ABSTRACT

Data on morphological alterations in experimental melanoma B-16 induced by conjugate of polyvinylpyrrolidone and metal-organic complex of copper and melfalon are presented. The antitumor effect of the synthetic conjugate, which inhibits melanoma-16 growth, is adequately tolerated by bone marrow cells. Conjugate accumulation among the dividing cells inhibits the proliferatrive capability of malignant cells and causes other specific morphological changes to occur. It was found that polyvinylpyrrolidone conjugate can be used as a carrier whenever there is a problem of making certain drugs soluble and, thus, more marketable.

ABSTRACT

The paper discusses the results of treatment of 280 patients with inoperable esophageal cancer which included local hyperthermia, radiotherapy, hyperglycemia and chemotherapy. 122 patients receiving radiotherapy alone served as controls. The complete remission rate obtained with local hyperthermia and radiotherapy was 2.5 times that observed for radiotherapy alone. Hospital lethality was 1.4% in the study group and 2.4% in controls whereas 5-year survival rates were 13.1% and 0, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Immediate results of complex treatment were studied in 185 patients with stage IIIa, b (T1-2N2M0 and T3N0-2M0) nodular breast cancer. Preoperative chemoradiation treatment incorporated microwave procedure. All patients had been radically mastectomized after Patey. The analysis included assessment of response and degree of treatment-induced pathomorphosis, versus age, menstrual function, site and histologic structure of tumor. Microwave procedure proved an effective component of complex treatment of stage IIIa, b breast cancer. Good results were obtained in patients aged 51-60 suffering adenocarcinoma.

ABSTRACT

The authors presented an analysis of immediate and short-term results of therapy of 115 patients on thermoradio- and chemotherapy for recurrent head and neck tumors. Triple irradiation at single focal doses of 10 Gy at one-week intervals between fractions were employed taking into account radioresistance of recurrent tumors. After each session of irradiation the patients received polychemotherapy (cyclophosphamide, vinblastine, methotrexate) for 2 days. Local MWF-hyperthermia was provided before a session of irradiation and during drug administration. Complete or partial tumor regression was noted in 94% of the patients with the resultant improvement in their general status. The 3-year disease-free interval was noted in 41% of the patients. Radiation changes were restricted to atrophy of the skin and mucous membranes and stable disorders of salivation.

ABSTRACT

The bioelectrical activity of the cerebral cortex, cardiovascular system status, cell-mediated immunity and peripheral blood parameters were studied in 208 cases of head and neck cancer who received local pneumo- and ultra-high frequency hyperthermia in combination with chemoradiation treatment. Local hyperthermia was found to produce no untoward side-effects.

ABSTRACT

The authors report the results of clinical elaboration and testing of the technic of intraesophageal intratumor sarcolysin iontophoresis associated with radiotherapy in 40 inoperable patients with cancer of the thoracic esophagus. A total focal dose of irradiation was on the average 1/3 less compared with the routine one. Iontophoresis was performed by a specially designed electrode with 5-10 mA during 60 minutes. The iontophoresis procedure was followed by irradiation. The immediate good results of the treatment were twice as frequent as in control groups. The treatment proceeded with less pronounced radiation response. An average survival of patients while using chemical drugs intophoresis proved to be equal to control data that is likely to be due to the far-advanced stage of the disease in most patients. An average survival in patients with less tumor proliferation was found to be longer than in analogous control series.

ABSTRACT

The authors present an analysis of the results of the treatment in 78 inoperable patients with cancer of the thoracic esophagus with the use of local hyperthermia, pyrogenotherapy, associated with tumor irradiation. Different schedules of tumor hyperthermia and its irradiation were employed. To heat the tumor a device, designed by the authors, with a contact heat transmission was used. Pyrogenal, prodigiozan were used for pyrogenotherapy. A total focal dosage of radiation was lessened compared with the control group on the average by 1/3. Good immediate results were obtained thrice as frequent as in control patients receiving only radiation therapy. After the conducted complex therapy including local hyperthermia 15% of patients survive over 3 years, while in the control group--0%.
