ABSTRACT

AIM: The objective of this study was to describe and characterize the postmortem and histopathological findings of putative esophageal chondrosarcoma associated with Spirocerca lupi. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Spirocerca-associated esophageal nodules were collected from 54 dogs at postmortem examination and were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Of the cases examined, 15 were selected randomly for further investigation, of which 11 were classified as non-neoplastic nodules while 4 had changes reflecting a neoplastic process. RESULTS: In all four neoplastic cases, the wall of the esophageal nodules contained islands and nests of highly proliferative atypical chondroblasts within a cartilaginous matrix. However, there was no statistically significant association between gender (p=0.228), age (p=0.568), and breeds (p>0.05) with the occurrence of spirocercosis. Moreover, all esophageal nodules identified were located near the caudal segment, and their diameters ranged from 1 to 6 cm (4.7±1.5 cm). A number of worms in each nodule varied from 5 to 25 (11.3±5). CONCLUSION: Histopathology and cytology revealed that the wall of the esophageal nodules contained islands and nests of highly proliferative atypical chondroblasts within a cartilaginous matrix, a rare finding, and clinical challenge in spirocercosis.

ABSTRACT

Goat farming plays an important role in the Sri Lankan rural economy. Sri Lankan indigenous (SLI) goats and their crossbreds are reared mainly under extensive management and indiscriminately exposed to pathogens and parasites. This study was designed to evaluate resistance to haemonchosis in SLI goats and their Jamnapari crossbreds (JCB) in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. Twenty SLI and 20 JCB 4-month-old male goats were artificially challenged with 5000 H. contortus L3 larvae. Faecal egg counts (FEC), body weights, FAffa MAlan CHArt (FAMACHA®) scores, packed cell volumes (PCV), red blood cell counts, total and differential white blood cell counts, blood haemoglobin contents, serum total protein and albumin contents, and serum pepsinogen and antibody levels were determined at 0, 21, 28, 35 and 42days after challenge. Effects of measurement time were significant for all variables (P<0.05). Breed effects approached significance (P=0.06) and measurement time×breed interaction was significant (P<0.05) for FEC. Peak FEC occurred at day 35 in both goat types, and JCB goats had higher FEC than SLI goats at days 28 (P<0.001), 35 (P<0.10), and 42 (P<0.10). Means for FEC at day 35 were 1783±446 eggs per gram of feces (epg) for SLI kids and 3329±850 epg for JCB kids. Haematological parameters, serum chemistry, and FAMACHA scores suggested that SLI goats were recovering from parasitic infection by day 42, whereas JCB goats had increasing severity of anaemia. Means for PCV in SLI goats decreased from 26.8±0.7% at day 0 to 19.7±0.9% at day 35 and thereafter increased to 20.2±0.9% at day 42. Means for PCV in JCB goats declined from 25.9±0.6% at day 0 to 17.2±0.9% at day 42. Eosinophilia was observed in both genotypes. The JCB goats were heavier than SLI goats and had higher antibody titres, reflecting higher levels of parasitism. Both goat types significantly increased in body weight during the experiment and therefore tolerated parasite infection without severe production losses. We concluded that SLI goats were more resistant to haemonchosis than JCB goats, but that JCB goats were somewhat resilient to parasitic infection. Substantial variability in measurements associated with parasite infection in both breeds indicated potential to improve parasite resistance. Phenotypic information should be coupled with genomic information to identify appropriate breeding goals for future selection programs.

ABSTRACT

Changes in the 4-hydroxy-2-hexenal (HHE) and malonaldehyde (MA) contents were investigated in the meat of the yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiate containing 0, 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9 M NaCl stored at 0 degrees C for 7 days. After 7 days of storage, the HHE content was significantly lower and the MA content significantly higher in the meat containing NaCl than in the control without NaCl.

ABSTRACT

Pork and beef containing NaCl were stored at 0 °C and changes in 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE) content were analyzed after 0, 3, 7 and 10 days. As an index of the lipid peroxidation level, malonaldehyde (MA) content was also analyzed. In pork, HNE content in samples with 2% NaCl increased (P<0.05) after 7 and 10 days of storage. In beef, HNE content in all samples increased during storage. The HNE content in samples with NaCl was higher than those of the control, after 7 and 10 days of storage, although the difference was not always significant. Judging from MA content, NaCl may act as a pro-oxidant in pork and beef. HNE may accumulate in pork and beef in which lipid peroxidation is progress.

ABSTRACT

The protein extractability of sodium chloride (NaCl), potassium chloride (KCl) and lithium chloride (LiCl) under a range of molarity with in the physiological pH range (pH 6.0-8.0) was assessed to determine the best protein extractant for pork lean meat. The individual proteins in the extracts were identified by electrophoresis. The highest protein extractabilities at pH 7.0 for NaCl, KCl and LiCl were observed at 1.2, 1.1, and 1.1 M, respectively. There was no significant difference in protein extractability for KCl and LiCl within physiological pH range. NaCl had a significant increase of its protein extractability as pH increased from 6.0 to 6.5 followed by a relatively constant extractability. The NaCl had the highest protein extractability followed by LiCl and KCl. The maximum number of proteins (26 bands) was found at the optimum concentration of each salt. However, resolution and clarity of bands were better in NaCl extracts. The pH variation does not affect the number and the intensity of the bands.

ABSTRACT

The contents of 4-Hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE), cytotoxic aldehyde, in smoked meat products (ham, bacon and sausage) were analyzed. All the samples analyzed contained HNE, although large differences in the contents between the different samples were observed. In one lot of ham (H1) and wiener sausage (WS1) a high level in HNE was observed. The changes of HNE contents of pork meats containing 0, 0.1, 0.5 and 1% Sugi wood vinegar (SWV) stored at 0 °C were also analyzed for 7 days. As an index of lipid peroxidation level, malonaldehyde (MA) contents were also analyzed in these samples. After 7 days of storage, HNE was detected only in pork meats containing 1% SWV and the level was similar to those of H1 and WS1. Judging from MA contents, SWV may act as a pro-oxidant in pork meats and HNE may accumulate in pork in which lipid peroxidation is in progress.
