ABSTRACT

A new method based on neural network theory is presented to analyze and quantify the information content of far UV circular dichroism spectra. Using a backpropagation network model with a single hidden layer between input and output, it was possible to deduce five different secondary structure fractions (helix, parallel and antiparallel beta-sheet, beta-turn and random coil) with satisfactory correlations between calculated and measured secondary structure data. We demonstrate that for each wavelength interval a specific network is suitable. The remaining discrepancy between the secondary structure data from neural network prediction and crystallography may be attributed to errors in the determination of protein concentration and random noise in the CD signal, as indicated by simulations.

ABSTRACT

Fifty patients with moderate or severe bronchitis were randomly allocated into groups receiving orally either 1000 mg amoxycillin twice daily or 750 mg three times daily. Overall cure rates (both 92%) and the incidence of side-effects (4% and 8%, respectively) were similar in both groups. A twice daily regimen, therefore, seems to be as effective as conventional treatment and has the advantage of being more convenient for the patient.

ABSTRACT

In patients with pulmonary emphysema the course of PO2 and of pulmonary and systemic circulation is analysed under exercise up to the performance limit and to PO2 reduction. By alterations of breathing mechanics frequent emphysematous persons and associated with bronchial obstructions under increased intrapulmonary pressure by forced ventilation a group of patients may be found with a quick limitation of performance by hindering the intrathoracic circulation followed by reduction of the systemic blood pressure. A pulmonary arterial hypertension cannot be seen in these cases. The registration of the parameters of breathing mechanics during exercise testing is recommended.

ABSTRACT

Report on three cases of bronchial atresia. Two patients had an atresia of a segmental bronchus with consecutive bronchocele and regional hyperinflation, one patient had an atresia of a lobar bronchus. The diagnosis is made by association of radiologic and bronchologic analysis. Possible pathogenetic mechanisms are briefly discussed.
