ABSTRACT

The jaboticaba tree (Plinia peruviana (Poir.) Govaerts) is a native Brazilian species, and its fruits are very popular in Brazil. The purpose of this study was to model the diameter growth, and determine the age of jaboticaba trees in four natural populations in Southwest of Paraná State, Brazil. The knowledge of the growth dynamics of this species is essential to assist management and conservation strategies and to discover when this species was established in the region. Core samples were collected to obtain complete growth series by measurement of annual growth rings. The series were crossdated, seven growth models were adjusted, and the best model for each site and a general model were selected using statistics rules. The time series spanned periods of ~75 to ~100 years, and growth ranged between 0.27 and 0.37 cm year-1. Chapman-Richards' model showed better adherence for locations individually, and Monomolecular when grouped. Because to the age reached by the jaboticaba trees and the high density of this species in these natural populations, consequently named "jaboticabais", it was inferred that there was an anthropogenic action in the dispersion and formation of the settlements through the indigenous and caboclos that inhabited the region before 1940. Also, this is the first work to register and verify the fusion of trunks for species of the Plinia genus using double piths found in samples, a feature that must be considered to avoid overestimating the age of jaboticaba trees based solely on measuring tree diameter.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Understanding morphological and physiological changes under different light conditions in native fruit species in juveniles' stage is important, as it indicate the appropriate environment to achieve vigorous saplings. We aimed to verify growth and morphophysiological changes under shade gradient in feijoa (Acca sellowiana (O. Berg) Burret) to achieve good quality saplings adequate to improve cultivation in orchards. The saplings were grown for twenty-one-month under four shading treatments (0%, 30%, 50%, and 80%). Growth, photosynthetic pigments, gas exchanges, chlorophyll fluorescence, and leaf anatomy parameters were evaluated. Saplings under full sun and 30% shade had higher height and diameter growth and dry mass accumulation due to higher photosynthesis rate. As main acclimatization mechanisms in feijoa saplings under 80% shade were developed larger leaf area, reduced leaf blade thickness, and enhanced quantum yield of photosystem II. Even so, the net CO2 assimilation and the electron transport rate was lower and, consequently, there was a restriction on the growth and dry mass in saplings under deep shade. Therefore, to obtain higher quality feijoa saplings, we recommend that it be carried out in full sun or up to 30% shade, to maximize the sapling vigor in nurseries and, later, this light environment can also be used in orchards for favor growth and fruit production.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The angiotensin type 1 (AT1) receptor has been implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bone disorders. This study aimed to investigate the effect of an AT1 receptor antagonist in infection-induced and arthritis-associated alveolar bone loss in mice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Mice were subjected to Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans oral infection or antigen-induced arthritis and treated daily with 10 mg/kg of the prototype AT1 antagonist, losartan. Treatment was conducted for 30 d in the infectious condition and for 17 d and 11 d in the preventive or therapeutic regimens in the arthritic model, respectively. The mice were then killed, and the maxillae, serum and knee joints were collected for histomorphometric and immunoenzymatic assays. In vitro osteoclast assays were performed using RAW 264.7 cells stimulated with A. actinomycetemcomitans lipopolysacharide (LPS). RESULTS: Arthritis and A. actinomycetemcomitans infection triggered significant alveolar bone loss in mice and increased the levels of myeloperoxidase and of TRAP(+) osteoclasts in periodontal tissues. Losartan abolished such a phenotype, as well as the arthritis joint inflammation. Both arthritis and A. actinomycetemcomitans conditions were associated with the release of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interferon-gamma, interleukin-17 and chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 1 and an increased RANKL/osteoprotegerin ratio in periodontal tissues, but such expression decreased after losartan treatment, except for TNF-α. The therapeutic approach was as beneficial as the preventive one. In vitro, losartan prevented LPS-induced osteoclast differentiation and activity. CONCLUSION: The blockade of AT1 receptor exerts anti-inflammatory and anti-osteoclastic effects, thus protecting periodontal tissues in distinct pathophysiological conditions of alveolar bone loss.

ABSTRACT

5-Lipoxygenase (5-LO) metabolites are important pro-inflammatory lipid mediators. However, much still remains to be understood about the role of such mediators in bone remodeling. This study aimed to investigate the effect of 5-LO metabolites, LTB4 and CysLTs, in a model of mechanical loading-induced bone remodeling. Strain-induced tooth movement and consequently alveolar bone resorption/apposition was achieved by using a coil spring placed on molar and attached to incisors of C57BL6 (wild-type-WT), 5-LO deficient mice (5-LO(-/-)) and mice treated with 5-LO inhibitor (zileuton-ZN) or with antagonist of CysLTs receptor (montelukast-MT). The amount of bone resorption and the number of osteoclasts were determined morphometrically. The expression of inflammatory and bone remodeling markers in periodontium was analyzed by qPCR. Osteoclast differentiation and TNF-α production were evaluated in vitro using RAW 264.7 cells treated with LTB4 or LTD4. Bone resorption, TRAP(+) cells and expression of Tnfa, Il10 and Runx2 were significantly diminished in 5-LO(-/-), ZN- and MT-treated mice. The expression of Rank was also reduced in 5-LO(-/-) and MT-treated mice. Accordingly, LTB4 and LTD4 in association with RANKL promoted osteoclast differentiation and increased TNF-α release in vitro. These data demonstrate that the absence of 5-LO metabolites, LTB4 and CysLTs reduces osteoclast recruitment and differentiation, consequently diminishing bone resorption induced by mechanical loading. Thus, 5-LO might be a potential target for controlling bone resorption in physiological and pathological conditions.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of synthetic insecticides used in the cotton crop on eggs and third-instar larvae of the ladybeetle Cycloneda sanguinea (Linnaeus, 1763) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). The products used in g a.i. L-1 of water were triflumuron 0.048 (Certero 480 SC), spinosad 0.24 (Tracer 480 SC), chlorfenapyr 1.2 (Pirate 240 SC), chlothianidin 0.33 (Focus 500 WP) and imidacloprid 0.33 + ß-cyfluthrin 0.042 (Connect 100 + 12.5 SC). Distilled water was used as a control. Both eggs and larvae were distributed in Petri dishes and treated with the insecticides by spraying in a Potter’s tower. A fully randomized experimental design, with five replications and six treatments consisting of five pesticides and one control was used. Each plot consisted of ten eggs or third-instar larvae. The embryonic period and viability of the treated eggs; survival and duration of third-instar larvae; survival and duration of larval and pupal stages of development; sexual ratio, and the total number of eggs laid by the surviving mated females from treated eggs and third-instar larvae were evaluated. The tests were carried out at 25 ± 2º C, RH 60 ± 10% and 12h-photophase. Triflumuron 0.048 was innocuous to the predator’s eggs and slightly harmful to third-instar larvae. Spinosad 0.24 was slightly harmful to eggs and third-instar larvae, whereas chlofernapyr 1.2, chlothianidin 0.33 and imidacloprid 0.33 + ß-cyfluthrin 0.042 were harmful to eggs and third-instar larvae of C. sanguinea.

ABSTRACT

Optical properties of highly transparent blends formed by bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and doped with either europium(III) thenoyltrifluoroacetone hydrate [Eu(TTA)(3)-hydrate] or terbium(III) acetylacetonate hydrate [Tb(ACAC)(3)-hydrate] were studied. From the absorption/emission spectra (200 to 800 nm), percolation limits of less than 0.4 wt/wt% for Eu and above 0.7 wt/wt% for Tb were found. Lifetimes for 20/80 and 60/40 Tb-doped blends were from 1.0 to 1.5 ms, respectively, about 5 times longer than for a similar blend prepared with Langmuir-Blodgett film. For blends doped with Eu, the lifetimes were from 0.4 to 0.8 ms, almost double that for the pure complex. The results indicated interactions between the PC/PMMA blends and the rare-earth ion complex. Particularly, photoluminescent spectra evidenced the incorporation of the Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) ions into the blend, with quenching observed near 1.0 wt/wt%, except for the 20/80 blend doped with Eu ion, in which luminescence increased to 5 wt/wt %.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

In this paper we argue that the effects of irregular chaotic motion of particles transported by blood can play a major role in the development of serious circulatory diseases. Vessel wall irregularities modify the flow field, changing in a nontrivial way the transport and activation of biochemically active particles. We argue that blood particle transport is often chaotic in realistic physiological conditions. We also argue that this chaotic behavior of the flow has crucial consequences for the dynamics of important processes in the blood, such as the activation of platelets which are involved in the thrombus formation.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of Nim-I-Go on pupae and adults of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). The neem-based insecticide Nim-I-Go was used in the following concentrations (%) in the pupae trial: 0.5; 1.0; 2.0 and 5.0; equivalent to (in mg of azadirachtin/L of water) 5 mg/L, 10 mg/L, 20 mg/L and 50 mg/L, respectively. In the larvae trial the following concentrations were used: 0.25; 0.5; 0.75; 1.0 and 2.0; equivalent to (in mg of azadirachtin/L) 2.5 mg/L, 5.0 mg/L, 7.5 mg/L, 10 mg/L and 20 mg/L, respectively. Chlorpyrifos was used as a negative control (0.48 g a.i./L) in both trials, and water as a positive control. The bioassays were carried out at 25 ± 2o C, RH of 70 ± 10%, and 12-h of photophase. The sprayings were carried out using a Potters tower, ensuring the application of 1.5 ± 0.5 mg/cm2. Survival of pupae and adults, and the effects of the insecticides on the reproductive capacity of this predator were evaluated. The total toxic effect (E) of the insecticides was calculated according to the standard methodology established by IOBC. Nim-I-Go was harmless to pupae and adults of C. externa. Chlorpyrifos was harmful to this natural enemy.

ABSTRACT

A joint use of experimental and theoretical techniques allows us to understand the key role of intermediate- and short-range defects in the structural and electronic properties of ZnO single crystals obtained by means of both conventional hydrothermal and microwave-hydrothermal synthesis methods. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, photoluminescence, scanning electronic and transmission electron microscopies were used to characterize the thermal properties, crystalline and optical features of the obtained nano and microwires ZnO structures. In addition, these properties were further investigated by means of two periodic models, crystalline and disordered ZnO wurtzite structure, and first principles calculations based on density functional theory at the B3LYP level. The theoretical results indicate that the key factor controlling the electronic behavior can be associated with a symmetry breaking process, creating localized electronic levels above the valence band.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of azadirachtin and some synthetic insecticides used in the cotton crops on eggs and firstand fourth-instar larvae of Cycloneda sanguinea (Linnaeus). The neem-based insecticide Nim-I-Go was used in the following concentrations: 1% (10 mg of azadirachtin/L), 5% (50 mg of azadirachtin/L) and 10% (100 mg of azadirachtin/L). The synthetic insecticides teflubenzuron (Nomolt 150 SC) (0.15 g a.i./ L), lambdacyhalothrin (Karate Zeon 250 CS (0.08 g a.i./L) and chlorpyrifos (Vexter 480 CE) (1.6 g a.i./L) also were used in this study. Distilled water was used as control. A fully randomized experimental design was used, with seven treatments and six replicates, each one formed of three eggs or larvae of C. sanguinea. A manual sprayer was used to spew the solutions. The bioassays were kept in a room at 25±2oC, RH of 70±10% and 12h photophase. The insects were fed with Schizaphis graminum (Rondani). Lambdacyhalothrin and chlorpyrifos were harmful to all stages of C. sanguinea. Azadirachtin at 50 and 100 mg;L was toxic to fourth-instar larvae of C. sanguinea. Based in its low toxicity, azadirachtin 10 mg/L and teflubenzuron present favorable characteristics for use in the integrated pest management where C. sanguinea is an important factor of natural mortality of pests.

Os inseticidas utilizados foram teflubenzurom (Nomolt 150 SC) (0,15 g i.a./L), lambdacialotrina (Karate Zeon 250 CS) (0,08 g i.a./L) e clorpirifós (Vexter 480 CE) (1,6 g i.a./L).
