ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Despite the confirmed association between higher BMI with increased risk of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), the association between obesity with mortality in critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is not clear. The present study aimed to investigate the association between obesity with treatment duration, ICU length of stay, and the risk of death in critically ill patients with COVID-19. METHODS: This case-control study was performed on 223 patients with COVID-19 including 148 surviving patients as the control group and 75 eventually dead patients as the case group in Rasht, Iran. Data on demographic factors, comorbidities, anthropometric measurements, the length of hospitalization and the mortality were obtained from patients' medical records. RESULTS: The mortality rate was significantly associated with weight (OR = 1.04, 95% CI: 1.002-1.083, p = .04), but not with BMI after adjustments for age, gender, length of stay in ICU, chronic diseases and smoking. The results did not change after further adjustments for biochemical and pathological factors. CONCLUSIONS: Weight was positively associated with mortality after controlling for confounding variables. Further studies should consider the patient's body composition such as fat mass to establish the relationship between obesity and COVID-19 outcomes.

ABSTRACT

The summer and winter concentrations of BTEX pollutants were investigated in various workplaces of an oil Refinery, Iran. In total 252 air samples from the breathing zones of the following employees were collected: supervisors, safetymen, repairmen, site men, and all workers. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk values were calculated based on the USEPA methodology using Monte Carlo simulations. BTEX concentrations were higher in the summer than in the winter season for all workstations, especially for toluene and ethylbenzene. The mean values of exposure to benzene for repairmen and site men were higher than threshold limit value of 1.60 mg/m3 for both seasons. Non-carcinogenic risk (HQ) values calculated for summer season for benzene, ethylbenzene, and xylene in all workstations, as well as for toluene for repairmen and site men exceeded acceptable level of 1. In winter season the mean HQ values for benzene and xylene in all workstations, for toluene for repairmen and site men, and for ethylbenzene for supervisors, repairmen, and site men were also > 1. For all workstations definite carcinogenic risk was indicated as calculated LCR values for benzene and ethylbenzene exposure were higher than 1 × 10-4 in both summer and winter seasons.

ABSTRACT

Malignant gliomas have been categorized as a debilitating class of brain tumors that are resistant to radiation and chemotherapeutic drugs, and have a poor prognosis. Hyper-activation of PI3K/AKT pathway and overexpression of p-glycoprotein transporter contributes to enhanced glioblastoma survival and chemoresistance. Resveratrol which possibly inhibits PI3K pathway, has been thus investigated for a potential therapeutic role in glioma. In the present study, the effect of resveratrol on human U87MG and doxorubicin-resistant glioblastoma cells (U87MG/DOX) survival evaluated by MTT. The ability of resveratrol to overcome doxorubicin resistance in glioblastoma cells was also explored with Rhodamines 123 uptake and ELISA assays. Resveratrol reduced cell survival in a PTEN and P53-dependent manner which was an effect associated with the inhibition of PI3K signaling pathway and via the activation of P-glycoprotein. Our finding showed that resveratrol, as a glioblastoma cell growth inhibitor and chemosensitizer, could be promising if used in the treatment of brain cancer. Resveratrol inhibits the progression of glioblastoma cells and reverses chemoresistance by upregulating PTEN, and suppressing AKT and P-glycoprotein. Targeting PTEN with resveratrol may offer a novel therapeutic approach for the chemo-sensitization of glioblastoma cells.

ABSTRACT

A simple and precise analytical approach developed for single and simultaneous determination of resorcinol (RC) and hydroquinone (HQ) in pharmaceutical samples using carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate as ionic liquid and ZnFe2O4 nanoparticle. A significant enhancement in the peak current and sensitivity of the proposed sensor observed by using modifiers in the composition of working electrode compared to bare CPE which is in accordance with the results obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy investigations. Electrochemical investigations revealed a well-defined irreversible oxidation peak for RC over a wide concentration range from 3.0 µM to 500 µM in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (pH 6.0) with the linear regression equations of Ip (µA) = 0.0276 CRC (µM) + 0.5508 (R2 = 0.997). The limit of detection and quantification for RC analysis were found to be 1.46 µM and 4.88 µM, respectively. However, the obtained SW voltammograms for simultaneous determination of RC and HQ exhibited a desirable peak separation of about 360 mV potential difference and a satisfactory linear response over the range of 50-700 µM and 5-350 µM with the favorable correlation coefficient of 0.991 and 0.995, respectively. The diffusion coefficient (D) of RC and the electron transfer coefficient (α) at the surface of ZnFe2O4/NPs/IL/CPE estimated to be 2.83 × 10- 4 cm s- 1 and 0.76. The proposed sensor as a promising and low-cost method successfully applied for determination of RC in commercial pharmaceutical formulations such as the resorcinol cream of 2% O/W emulsion available on the market with the recovery of 98.47 ± 0.04.
