ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: A hydrocele is typically a non-cancerous condition that arises from the accumulation of fluid between the layers of the vaginal process. Diagnosis primarily involves a physical examination. In instances where the condition is mistaken for other pathological conditions, additional investigations may be undertaken. Surgical intervention is typically deferred until after the age of one year, unless the hydrocele is significantly large. CASE PRESENTATION: A case was presented of a 4-year-old boy who was referred to the hospital with a suspected deep inguinal hernia. Upon examination, it was determined that the mass was actually an encysted hydrocele of spermatic cord. The patient underwent a minimally invasive surgery to remove the spermatocele, and the procedure was successful. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: This emphasizes the importance of obtaining a detailed patient history and conducting a comprehensive physical examination, which often provide sufficient information to make a diagnosis. In many instances, these initial steps can spare patients from undergoing additional tests that may be invasive or pose unnecessary risks. CONCLUSION: It is important to note that in cases of hydroceles, conservative treatment, such as observation, is the primary approach before the age of one year. Surgery is typically reserved for older children or those with large hydroceles.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the perception of trained dental professionals and laypersons toward the esthetic impact of variations in the vertical position, width, and gingival height of the maxillary lateral incisor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study analyzed the perspective of smile photographs by dental professionals such as "fifty orthodontics and fifty general dental practitioners (GDPs)" as well as fifty laypersons, consisting of an equal number of male and female participants. Photographs edited to depict alteration of golden proportion, incisal length, and gingival height of lateral incisor. SPSS software was used to analyze the data and determine the significant difference within all the participants, at 0.05% level (95% confidence interval). RESULTS: There was no significant difference in ranking between the genders. Golden proportion of 62%-67% were ranked the highest by orthodontists, whereas GDPs and laypersons preferred 67%. Regarding gingival display, corrected height of -0.5 and -1 mm received highest ranking from all the three groups. In case of lateral incisal length, -0.5 mm was ranked highest by laypersons, in contrast to -1 mm by orthodontists and GDPs. CONCLUSION: Specific differences were observed in the ranking of smile esthetics by health-care professionals and laypersons. Golden proportion of 62% and 67% were ranked the highest by orthodontists, whereas GDPs and laypersons preferred 67%. Corrected gingival height of -0.5 and -1 mm received highest ranking from all the three groups. ABSTRACT

In this paper, we investigate the effects of gamma (γ) radiation on the spectral and mplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties of two conjugated polymers (CPs) viz., poly [2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH⁻PPV) (CPM) and poly{[2-[2',5'-bis(2″-ethylhexyloxy)phenyl]-1,4-phenylenevinylene]-co-[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene]} (BEHP-co-MEH⁻PPV) (BMP) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). Gamma irradiation strongly affected the photophysical properties of these CPs. To explore these changes, gamma radiation, in the range of 2⁻50 kGy, was used to maintain the temperature at 5 °C constant for all doses at a dose rate of 12.67 kGy/h, using a 60Co gamma ray. The ASE profiles of the CPs in THF were obtained under the high power excitation of a Nd:YAG laser (355 nm), pre- and post-radiation. The result revealed a dramatic blue shift of the fluorescence and the ASE spectra after gamma irradiation. This shift in the luminescence and ASE spectra could be a response to the conformational disorders such as gamma irradiation-induced polymer crosslinking, which was verified using Raman spectra, FTIR, and swelling experiments. This could be the first report on the effect of gamma radiation on the ASE properties of conjugated polymers.

ABSTRACT

Hydatid disease of bone is rare. It remains asymptomatic over a long period. It is usually detected after a pathological fracture or secondary infection or following the onset of compressive myelopathy in cases of vertebral lesions. Secondary infection of hydatid disease of bone could be difficult to treat. The authors present a case of chronic osteomyelitis of the proximal aspect of the left femur in a 37-year-old male patient secondary to hydatid disease of bone. It was treated by aggressive debridement, gentamycin beads, and bone graft to fill the defect. No recurrence of the hydatid lesion or infection was detected after 2 years. This case showed that in addition to aggressive debridement, gentamycin beads may be valuable in eradicating the infection in such a case.
