ABSTRACT

Benign ectopic thyroid tissue within the parotid salivary gland is very rare. A 32-year-old woman presented with a slowly-growing, painless mass in the parotid region. The mass, which was clinically diagnosed as a parotid tumour, was found at surgery to be cystic in nature. Histological examination showed thyroid tissue with secondary changes in the cyst wall and colloid in the lumen. On iodine isotope scan, the thyroid gland was found in its normal location. The possible origin of the ectopic thyroid tissue in the parotid salivary gland could be due to a common evolution of the thyroid and parotid glands, a heteroplasia or a metaplasia.

ABSTRACT

The density and distribution of mast cells was assessed in skin biopsies of 118 untreated leprosy cases and 20 healthy individuals taken as controls. Mast cells were present in only small numbers in the skin biopsies of healthy individuals. Significantly higher mast cell counts were obtained in the skin lesions of indeterminate leprosy (P < 0.01). The mast cell count in the tuberculoid group was significantly lower than that in the lepromatous group (P < 0.05). The lepromatous group also showed increased mast cell degranulation and altered morphology. The mast cell distribution in the skin biopsies of the two groups was, however, similar. The mast cell count in leprosy is probably determined by the pattern of cytokines released by the T lymphocytes. However, the influence of mast cells on the outcome of the disease needs to be evaluated further.

ABSTRACT

The histopathology of the antral mucosa of patients with acid peptic disease was studied in relation to Helicobacter pylori infection. Three hundred and fifty-five patients underwent gastroscopy and biopsy on 443 occasions. During each gastroscopy, two antral samples were taken for Rapid Urease Test (RUT) for H. pylori and two antral samples for histopathology. Haematoxylin and Eosin and modified Giemsa stained sections were studied. Histopathological changes in the antrum and the density of H. pylori were graded according to the Sydney System criteria. There was a significant association between the RUT and histology results for detection of H. pylori. The overall prevalence of H. pylori was 61.4% with a maximum incidence in the third and fourth decades of life, and an equal sex distribution. H. pylori colonisation was seen in 90.7% of patients with duodenal ulcer, 66.7% with gastric ulcer and 44.3% with non-ulcer dyspepsia. H. pylori colonisation was associated with more severe antral chronic active gastritis, lymphoid follicles, intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia. Elimination of H. pylori by treatment with anti-H. pylori regimens resulted in regression of the changes.

ABSTRACT

A total of 24 cases of metastatic bone tumours were encountered over the last 6 years. Majority of these lesions (70.8%) were found in the 4th to 6th decades of life with a slight male preponderance. The axial skeleton was involved in majority of the cases (62.5%), the spine being the commonest site of tumour metastasis. A large proportion of the metastatic bone tumours were adenocarcinomas (62.5%) and the lung was the commonest primary site followed by the breast and large intestine. In 41.7% of the patients the bone metastasis was the initial manifestation of the malignant disease which was subsequently detected after investigations. In 20.8% of the cases the primary tumour remained undetected even after through investigations.

ABSTRACT

Gastric teratoma is an extremely rare tumour. We report a gastric teratoma in a four month old male infant who presented with a large abdominal mass. There is no evidence of recurrence 1 1/2 years after the tumour was excised. Our case is an addition to the few cases reported in the World literature.

ABSTRACT

We report an unusual case of a 23 year old female who presented with symptoms of spinal cord compression by an extradural metastasis from a gestational choriocarcinoma. She gave the history of evacuation of a hydatidiform mole five months prior to presentation, following which she had been totally asymptomatic and had not attended any follow-up. She responded to conventional chemotherapy.
