ABSTRACT

Candida albicans is a common commensal fungus and fourth most frequent causative agent of nosocomial infections including life-threatening invasive candidiasis in humans. The effectiveness of present antifungal therapies using azoles, polyenes, flucytosine and echinocandins has plateaued in managing fungal infections. The limitations of these drugs are related to polymorphic morphology, biofilm formation, emergence of drug-resistant strains and production of several virulence factors. Development of new antifungal agents, which can particularly targeting multiple cellular targets and limiting evolving resistant strains are needed. Recently, metal nanoparticles have emerged as a source of new antifungal agents for antifungal formulations. Furthermore, green nanotechnology deals with the use of biosynthetic routes that offer new avenue for synthesizing antifungal nanoparticles coupled with less toxic chemical inventory and environmental sustainability. This article reviews the recent developments on C. albicans pathogenesis, biofilm formation, drug resistance, mode of action of antifungal drugs and antifungal activities of metal nanoparticles. The antifungal efficacy and mode of action of metal nanoparticles are described in the context of prospective therapeutic applications.

ABSTRACT

Heavy infestation by Perna viridis has been observed in the sub-seabed seawater intake tunnel and CWS of a tropical coastal power station in-spite of continuous low dose chlorination regime (0.2 ± 0.1 mg L-1) (CLDC), indicating periodical settlement and growth. Continuous arrival of mussels (colonized in the sub seabed tunnel intake section) at the pump house indicated that the mussels were able to tolerate and survive in a chlorinated environment, for varying time periods and were dislodged when they become weak and subsequent death, leading to flushing out of the system. In the present study, effect of continuous chlorination [0.2 mg L-1 (in-plant use); 0.5 mg L-1 (shock dose) & 1.0 mg L-1 (high levels)] was evaluated on mussels to assess; (a) time taken for mortality, (b) action of chlorine on physiological, genetic, metabolic and neuronal processes. 100% mortality of mussels was observed after 15 (0.2 mg L-1); 9 (0.5 mg L-1) and 6 days (1.0 mg L-1) respectively. Extended valve closure due to chlorination resulted in stress, impairing the respiratory and feeding behavior leading to deterioration in mussel health. Pseudofaeces excretion reduced to 68% (0.2 mg L-1); 10% (0.5 mg L-1) and 89% (1.0 mg L-1) compared to controls. Genotoxicity was observed with increase in % tail DNA fraction in all treatments such as 86% (0.2 mg L-1); 76% (0.5 mg L-1) and 85% (1.0 mg L-1). Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) stress biomarkers increased drastically/peaked within the first 3 days of continuous chlorination with subsequent quenching by antioxidant enzymes. Gill produced highest generation of ROS; 38% (0.2 mg L-1); 97% (0.5 mg L-1); 98% (1.0 mg L-1). Additionally, it was shown that 84% (0.2 mg L-1), 72% (0.5 mg L-1), and 80.4% (1.0 mg L-1) of the neurotransmitter acetylcholinesterase activity was inhibited by chlorine at the nerve synapse. The cumulative impact of ROS generation, neuronal toxicity, and disrupted functions weakens the overall health of green mussels resulting in mortality.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) has shown an increasing prevalence leading to a considerable medical and social burden. Nasal congestion is the cardinal symptom of AR, and the upper respiratory tract is most affected by this long-lasting ailment. Intranasal corticosteroids alleviate nasal congestion, along with other symptoms of AR, but their effect is not evident immediately. Oxymetazoline has a rapid onset of action, but its use should be limited to 3-5 days. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the fixed-dose combination nasal spray containing fluticasone furoate and oxymetazoline hydrochloride (FF + OXY) 27.5/50 mcg once daily in patients with AR in a real-world clinical setting. METHODS: The study was a prospective, open-label, single-arm, multicenter, real-world observational study conducted in patients with AR for a period of 28 days. Patients (n = 388) with a diagnosis of AR were treated with a combination of FF + OXY nasal spray. Total nasal symptom score (TNSS), total ocular symptom score (TOSS) and total symptom score (TSS) were documented at baseline and at the end of study period. The overall effectiveness of treatment with FF + OXY was rated by the investigators as very good/good/satisfactory/poor (4-point Likert scale) for each patient. RESULTS: Treatment with FF + OXY resulted in significant reduction in the TNSS, TOSS and TSS, from 7.18 ± 3.38 at baseline to 0.20 ± 0.84 (p < 0.001), from 2.34 ± 2.29 at baseline to 0.09 ± 0.53 (p < 0.001), from 9.51 ± 4.94 at baseline to 0.29 ± 1.32 (p < 0.001) at 28 days respectively. With respect to effectiveness, the investigators reported very good effectiveness in 52.12% of patients. No serious adverse events were reported. CONCLUSION: The fixed-dose combination of once-daily fluticasone furoate and oxymetazoline hydrochloride nasal spray 27.5/50 mcg was effective in relieving the nasal congestion and reduction of TNSS, TOSS and TSS in patients suffering from AR. The combination was safe and well tolerated with no rebound congestion throughout the treatment period.

ABSTRACT

Naturally derived essential oils (EOs) from Ocimum basilicum (OB) and Ocimum gratissimum (OG) were incorporated in polylactic acid (PLA) matrix with concentration of 2.5 % and 5 % respectively by solvent casting method, with an aim to develop insecticidal polymer pouches (insect proof polymer pouches). The major components following GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of EOs as estragole (69.998 %) in OB and thymol (29.843 %) in OG. The developed films with EOs showed remarkable insecticidal activity with 100 % and 80 % mortality rate for OB and OG respectively at 2.5 % concentration against rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae). While, both OB and OG EOs observed 100 % mortality against pulse beetle (Callosobruchus chinensis) after 96 h exposure in presence of grain conditions and the insecticidal efficacy was equivalent to the commercial hermetic bags (CSB). The physical property of film showed increase in the film thickness in EO-PLA films whereas the mechanical properties of EO-PLA films matrix have increased the polymer flexibility with decreasing tensile strength (TS) and Youngs modulus (EM) as TS OB 5 %, OG 5 % - 15.64 MPa, 17.66 MPa respectively. While, water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) was reduced to 0.015 g/m2.hr, optical characteristics showed slight significant change in colour and FTIR spectra exhibited a change in -OH stretching compared to blank PLA matrix. The surface morphology of the blank and EO embedded PLA films visualized by SEM depicted a complete homogenization of essential oils in the PLA matrix.

ABSTRACT

Thermal-discharges from power plants highly disturb the biological communities of the receiving water body and understanding their influence is critical, given the relevance to global warming. We employed 16 S rRNA gene sequencing to examine the response of two dominant marine bacterial lifestyles (planktonic and biofilm) against elevated seawater temperature (+5 â„ƒ). Obtained results demonstrated that warming prompted high heterogeneity in diversity and composition of planktonic and biofilm microbiota, albeit both communities responded contrastingly. Alpha diversity revealed that temperature exhibited positive effect on biofilm microbiota and negative effect on planktonic microbiota. The community composition of planktonic microbiota shifted significantly in warming area, with decreased abundances of Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, and Actinobacteria. Contrastingly, these bacterial groups exhibited opposite trend in biofilm microbiota. Co-occurrence networks of biofilm microbiota displayed higher node diversity and co-presence in warming area. The study concludes that with increasing ocean warming, marine biofilms and biofouling management strategies will be more challenging.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) of cervical spine is rare in the pediatric age groups. It brings along a gamut of problems in management such as growth disturbances, instability, deformities, and neurological deficiencies. We report a case that was successfully managed by intralesional injection, making it safe and reproducible. Case Report: A 12-year-old girl presented with pain and swelling around the nape of neck that increased in size over 1 year. Imaging and biopsy were suggestive of ABC. She was managed with selective embolization and percutaneous injection of methylprednisolone and calcitonin. Injections were given twice over 2 months period. At 1½ year follow-up, the patient was asymptomatic and swelling had shrunk in size and lesions ossified. Conclusion: ABC'S are rare lesions that can create therapeutic dilemma in the pediatric population. Intralesional injection of calcitonin and methylprednisolone can prove to be a safer and efficacious treatment modality.

ABSTRACT

Orbital complications of rhino-sinusitis was one of the most common extracranial complications in the pre-antibiotic era. However, the incidence of intra-orbital complications secondary to rhinosinusitis has significantly decreased in recent times with the advertent usage of broad-spectrum antibiotics. The subperiosteal abscess is one of the most common intraorbital complications of acute rhinosinusitis. This is a case report of a 14-year-old girl who presented with diminished vision and ophthalmoplegia which on evaluation was diagnosed to be a case of a subperiosteal abscess. The patient was treated by endoscopic sinus surgery and with complete post-operative recovery to normal vision and ocular movements. This report aims at describing the presentation and management of the condition.

Background: In patients undergoing surgical procedures, preoperative period is one of the most worrying periods. There are only few studies which revealed that increased preoperative anxiety is associated with increased requirements of doses of anesthetic agents. Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of preoperative anxiety in patients posted for surgical procedures and its relation to the doses of anesthetic drugs. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional, analytical study done between January 2021 and April 2021. A total of 100 patients undergoing surgery have given consent to participate in the study by filling self-designed questionnaire, Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS). Data analysis was done by SPSS version 24 using appropriate statistical tests. Results: Preoperative anxiety was noted in 21% of the patients who were undergoing surgery. The association between preoperative anxiety and need for increase in the doses of anesthetic agents during intraoperative period was found to be statistically significant (P < 0.004). Conclusion: A significant number of patients required increased amounts of anesthetic drugs to reduce anxiety during intraoperative period. Therefore, appropriate methods have to be introduced to address the concerns of patients undergoing surgery and thereby reducing anxiety.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Based on an increased prevalence of diabetes, asthma and hypertension among women in reproductive age, understanding the risk factors of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is crucial to inform policy and program interventions to address the problem. In this study, we empirically assessed the associations of behavioural factors such as alcohol consumption and tobacco use and a variety of socioeconomic characteristics with prevalence of NCDs in adult women. METHODS: The data were derived from the National Family Health Survey conducted in 2015-16. The effective sample size for the present paper was 699,686 women aged 15-49 years in India. Descriptive statistics along with bivariate analysis were conducted to find the preliminary results. Additionally, multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to find the relationship between NCDs and behavioural factors such as alcohol consumption and tobacco use. Moreover, population attributable risk was estimated in the present study. RESULTS: It was revealed that 15.9% of women had any of the NCDs. A proportion of 0.8% of women smoked tobacco whereas 5.5% of women consumed smokeless tobacco. Also, a proportion of 1.2% of women consumed alcohol in the current study. The odds of having NCDs among women who smoked tobacco, consumed smokeless tobacco and consume alcohol were 16, 8 and 20% significantly higher than the odds of having NCDs among women who did not smoke tobacco, consume smokeless tobacco and consume alcohol respectively. The population attributable risk of having NCDs was 1.8% (p < 0.001) for women who smoked, 0.8% (p < 0.001) for women who consumed smokeless tobacco and 2.2% (p < 0.001) for women who consumed alcohol. Besides, the odds of having NCDs among overweight and obese women were 2.25 and 3.60 times greater than the odds of having NCDs among women who were underweight. CONCLUSION: The findings revealed that smoking and using smokeless tobacco and alcohol consumption were risk factors of NCDs in women. The findings also alarm the focus of maternal and child health programs on NCDs' risk factors like maternal obesity, due to their adverse health consequences on their children too. Also, the coexistence of higher levels of tobacco use and alcohol consumption requires different strategies to address the vulnerability of women towards NCDs, including screening and early detection of NCDs especially among those who smoke or chew tobacco and consume alcohol.

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to determine the overall parental satisfaction with retro-transfers from a level 3 to a level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The secondary objectives were to explore factors that caused parental satisfaction associated with retro-transfer and investigate the factors that could be modified to improve the retro-transfer process. METHODS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study. Questionnaires were mailed to all parents of infants transferred from level 3 to level 2 NICUs from 2016 to 2017. Independent samples t-tests, Spearman's rank correlations, and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with parental retro-transfer satisfaction. RESULTS: Our response rate was 39.1% (n = 140). Of all parents, 64.29% parents were extremely satisfied with the overall retro-transfer process. In our bivariate analyses, multiple factors were found to be strongly associated with parental retro-transfer satisfaction, including parental level of education, the amount of notice and rationale given for the retro-transfer and the level of parental communication and engagement with their infant's healthcare team before and after transfer. Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that when questions regarding the retro-transfer were answered and the level 2 NICU team demonstrated a concrete understanding of the infant's medical issues and history, parental satisfaction increased. CONCLUSION: Majority of parents were satisfied with the retro-transfer process. However, close collaboration and ongoing and open lines of communication between parents and the level 3 NICU healthcare teams will increase parental retro-transfer satisfaction rates.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The incidence and risk factors for metachronous upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) following radical cystectomy (RC) remain incompletely defined, which has limited the ability to individualize postoperative surveillance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of 2 institutional registries was performed to identify patients undergoing RC for urothelial carcinoma. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models for metachronous post-RC UTUC were developed in one institutional data set and validated in the second institutional data set. A post-RC UTUC risk score was then developed from these models. RESULTS: A total of 3,170 RC patients were included from the training cohort and 959 RC patients from the validation cohort. At a median followup after RC of 4.6 years (IQR 2.1-8.7), 167 patients were diagnosed with UTUC. On multivariable analysis in the training cohort, risk factors for metachronous UTUC were the presence of positive urothelial margin (HR 2.60, p <0.01), history of bacillus Calmette-Guérin treatment prior to RC (HR 2.20, p <0.01), carcinoma in situ at RC (HR 2.01, p <0.01) and pre-RC hydronephrosis (HR 1.48, p=0.04). These factors had similar discriminative capacity in the training and validation cohorts (C-statistic 0.71 and 0.73, respectively). A UTUC risk score was developed with these variables which stratified patients into low (0 points), intermediate (1-3 points), and high risk (4+ points) for post-RC UTUC, with respective 5-year UTUC-free survivals of 99%, 96%, 89% in the training cohort and 98%, 96%, and 91% in the validation cohort. CONCLUSIONS: We developed and validated a risk score for post-RC UTUC that may optimize UTUC surveillance protocols after RC.

ABSTRACT

We investigate electrokinetic transport of power-law fluids in a narrow cylindrical capillary in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. The governing equations including the full Poisson-Boltzmann equation and the Cauchy momentum equation with power-law constitutive behavior are solved numerically, without being restrictive to low surface potential limits. The influence of the power-law index, wall zeta potential, relative strength of electromagnetic force over viscous force (as represented by the Hartmann number), and the lateral electric field strength on the variation of the volumetric flow rate is analyzed. Our results reveal a significant augmentation in the net-throughput beyond the traditionally explored low surface-charge limits, especially for shear-thinning fluids, defying the established notions. These fundamental theoretical premises may act as essential precursors towards developing deeper insights on fluidic transport bio-nanopores under electro-magneto- hydrodynamic influences.

ABSTRACT

Mass lesions of the larynx are one of the most common clinical entity which we come across in routine otorhinolaryngology and head neck practice with varied symptomatology. Among all the mass lesions of the larynx, Epithelial neoplasms constitute up to 97%. Mesenchymal tumours of the larynx constitute only 0.3-1.0% of all the laryngeal tumors. Abundance of cartilage structures in the larynx made it a spot for mesenchymal tumors [chondromas and chandrosacrcomas]. The spectrum of mesenchymal neoplasms can vary from chondromas, chondroblastoma to chondrosarcoma. Here we want to share our experience of a mesenchymal tumour of the larynx. This case is reported for the rarity and ambiguity in diagnosis. Though these are slow-growing tumours with an early presentation, in our case, the patient had a supportive tracheostomy without definitive treatment for more than 2 years. We managed this patient by excising the mass by lateral pharyngotomy with the preservation of larynx followed by successful Decannulation in 20 days.

ABSTRACT

Acquired Tracheo-esophageal fistula (TEF) is a challenging and complicated condition. The laryngeal protection is lost in acquired TEF cases due to the established connection between the esophagus and the airways leading to aspiration, pneumonia, and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Malignancy contributes to about 80% of acquired TEF. Nonmalignant causes for TEF include prolonged ventilation, trauma (iatrogenic, penetrating, or blunt injury), foreign bodies, corrosive burns, and granulomatous infections. With the advancements in critical care, the incidence of TEF post-ventilation is on the rise in recent decades. We would like to share our experience managing ten cases of nonmalignant acquired cervical TEF by the lateral cervical approach at our institute. Apart from the isolated TEF cases, one patient with concomitant tracheal stenosis was repaired simultaneously with good postoperative results. TEF was identified in two cases following removal of T-tube and solid stent respectively and was repaired successfully with lateral cervical approach with strap muscle flap interposition.

BACKGROUND: The present study aims to estimate the prevalence and correlates of multimorbidity among women aged 15-49 years in India. Additionally, the population attributable risk for multi-morbidity in reference to those women who smoke tobacco, chew tobacco, and consume alcohol is estimated. METHODS: The data was derived from the National Family Health Survey which was conducted in 2015-16. The effective sample size for the present paper 699,686 women aged 15-49 years in India. Descriptive statistics along with bivariate analysis were used to do the preliminary analysis. Additionally, binary logistic regression analysis was used to fulfil the objectives. RESULTS: About 1.6% of women had multimorbidity in India. The prevalence of multimorbidity was high among women from southern region of India. Women who smoke tobacco, chew tobacco and consume alcohol had 87% [AOR: 1.87CI: 1.65, 2.10], 18% [AOR: 1.18; CI: 1.10, 1.26] and 18% [AOR: 1.18; CI: 1.04, 1.33] significantly higher likelihood to suffer from multi-morbidity than their counterparts respectively. Population Attributable Risk for women who smoke tobacco was 1.2% (p<0.001), chew tobacco was 0.2% (p<0.001) and it was 0.2% (p<0.001) among women who consumed alcohol. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate the important role of lifestyle and behavioural factors such as smoking and chewing tobacco and consuming alcohol in the prevalence of multimorbidity among adult Indian women. The subgroups identified as at increased risk in the present study can be targeted while making policies and health decisions and appropriate comorbidity management can be implemented.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increases vulnerability to externalising disorders such as substance misuse. The study aims to determine the prevalence of ACEs and its association with substance misuse. METHODS: Data from the Consortium on Vulnerability to Externalising Disorders and Addictions (cVEDA) in India was used (n = 9010). ACEs were evaluated using the World Health Organisation (WHO) Adverse Childhood Experiences International Questionnaire whilst substance misuse was assessed using the WHO Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test. A random-effects, two-stage individual patient data meta-analysis explained the associations between ACEs and substance misuse with adjustments for confounders such as sex and family structure. RESULTS: 1 in 2 participants reported child maltreatment ACEs and family level ACEs. Except for sexual abuse, males report more of every individual childhood adversity and are more likely to report misusing substances compared with females (87.3% vs. 12.7%). In adolescents, family level ACEs (adj OR 4.2, 95% CI 1.5-11.7) and collective level ACEs (adj OR 6.6, 95% CI 1.4-31.1) show associations with substance misuse whilst in young adults, child level ACEs such as maltreatment show similar strong associations (adj OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.1-3.5). CONCLUSION: ACEs such as abuse and domestic violence are strongly associated with substance misuse, most commonly tobacco, in adolescent and young adult males in India. The results suggest enhancing current ACE resilience programmes and 'trauma-informed' approaches to tackling longer-term impact of ACEs in India. ABSTRACT

Bacterial communities colonized on submerged substrata are recognized as a key factor in the formation of complex biofouling phenomenon in the marine environment. Despite massive maritime activities and a large industrial sector in the nearshore of the Laccadive Sea, studies describing pioneer bacterial colonizers and community succession during the early-stage biofilm are scarce. We investigated the biofilm-forming bacterial community succession on three substrata viz. stainless steel, high-density polyethylene, and titanium over 15 days of immersion in the seawater intake area of a power plant, located in the southern coastal region of India. The bacterial community composition of biofilms and peripheral seawater were analyzed by Illumina MiSeq sequenced 16S rRNA gene amplicons. The obtained metataxonomic results indicated a profound influence of temporal succession over substrate type on the early-stage biofilm-forming microbiota. Bacterial communities showed vivid temporal dynamics that involved variations in abundant bacterial groups. The proportion of dominant phyla viz. Proteobacteria decreased over biofilm succession days, while Bacteroidetes increased, suggesting their role as initial and late colonizers, respectively. A rapid fluctuation in the proportion of two bacterial orders viz. Alteromonadales and Vibrionales were observed throughout the successional stages. LEfSe analysis identified specific bacterial groups at all stages of biofilm development, whereas no substrata type-specific groups were observed. Furthermore, the results of PCoA and UPGMA hierarchical clustering demonstrated that the biofilm-forming community varied considerably from the planktonic community. Phylum Proteobacteria preponderated the biofilm-forming community, while the Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, and Actinobacteria dominated the planktonic community. Overall, our results refute the common assumption that substrate material has a decisive impact on biofilm formation; rather, it portrayed that the temporal succession overshadowed the influence of the substrate material. Our findings provide a scientific understanding of the factors shaping initial biofilm development in the marine environment and will help in designing efficient site-specific anti-biofouling strategies.

ABSTRACT

Marine biogrowth infestation of a seawater intake system was investigated. A digital camera fixed onto a skid was used to record the biogrowth at intervals of 5 m up to a depth of 55 m. Divers inspected the intake shaft and collected the biogrowth samples for biomass estimation. A biomass density of 7.5 kg m-2 and 28.2 kg m-2 was recorded at 5 and 30 m depths respectively. Inspection by the divers revealed that hard-shelled organisms such as oysters and brown and green mussels were observed in plenty up to a thickness of 15 cm and bryozoans grew as epibionts. At lower depths (<40 m), hydroids grew on the shells of green mussels along with silt accumulation. The biofouling community was composed of 46 organisms, exhibiting variation in distribution and abundance. The study explains the extent and type of marine biogrowth phenomena with depth and describes biofouling preventive methods.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/08927014.2021.1933457 .

ABSTRACT

Perna viridis Linnaeus (1758) is a major foulant in the cooling water systems of electric power stations located on the East coast of India. Though chlorination is considered an effective fouling control measure, the strategy may fail in the case of bivalve mussels, due to the ability of the mussels to close their shells and still survive for extended periods of time. In a given power station, continuous low dose (exomotive) chlorination (0.2 ± 0.1 mg l-1) is practiced to control biofouling. Laboratory experiments were carried out to assess the mortality and valve movement response of Perna viridis exposed to chlorine, using a Mosselmonitor®. All size groups tested showed progressive reduction in valve opening upon chlorination. However, continuous dosing of chlorine concentration as high as 1.0 mg l-1 was required for sustained and complete valve closure response in this mussel. At lower concentration (0.7 mg l-1), the mussels were able to open their shells and feed. Sustained valve closure resulted in physiological stress to the mussels due to reduced feeding, subsequently leading to death. Time to 100% mortality was dependent on the size of the mussels. At 1.0 mg l-1 chlorine residual, smaller size group (30-50 mm) mussels showed 100% mortality in 79.3 h, while larger groups (50-70 mm and 70-90 mm) took 152 h and 243 h, respectively. Frequency of valve opening was high in smaller size group mussels (30-50 mm), compared with larger groups (70-90 mm). Even though the time taken for killing was size-dependent, frequency of valve opening and time period between successive openings were found to be characteristic of individual mussels. The observations provide new insight into the response of bivalve mussels to continuous chlorination in the context of biofouling control and point to the need to adopt pragmatic strategies to prevent mussel spat settlement rather than killing of adult mussels, thereby reducing environmental burden due to chlorine residuals. Usage of target-specific biocidal strategies (intermittent/pulse dosing) or alternative biocides (chlorine dioxide) may help mitigate green mussel fouling in tropical cooling water systems.

In the situation of radiation triage, accidental exposure to uranium, or uranium contamination in food or water; haematopoietic decline or bone marrow sickness is observed in the aftermath followed by other systemic effects. Most studies done previously have been on cytogenetic analysis in blood lymphocytes of uranium miners wherein causal relationship was difficult to be established. This study provides new insights into the minimum risk level of uranium to human lymphocytes, DNA damage induced and alterations in the cell cycle progression through 96-h acute toxicity study. Cytotoxicity studies by MTT assay and flow cytometry showed that uranyl nitrate concentration of 1280 µM lead to 50% cell death, 640 µM caused 25% death, 250 µM caused 10% cell death and 5 µM was the NOAEL. Uranium caused DNA damages in a dose dependent manner as evident from comet and CBMN assays. A marked increase in G2/M phase cells was observed in the test culture groups. Halting of cell cycle at G2/M checkpoint also signified the extent of double strand breaks and genetic instability with increasing uranium dose in this study. Better cell cycle responses and lower genetic damage index observed in lower dosage of exposure, suggests adaptability and repair responses in human lymphocytes. Together these results advance our understanding of uranium effects on mammalian cells.
