ABSTRACT

To explore the possible impact of 2-Phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA) on the function of a sunscreen, in this work we investigate the binding of copper metal ions (Cu2+) to PBSA. Due to the existence of an intrinsic interaction phenomenon between Cu2+ ions and PBSA molecules, the photoluminescence (PL) quenching arises owing to the charge transfer from PBSA to Cu2+ ions. The mechanism of fluorescence quenching is probed experimentally following excitation at 306 nm by evaluating various quenching parameters with the help of the Stern-Volmer plot. Through the assessment of the values of the Stern-Volmer constant ( K SV = 45.2 M - 1 ) and bimolecular quenching rate constant ( k q = 0.77 × 10 10 M - 1 . s - 1 ), it is deduced that the dynamic mode of PL quenching is operative between PBSA and Cu2+ ions. We evaluate the number of binding sites (n = 1) that advocate the presence of a single binding site in PBSA for Cu2+ ions. The numerical value of standard Gibbs free energy change, Δ G o ~ -27.485 kJ.mol-1 implies the spontaneous binding between Cu2+ ions and PBSA molecules. The results obtained give an insight into the mechanism of metal-induced PL quenching of water soluble PBSA sunscreen.

ABSTRACT

Apart from biocompatibility, ZnO quantum dots (QDs) are considered to be an efficient luminescence material due to their low cost and high redox potential. Here, we report the synthesis of ZnO QDs by using five different functionalizing ligands like mercaptoacetic acid (MAA), 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA), octadecene (ODE), ethylene glycol (EG), and oleyl amine (OLA) and fabricate their assemblies with graphene oxide (GO). We investigate the role of functionalizing ligands as a surface modifier of ZnO QDs for their attachment to GO. The steady-state photoluminescence (SSPL) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) analyses demonstrate the photoluminescence (PL) quenching of ZnO QDs in ZnO QDs-GO assembly. The highest reduction in PL intensity is observed with ZnO QDs-GO assembly with EG as a surface functionalizing ligand. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis confirms the feasibility of charge transfer from ZnO QDs to the GO. The maximum (79.43%) charge transfer efficiency (ECT ) is observed in the case of ZnO-MAA-GO as compared to other assemblies. This means the thiol group-containing ligands facilitate charge transfer as compared to hydroxyl and amine group ligands. This leads to the conclusion that charge transfer in ZnO QDs-GO assemblies depends strongly on the nature of surface ligands.

In this article, we report the synthesis of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) by hydrothermal method and surface modified CdS quantum dots (QDs) via the colloidal method and the fabrication of their dyad. The CdS QDs functionalized by mercaptoacetic acid (MAA) attach to the GQDs via electrostatic interactions. Spectral overlapping between the emission spectrum of GQDs and the absorption spectrum of CdS QDs allows efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from GQDs to the CdS QDs in the GQDs-CdS QDs dyads. The magnitude of FRET efficiency (E) and the rate of energy transfer (kE) assessed by the photoluminescence (PL) decay kinetics are ~61.84% and ⁓3.8 × 108 s- 1, respectively. These high values of FRET efficiency and energy transfer rate can be assigned to the existence of strong electrostatic interactions between GQDs and CdS QDs, which arise due to the presence of polar functionalities on the surface of both GQDs and CdS QDs. The understanding of energy transfer in the luminescent donor-acceptor FRET system is of significant importance and the practical implications of such FRET systems could overall improve the efficiency of photovoltaics, sensing, imaging and optoelectronic devices.

ABSTRACT

The combination of halide perovskite NCs with graphene to design heterostructures has proven to be a promising candidate for energy applications, optoelectronics, and photocatalysis. Efficient light energy absorption in perovskite NC-graphene heterostructures is of fundamental importance owing to their optoelectronic applications. A detailed understanding of the important process for device action, particularly interfacial charge transfer (CT), has thus far lingered subtly. This study describes the influence of the different surface functionalities of graphene on the CT dynamics in FAPbBr3 NCs attached to functionalized graphene heterostructures. Functionalized graphenes i.e., graphene oxide (GO) and amino acids (alanine (Ala), tyrosine (Tyr) and cysteine (Cys)) functionalized GO, were synthesized. By assembling the heterostructures of functionalized graphene with NCs, the quenching of photoluminescence (PL) of the FAPbBr3 NCs was observed. The photo-generated hole transfer from FAPbBr3 to functionalized graphene is responsible for PL quenching, which is supported by time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis. Our study revealed that the rate of CT and charge transfer efficiency (ECT) strongly depend on the nature of the functionalizing moieties. The highest hole transfer efficiency for NC-functionalized graphene heterostructures was observed in the case of cysteine-functionalized GO (88.84%) and the lowest with GO (38.15%). This suggests that cysteine-functionalized graphene is the best hole acceptor amongst all functionalized graphenes. This study offers a method to regulate energetics and investigate the extent of hole transfer in perovskite NCs and functionalized graphene heterostructures. These findings tend to draw new directions to stimulate advance research regarding the fundamental understanding of hole transfer in surface-modified donor-acceptor heterostructures for light harvesting assemblies, especially solar cells.

In this article, we report the band gap tuning of ternary ZnCdS quantum dots (QDs) by varying the concentration of the capping ligand, mercaptoacetic acid (MAA). The functionalization of QDs leads to the control of their size and band gap due to the quantum confinement effect, causing blue shift in the absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra with a gradual change in the concentration of the capping ligand from 0.5 to 2.5 M. Ensulizole (2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid) is an important organic ultraviolet (UV) filter that is frequently used in sunscreen cosmetics. An effective overlapping of the PL spectrum of ensulizole and the absorption spectrum of QDs with 2.5 M MAA is achieved. A formidable decrease in the PL intensity and the PL lifetime of ensulizole promotes an efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from sunscreen ensulizole to the QDs. The magnitude of the FRET efficiency (E) is ∼70%. This very high value of E is the signature of the existence of a very fast energy transfer process from ensulizole to the MAA functionalized ZnCdS QDs. The dyad system consisting of ZnCdS QDs and ensulizole sunscreen can serve as a prototype model to develop a better understanding of the photochemistry of ensulizole and consequently the formulation of more efficient sunscreen cosmetics.

Deaths from colorectal cancer (CRC) are still rising, and various links to etiology have been proposed. However, a direct link between microbial dysbiosis and colorectal cancer has not been postulated. This study aimed to identify the role of microbes in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer. This systematic review was based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A systematic search was done considering papers published over the past 12 years, using PubMed, PubMed Central, Cochrane, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect databases. Studies were selected based on the following predefined eligibility criteria: English-language systematic reviews, meta-analysis, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and clinical trials, which included papers on microbes playing roles in colorectal cancer with the derived data transferred to a template. Following this, quality assessment was done using each study's relevant assessment tool. The initial search generated 128 studies. From the study, we found the ratio of Fusobacterium, when compared between healthy and colorectal cancer patients' guts, was the highest, although it was not the most predominant gut organism. Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF), Clostridium and Salmonella, and Peptostreptococcus showed links with colorectal cancer and described pathways that could explain its implication in colorectal cancer. However, overt conclusions cannot be drawn because further research needs to be conducted.

Methotrexate (MTX), an antifolate agent, is recommended as the first-line disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD). In this systematic review, our goals were to assess liver fibrosis in methotrexate-treated patients, evaluate liver fibrosis in relation to treatment duration and cumulative dose, and identify differences based on the underlying disease. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to perform the systematic review. We thoroughly searched PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), and Cochrane library databases to identify relevant articles based on predefined selection criteria. Studies were selected based on the following predefined eligibility criteria: English language, papers from the last 20 years, systematic reviews, observational studies, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and clinical trials, which included papers on MTX playing roles in the development of liver fibrosis with the derived data transferred to a template. Following that, quality was assessed using the appropriate assessment tool for each study. The initial search yielded 512 results. Following a thorough review, 10 studies were chosen for final consideration: eight observational studies and two systematic reviews. Liver enzyme (LE) elevations during MTX therapy are a common but transient problem. Serial abnormal LE tests may be associated with liver pathology, but fibrosis development is uncommon. However, it is unclear from the literature how therapy should be adjusted in the case of elevated LE and to what extent MTX is linked to liver toxicity; definitive conclusions cannot be drawn because more research is needed.

Stroke is one of the most common causes of disability in the world. It has sensory, motor, and cognitive symptoms. Many cognitive domains might get involved in a stroke. This systematic review focuses on working memory domain deficits after stroke and their various rehabilitation methods. This review is based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses(PRISMA) guidelines. For this review, we have searched PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science Direct databases and screened thoroughly with the inclusion criteria of free full-text English papers in the last 10 years that have exclusively studied humans. The articles included in the search are randomized control trials (RCTs), observational studies, meta-analysis studies, systematic reviews, and traditional reviews. Consequent quality assessment was done using the most commonly used tools for each type of study and eight papers were selected. From these papers, full-text articles were studied, analyzed, and tabulated. We found five different rehabilitation methods: transcranial direct-current stimulation, computer-assisted cognitive rehabilitation, physical activity, goal setting, and multimodal rehabilitation. We found that goal setting, computer-assisted cognitive rehabilitation, and multimodal rehabilitation can improve working memory deficits. While transcranial direct current stimulation and physical activity were inconsistent, further studies are needed. The small sample size, no follow-up, the inclusion of only a few studies, the size of the stroke, and comorbid conditions like mild cognitive impairment, dementia, and depression were the main limitations of this study. Future reviews must include a larger number of studies with large sample sizes, including follow-up as an inclusion criterion. We need more clinical trials on these methods for better knowledge.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) primarily affects the immune systems, which, if progressed, will lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Currently, there is no effective cure for the disease, and patients are affected lifelong, but there are antiretroviral medications that can control the disease's symptoms and progression. In addition, taking precautions during sexual contact, especially in the male homosexual population, while handling the patient's bodily fluids such as blood and saliva, and during childbirth by an infected mother is necessary to prevent the transmission of the virus. We used 15 studies, including systematic reviews and meta-analyses, observation studies, randomized clinical trials, and comprehensive reviews, to determine how HIV interferes with heart disease, increasing morbidity and mortality. We have used specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, focusing on specified age groups within a particular timeline. Some of the included studies found that many side effects from antiretroviral drugs can impact heart conditions, along with HIV, while others did not show a strong correlation between HIV and some heart diseases. In conclusion, after reviewing the literature, the results are inconclusive. More extensive trials focusing on the impact HIV has on heart disease are required to establish a strong correlation between HIV and heart disease to prevent morbidity and mortality.

Regorafenib, a multi-kinase inhibitor, has been widely used to treat patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) who failed the initial treatment with imatinib and sunitinib. This systematic review aims to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of regorafenib for patients with metastatic and/or unresectable GIST. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to perform this systematic review. We searched PubMed, Science Direct, and Cochrane databases to identify relevant articles based on predefined selection criteria. The implication of the search strategy results in 776 records from all databases. We excluded conference abstracts, discussion articles, case reports, case series, systematic reviews, and other observational non-intervention studies from the study, along with the articles published in languages other than English. After the screening and quality assessment, 10 studies were selected for final review - two randomized controlled trials and eight non-randomized prospective and retrospective review articles of intervention. Regorafenib improved the survival rates of patients after the failure of imatinib and sunitinib treatment, with an acceptable safety profile. Close monitoring of the patients may be needed to detect and manage the grade 4 or higher adverse events.

Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconducting nanocrystals that exhibit size- and composition-dependent optical and electronic properties. Recently, Cu-based II-VI ternary Cu x Cd1-x S (CCS) QDs have emerged as a promising class of QDs as compared to their binary counterparts (CuS and CdS). Herein, a series of ternary CCS QDs are synthesized by changing the molar concentration of Cu2+ ions only keeping the 1:1 ratio of the stoichiometric mixture of Cd2+ and S2-. These CCS QDs are attached to 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA), an eminent UV-B filter widely used in many commercial sunscreen products to avoid skin erythema and DNA mutagenic photolesions. The photoinduced Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is investigated from PBSA to CCS QDs as a function of Cu concentration in CCS QDs using the steady-state photoluminescence and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. A 2-fold increase in the magnitude of non-radiative energy transfer rate (K T(r)) is observed as the molar concentration of Cu in CCS QDs increases from 2 to 10 mM. Our findings suggest that in PBSA-CCS QD dyads, the FRET occurrence from PBSA to QDs is dictated by the dynamic mode of photoluminescence (PL) quenching. The bimolecular PL quenching rate constants (k q) estimated by Stern-Volmer's plots for PBSA-CCS QD dyads are of the order of 1010 M-1 s-1, which signifies that in the PBSA-CCS QD dyad FRET system, the process of PL quenching is entirely diffusion-controlled.

With the increasing prevalence of obesity, the worldwide risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has also increased. Abdominal obesity increases intragastric pressure, disturbing the integrity of the gastroesophageal junction, thus facilitating reflux. Other than obesity, some lifestyle factors also cause GERD, including smoking, consumption of alcohol and caffeine, late-night meals, and high fat intake. This review study aimed to assess the impact of weight loss and lifestyle modifications on GERD. In this systematic review, the databases used were PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), Science Direct, and Google Scholar. Boolean system and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) strategy were used to form suitable keywords. Patients from the pediatric and geriatric populations were excluded from the study and quality assessment was done using different assessment tools. A positive association between obesity and GERD was found. It was also found that the long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) causes complications, so lifestyle interventions should be used more than PPIs for treating GERD, especially in obese patients. We concluded that weight loss could lead to the resolution of gastroesophageal reflux disease, and therefore, conservative measures, including dietary modifications such as reducing the consumption of alcohol, caffeine, and chocolate, behavioral changes such as smoking cessation and elevation of the head of the bed, and weight loss, should be used as first-line management for GERD. Although awareness has increased regarding the adverse effects of proton pump inhibitors, future studies are required to assess these negative effects.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are one of the most common, highly heritable neurodevelopmental diseases affecting 1-2% of children under the age of 3. Although studies have implicated genetic predispositions, environmental risk factors, and maternal depression as the pathophysiology of ASD, it remains unclear. The association between antidepressant (AD) usage during pregnancy and the likelihood of ASD in children is still debatable. We carried out a systematic review to determine the relation of ASD with AD in offspring exposed to ADs in utero. We used the following terms of medical subject heading (MeSH) and keywords separately and in combination: "antidepressants," "maternal/pregnancy depression," "autism spectrum disorders/autism," and "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI)." Our data search was conducted on PubMed, PubMed Central, Google Scholar, and Cochrane, which resulted in 28,141 articles. We identified and eliminated duplicates and then screened 9,965 articles by title and abstract. We then applied eligibility criteria over 143 relevant articles; a quality assessment was performed, and finally we included 18 selected studies. Mothers who had taken ADs during pregnancy for at least two medication prescription cycles and children detected to have ASD from two years to 18 years of age were included. We excluded articles in languages other than English, grey literature, case reports, letters to the editor, books, documents, animal studies, and studies published before 2017. Out of 18 studies, 17 evaluated ASD as the primary outcome, and for one study, the outcome was child behavioral as well as neurodevelopmental changes. Other additional outcomes studied were attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), preterm birth, spontaneous abortion, small for gestational age, maternal mental illness, and persistent pulmonary hypertension. After adjusting for confounding factors, in six studies, the higher correlations between ASD and ADs were eliminated. Also, paternal AD use, maternal pre-conceptional AD drug use, and maternal depression itself are additional factors that raise the incidence of ASD.

Diabetes mellitus and depression are chronic debilitating disorders and can occur comorbidly. They are thought to be linked not only through environmental and behavioral factors but through molecular mechanisms as well. Antidepressant medication and psychological therapy, standard treatments for depressive symptoms in Type 2 diabetes mellitus, are linked to high rates of treatment failure and non-adherence; therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms linking diabetes and depression could lead to discovering new targets and developing novel therapeutics. Metformin is considered a first-line anti-diabetic medication for Type 2 diabetes mellitus, and several studies have discussed its antidepressant effect. Metformin is thought to promote neurogenesis, enhance spatial memory function and protect the brain against oxidative imbalance. This systematic review aims to compile information on metformin's effect on depression symptoms and assess current knowledge on the relationship between depression and diabetes. After reviewing several studies, we concluded that metformin might help treat comorbid depression in diabetic patients, but before it can be recommended as a depression medication, more extensive and better-designed trials are needed.

Externally variable magnetic field was incorporated with the combination of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to enhance the emission characteristics of aluminum (Al) plasma. Significant emission enhancement of laser induced plasma (LIP) was obtained at different magnetic field strengths, for instance, enhancement factors of about 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4 times were observed at field-strength of 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 T, respectively. The electron-impact excitation rates and recombination process were increased at higher field-strengths, which led to the higher emission signal due the stronger plasma confinement by the field. The electron number density and electron temperature were measured using the spectroscopic techniques at several delay times. At higher field strengths, both electron density and electron excitation temperature showed an increased trend as compared to the case when No-field was applied. Hence, the research has significance for enhancing the plasma signal which led to improve the LIBS sensitivity.

Applying sunscreen on human skin provides photoprotection against the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation of the sun. Sunscreen absorbs UV radiations and dissipates the absorbed energy through various radiative and nonradiative pathways. The attachment of functionalized quantum dots (QDs) to the sunscreen component is a novel idea to enhance the absorption cross-section of UV radiations. Therefore, the attachment of the sunscreen component to the ligand functionalized biocompatible QDs and the absorbed energy transfer from sunscreen to the QDs could work as a model system to overall improve the efficiency of the sunscreen. This study elucidates the mechanism of size-dependent Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency and its rate between 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA) and mercaptoacetic acid (MAA) functionalized CdS QDs. In the PBSA-QDs dyad, the PBSA (donor) dissipates UV-absorbed energy to the CdS QDs (acceptor). Following excitation at 306 nm, the steady-state photoluminescence (SSPL) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) techniques measurements demonstrate that both the nonradiative energy transfer efficiency and rate are QDs size-dependent in addition to donor-acceptor distance, and suggest that bigger sized-QDs result in an increase of the FRET efficiency.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: District Sheikhupura encountered its first dengue outbreak in 2014 but lacked serological evidence and reports of risk factors associated with it. To assess this, a hospital-based study was conducted from January 2014 to December 2017. METHODOLOGY: Blood from 333 participants was collected, the serum obtained was tested for IgG and IgM antibodies against DENV using a commercially available ELISA kit. RESULTS: The results showed that out of all (n= 333) samples tested, 120 were turned up positive for DENV, making an overall prevalence of 36%. Of the 120 confirmed cases, 55% (n = 66) were recorded in 2014, 10% (n = 12) in 2015, 27.5% (n = 33) in 2016, and 7.5% (n = 9) in 2017. It was found that 68.3% (n = 82) were male and 31.7% (n = 38) were female, with 61% (n = 74) patients aged between 11-30 years. The highest prevalence of infection, 94.2% (n = 113), was noted after the rainy season. During the study, the highest number of cases appeared in Ferozewala Tehsil. The factors age, gender, and season were found statistically significant with the prevalence of infection (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The study is the first report on the detection of dengue in the Sheikhupura district. The survey anticipated its geographical expansion, determined associated risk factors, and suggests active disease surveillance in the area.

ABSTRACT

Employing natural or artificial sunscreens is essential to protect the skin from ultraviolet radiations that cause premature aging and develop melanoma and other forms of skin cancer. The 2-Phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid, commonly known as ensulizole is a water-soluble artificial sunscreen that absorb UV-B (280 nm - 315 nm) radiations and protects the skin against the harmful effects of these radiations. We have measured steady-state photoluminescence (SSPL) spectra and photoluminescence (PL) kinetics of this compound in various conditions. Steady-state absorption indicates a strong absorption feature at 303 nm and a weak one at 316 nm that have been identified as π → π* and n → π* transitions, respectively. The spectra of PL induced by these absorptions indicate that the PL of ensulizole is less Stokes-shifted in polar solvents and more Stokes-shifted in non-polar solvents. The average PL lifetime of ensulizole is longer in non-polar solvents than in polar solvents and it exhibits the shortest PL lifetime in aqueous medium that maximize its transition efficiency in water. This suggests in non-polar solvents intersystem crossing is the dominant mode of relaxation of the excited ππ* state. Furthermore, an increase of pH of ensulizole solution decreases the PL intensity and the lifetime. Stern-Volmer equation is employed to evaluate bimolecular quenching rate constant kq. The evaluation result suggests the diffusional dynamic mode of PL quenching is operative.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of dengue IgG and IgM antibodies was investigated in 689 patients with suspected dengue. Of the 689 suspected cases, 373 (54.1%) were found to be positive for dengue antibodies, IgM being dominant. There was a significant relationship between incidence of dengue fever and season: all cases were reported during the rainy season, especially the post-monsoon season (89.5%), with none during the dry season. More male (79.3%) than female individuals were positive cases and the incidence was highest in the 21-49 year age group (63%). This is the first seroprevalence study reported from Multan, Pakistan.
