ABSTRACT

Chromatophoromas are neoplasms arising from pigment-bearing cells (chromatophores) of the dermis. While isolated cases have been reported in the literature, the prevalence and biological behavior of chromatophoromas in snakes are unknown. Forty-two chromatophoromas were identified among 4663 submissions (0.9%) to a private diagnostic laboratory in a 16-year period. The most commonly affected snakes were colubrids (23 cases, 55%) and vipers (8 cases, 19%). The San Francisco garter snake was the most commonly affected species (6 cases; 14% of all affected snake species and 3.7% of all garter snake submissions). No sex predilection was found. The age of 28 snakes ranged from 5 to 27 years. Single cutaneous chromatophoromas were most commonly observed and presented as pigmented cutaneous masses or plaques along any body segment. Euthanasia or death due to progressive neoplastic disease or metastasis was reported in 8 (19%) and 4 (10%) cases, respectively. The survival time of 4 animals ranged from 4 to 36 months. Microscopically, xanthophoromas, iridophoromas, melanocytic neoplasms, and mixed chromatophoromas were identified, with melanocytic neoplasms being most common. Microscopic examination alone was generally sufficient for the diagnosis of chromatophoroma, but immunohistochemistry for S-100 and PNL-2 may be helpful for diagnosing poorly pigmented cases. Moderate to marked nuclear atypia appears to be consistently present in cutaneous chromatophoromas with a high risk of metastasis, while mitotic count, lymphatic invasion, the level of infiltration, and the degree of pigmentation or ulceration were not reliable predictors of metastasis.

ABSTRACT

A 27 year old woman developed a painful swelling inthe left scapular region accompanied by a limitation inmovement following trauma. She underwent partial resectionof the mass which was diagnosed histologically as anextraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. She was treatedwith 5 cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy which reducedthe primary tumour by 30% and the metastases by 60%.Subsequently, a three dimensional resection was carried outand a 10 × 9 × 5 cm tumour with free edges was removed. She was treated with a further 2 cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy, but with no response, after which she died. Thisaggressive type of sarcomas has a high risk of both localrecurrence and metastases, predominately to the lungs andbones(AU)

ABSTRACT

Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the lung (LELC) is considered a subtype of undifferentiated large cell carcinoma. It´s a rare tumor. It is imperative that a nasopharynx origin is actively excluded in all cases. The choice treatment is surgical resection. Experience with systematic chemotherapy or radiotherapy in the treatment of LELC is limited

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To evaluate nursing practice in periodic health examination. METHODS: We make a retrospective evaluation of process data through 10 explicit criteria. We selected a random sample (in evaluation process) and a institutional based sample and population universe (re-evaluation process) of both male and female patients who underwent health examination in nursing consults of a urban health center. RESULTS: We found a substantial improvement in fulfilling degree in 8 out of criteria, although best standard only was reached in 3 criteria (blood pressure determination, somatometrics and tobacco smoking investigation). We also remark the high proportion of risk factors, tobacco smoking (51.6%), obesity (37.6%) and dyslipemia (25.5%). CONCLUSIONS: We remark the importance of entering and developing evaluation and quality assurance methodology among common tasks of primary care teams and correct ubication of periodic health examination in nursing process.

ABSTRACT

The slipping rib syndrome can be produced by a direct or indirect traumatism over the sternal tip of the costal cartilages 8, 9 and 10. The main complains are abdominal pain in the right or left upper abdominal, quadrants, and sometimes a sensation of rubbing or slipping of the ribs. The hoocking maneuver is useful in the diagnosis of this syndrome. Three clinical cases of the slipping rib syndrome are reported. This syndrome must be taken into account is the differential diagnosis of the abdominal pain in pediatric patients.
