cavities were demonstrated. The reasons for this high prevalence are discussed. The urographic findings did not correlate significantly with hematological features of the disease. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Roentgen pathology in Jamaica includes, inter alia, skeletal changes caused by avitaminoses, infectious diseases such as syphillis or tuberculosis, and sickle cell anemia. This form of anaemia may produce also renal papillary necrosis. Worm infection with stronglyoides stercoralis causes extensive inflammatory changes in the small bowel. Malformations of the urinary tract and bones are relatively common. (AU)

ABSTRACT

The radiographic changes in nine cases of chondrolysis of the hip joint are described. The series consists of eight Negro girls and one Indian girl, whose ages ranged from eleven to eighteen years. The incidence of periarticular osteoporosis, joint space narrowing, erosion of articular cortex, femoral head enlargement, increase in width of the femoral neck and growth plate narowing are reported. The difficulty in the diagnosis of chronic monarticular disease of the hip is stressed and the observed changes are discussed with particular reference to monaticular rheumatoid arthritis. The material presented supports the view that `chondrolysis of the hip' is a distinct entity (AU)

ABSTRACT

Over 250 cases of intralobar pulmonary sequestration have now been reported (Ranniger and Valvassori, 1964). The diagnosis which may be suscepted on the clinical, plain radiograph and bronchographic findings, depends on the angiographic or operative demonstration of an aberrant systemic arterial supply to the affected segment. The preoperative angiographic visualization of this pulmonary systemic arterialization arising from the thoracic or abdominal aorta either as a single large vessel (McDowell, Robb, and Indyk, 1955) or as multiple small arteries (Turk and Lindskog, 1961) to a large extent eliminates the operative hazards (Harris and Lewis, 1940). This paper reports an unusual case of pulmonary intralobar sequestration in association with bilateral aberrant systemic arteries. The angiographic and operative findings suggest that this may be a case of bilateral pulmonary sequestration (Summary)
