ABSTRACT

Advances in ligand development have allowed for the fine-tuning of gold catalysis. To contribute to this field, we designed an indazole phosphine ligand scaffold that allows facile introduction of cationic charge through methylation. With minimal changes to the structure upon methylation, we could assess the importance of the electronic effects of the insertion of a positive charge on the catalytic activity of the resulting gold(I) complex. Using the benchmark reactions of propargyl amide cyclization and enyne cyclization with and without hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP), we observed marked differences in the catalytic activities of the neutral and cationic gold species.

ABSTRACT

Amino acid derivative Schiff base was synthesized by reaction of leucine with salicyldehyde in basic medium. The Schiff base was used as a ligand which was reacted with Co, Mn, Cu and Cd metals in order to form the stable complexes. The synthesized ligand and metals complexes were characterized by using different spectroscopic tools i.e. FT-IR, Mass spectrometry and NMR. The percentages of different elements present in ligand molecule and complexes was confirmed by Elemental analyzer. All compounds including ligand and complexes were also engaged with different bacterial (Escheria coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subbtilis) and fungal strains (Alternaria alternate, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus niger) in order to check the inhibitory action of titled compounds. The results showed that the metal complexes have greater antimicrobial activities than ligand.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To find bullying victimisation as a predictor of physical and psychological health problems among school-going children with hearing impairment. METHODS: The co-relational cross-sectional study was conducted in Gujrat district of Pakistan's Punjab province from August 2014 to January 2015, and comprised adolescents with hearing impairment. The subjects were selected through multi-stage stratified proportionate sampling from the local schools. Two standardised instruments were administered to assess the relationship between bullying and health problems. Multidimensional Peer Victimisation Scale was used for measuring bullying behaviour, while the Health Questionnaire was used to assess physical and psychological health problems. Both scales were translated into Urdu using lexicon equivalence method of translation. RESULTS: Of the 286 subjects, 183(64%) were boys. A significant positive relationship was found between the four components of bullying and health problems (p<0.05 each). Boys experienced more physical victimisation than girls (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference between girls and boys in social manipulation (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Children with hearing impairment experienced bullying just like those without such an impairment. Bullying needs to be considered a significant public health issue and should be dealt with effectively.
