ABSTRACT

A 22-year-old patient with 9 months of amenorrhea and a huge abdominal swelling was admitted to our institution with an ultrasonography report of a multiloculated cystic space-occupying lesion, almost taking up the whole abdomen (probably of ovarian origin), along with a single live intrauterine fetus. She delivered vaginally a boy baby within 4 hours of admission without any maternal complication, but the baby had features of intrauterine growth restriction along with low birth weight. On the 8(th) postpartum day, the multiloculated cystic mass, which arose from the right ovary and weighed about 11 kg, was removed via laparotomy. A mucinous cystadenoma with no malignant cells in peritoneal washing was detected in histopathology examination. This report describes a rare case of a successful vaginal delivery despite a huge cystadenoma of the right ovary complicating the pregnancy.

ABSTRACT

[reaction: see text] Norbornene undergoes Ni-catalyzed (1-2 mol% allylnickel bromide/phosphine/NaBARF or AgSbF(6), 1 bar ethylene, -50 degrees C) hydrovinylation (>97% yield), giving either a 1:1 or a 2:1 (norbornene/ethylene) adduct depending on the size of the phosphine. Use of binaphthol-derived phosphoramidite ligand results in up to 80% ee for the 1:1 adduct. The course of the reaction is highly dependent on the ligand (size and configuration of the appendages) and the counteranion present.

ABSTRACT

Through a systematic examination of ligand and counterion effects, new protocols for a nearly quantitative and highly selective codimerization of ethylene and various functionalized vinylarenes have been discovered. In a typical reaction, 4-bromostyrene and ethylene undergo codimerization in the presence of 0.0035 equiv each of [(allyl)NiBr]2, triphenylphosphine, and AgOTf in CH2Cl2 at -56 degrees C to give 3-(4-bromophenyl)-1-butene in >98% yield and selectivity. Corresponding reactions with [(allyl)PdX]2 are much less efficient and less selective and may require further optimization before a viable system can be identified. Another useful protocol that gives comparable yield and selectivity involves the use of a single-component catalyst prepared from allyl 2-diphenylphosphinobenzoate, Ni(COD)2, and (C6F5)3B. Recognition of a synergistic relationship between a chiral hemilabile ligand (for example, (R)-2-methoxy-2'-diphenylphosphino-1,1'-binaphthyl, MOP) and a highly dissociated counteranion (BARF or SbF6) in an enantioselective version of the Ni-catalyzed reaction raises the prospects of developing a practical route for the synthesis of 3-arylbutenes. Several pharmaceutically relevant compounds, including widely used 2-arylpropionic acids, can be synthesized from these key intermediates. This reaction appears to be quite general. Synthesis of several new 2-diphenylphosphino-1,1-binaphthyl derivatives, prepared to probe the effect of hemilabile coordination on the efficiency and selectivity of the reaction, are also described.

ABSTRACT

[reaction: see text] Asymmetric reductive ring opening of oxa- and azabenzonorbornadienes with organic acids and zinc powder under mild conditions catalyzed by Ni(binap)Cl(2) or Pd(binap)I(2) produces the corresponding 1,2-dihydronaphth-1-ols in good to excellent yields with high enantioselectivity.

ABSTRACT

Nickel-catalyzed ring-opening reactions of 7-heteroatom norbornadienes and norbornenes with various organic halides to give products with multiple stereocenters are described. Treatment of 7-oxabenzonorbornadiene (1a) and 7-carbomethoxy-7-azabenzonorbornadiene (1b) with aryl iodides (ArI) in the presence of NiCl(2)(PPh(3))(2) and Zn powder gave the corresponding ring-opening addition products cis-1,2-dihydro-2-aryl-1-naphthol (2a-m) and methyl N-[cis-1,2-dihydro-2-aryl-1-naphthyl]carbamate (3a-e) completely stereoselectively in 40-99% yields. The nickel system also catalyzes the reaction of highly substituted oxabicyclic [2.2.1] compounds (1c-e) with organic halides (PhI, PhCH(2)Br, PhCHCHBr, and PhCBrCH(2)) to give the corresponding ring-opening products (4a-d, 5, 6a,b) that consist of four fixed stereocenters. Studies on the effect of solvent on the reaction of 1a with PhI show that CH(3)CN gives the highest yield of product 2a; no product 2a is observed when toluene, dichloromethane, methanol, DMF, or DMSO is used as solvent. Addition of extra PPh(3) to the reaction mixture reduced the yield of 2a. A mechanism is proposed to account for the formation of these nickel-catalyzed ring-opening addition products.
