ABSTRACT

This study examined the experiences and perceived benefits of support group participation among HIV-infected women in South Africa. From a qualitative analysis of responses, key psychological processes through which support groups are potentially beneficial were identified. These processes included: identification; modeling; acceptance; and empowerment. The participants' consequent life changes were explored in order to associate these processes with the positive outcomes of support group participation. Through understanding the relationship between the psychological processes within a support group setting and the potential benefits, and by targeting these processes in the development and implementation of future support group interventions, a framework is provided for achieving positive outcomes associated with support group participation.

ABSTRACT

Some of the fundamental problems in covalent attachment of peptides and proteins to putative biosensor surfaces are reviewed and specific approaches to these problems discussed. In addition, selected aspects of our recent work utilizing self-assembled monolayer (SAM) systems designed to react selectively with the thiol side chain of Cys in proteins are presented. Uniform attachment of a 21-amino acid peptide antigen through a single Cys residue with retention of biological function (antibody binding) has been attained. Further work with this system may lead to solutions for some of the problems which currently prevent the development of reliable biosensors for industrial and medical use.

ABSTRACT

The presence of endotoxin was examined in seven sheep with experimentally induced heartwater. Elevations in endotoxin levels were recorded in one sampling in three of the seven sheep during the acute stage of the disease. The elevations in endotoxin levels were of short duration and decreased in the 24-h follow-up samples. There was no elevation of leukotrienes (B4, C4 and D4) in the blood, or the thoracic or pericardial fluid of any of the sheep.
