ABSTRACT

Forty-three patients with duodenal ulcer were treated with almagel and gastrocepin, had four meals a day. Twenty-one patients received the drugs according to the standard schedule before meals. The test group of 22 patients took meals and drugs in turn during 24 hours with the aim of a continuous moderate reduction of acidity and activity of proteolytic enzymes. Statistical analysis of the results showed a shorter duration of the ulcer healing in the test group. This conclusion permits recommending the above novel modification of the standard treatment for use in duodenal ulcer treatment as advantageous.

ABSTRACT

Patients with duodenal ulcers were examined for the degree and duration of the effect of almagel, gastrocepin and food on pH and protein digestion by various enzymes of the contents of the stomach and initial part of the duodenum. Acidity and protein digestion were determined in vitro with 3 values of the substrate pH. It was established that almagel and food efficiently reduced the acidity and protein digestion in the stomach and duodenum. Gastrocepin decreased those indicators to a lesser degree but throughout a longer period of time. The data obtained can be used for optimizing the treatment of patients suffering from duodenal ulcers.

ABSTRACT

The data obtained during aspiration and intragastric pHmetry were studied and compared. Criteria of evaluating acid formation in the stomach were developed according to the intragastric pHmetry data. Examination of healthy subjects and patients with gastrointestinal diseases permitted one to distinguish the main types of secretion. It was demonstrated that intragastric pHmetry is not inferior, in the diagnostic aspect, to a classical aspiration study, while in a number of situations, it compares very favourably with this method of examination.
