ABSTRACT

Background: The present study aimed at providing comprehensive epidemiological data about the prevalence of psychological and emotional problems in a representative sample of Iranian children and evaluates the major and common determinants of parents and family environment of these problems. Materials and Methods: The epidemiology of emotional and psychological problems in Iranian children is a cross-sectional study was conducted on 786 families and their 800 children during 2019-2021 in Isfahan, Iran. Personality traits, psychological health, marital satisfaction, individual's perceptions of his/her family and quality of life of parents were evaluated using Iranian-validated questionnaires. Various aspects of emotional, general, psychological, and sleep health as well as physical activity levels and nutritional habits of children also have been assessed using Iranian validated instruments. Data on sociodemographic characteristics representing parents and family status also have been collected. Results: The mean age of parents and children was 39.5 ± 5.5 and 10.20 ± 1.90 (years), respectively. The mean duration of marriage was 16.1 ± 5.1 years and majority of parents his or her wife were at bachelor degree while parents with other degrees of education were sufficiently available in our study. The participated children were nearly equally distributed in terms of gender. A large portion (81.9%) of questionnaires about children was filled by mothers. Majority of children (62.2%) were first birth order. Conclusion: The current study provides comprehensive data about various psychological, emotional, and educational problems of Iranian children and new insights about family environment and parental interrelationship as key risk factors for the aforementioned problems in which may have implications for both clinical and preventive psychological health to improve individual educational and treatment efficacy and problem-solving in problematic children.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: We aimed at assessing the parenting stress levels among mothers of children with different disabilities and its association with various mothers' psychological characteristics. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 302 mothers of 6-12years old children suffering from sensory motor mental, chronic physical and psychological disabilities were enrolled. Parenting stress, coping stratyles, marital satisfaction and psychological problems of mothers were assessed using validated questionnaires. RESULTS: In this study, mothers of 302 children with sensory-motor mental (n=64), psychological (n=149) and chronic physical (n=89) disabilities were investigated. Mean total score of parenting stress was significantly higher in mothers of children with psychological disabilities (F=4.285, P<0.05). There was positive significant relationship between emotion oriented coping style and parenting stress scores (ß=0.56, P<0.05). Parenting stress had significant negative association with marital satisfaction (ß=-0.3, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicated different parenting stress levels among mothers of children with different disabilities. Mother's psychological characteristics such as marital satisfaction, psychological problems and coping styles are significant determinants of parenting stress. These findings provide baseline information for designing future interventional studies and developing more effective approaches for managing the parenting stress.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with developmental problems are always bearing a load of stress. The aim of this study is to compare the stress in mothers of children with different disabilities to each other, considering their demographic background. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in Isfahan, Iran during 2012 on 285 mothers of 6-12 years old children with chronic physical disease, psychological disorder, and sensory-motor and mental problems. Abedin's parenting stress questionnaire was used and obtained data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance or covariance as appropriate. RESULTS: Mothers of children with sensory-motor mental and chronic physical problems experience more stress than mothers of children with psychological disorders (P < 0.05). The stress score of mothers of children with psychological disorders was lower than the other two groups. Also there was a significant difference between the score of mothers of children with chronic physical problems and mothers of children with psychological disorders regarding parent-child dysfunctional interaction (P < 0.01). A significant difference was observed in terms of stress among mothers of children with sensory-motor mental problems with different number of children (P < 0.05); also mothers of children with chronic physical problems in different levels of education have experienced different levels of parenting stress (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Due to high level of parenting stress among our studied samples, special education and early intervention are needed for parents in our study population in order to deepening their diagnostic knowledge and professional consultation on stress management.
