ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the CT findings of pancreatic lipomas in four patients. CONCLUSION: In all four cases, the lipoma was revealed incidentally on CT scans obtained for other reasons. CT scans were diagnostic, showing well-circumscribed masses within the pancreas composed almost entirely of fat, with a few scattered vessels or septa or both, which ranged in size from 1.4 x 2.0 cm to 4.5 x 5.3 cm in the axial plane. Pancreatic lipomas are rare, usually incidental tumors and, as with lipomas found elsewhere in the body, conservative management is often indicated.

ABSTRACT

Malignant melanoma of the bladder and renal vein thrombosis are rarely seen in common urologic practice. Here, an interesting case of renal vein thrombosis associated with malignant melanoma involving the bladder is presented.

ABSTRACT

Twenty-five years ago, in January 1970, Laud Humphreys' Tearoom Trade was published. It generated much controversy, yet went on to win the C. Wright Mills Award of the Society for the Study of Social Problems. Today, many remember and debate its methodology and ethical issues while often overlooking its important findings and its early contributions to the emerging field of gay studies. Humphreys' findings are reviewed and commemorated and his work is assessed in light of recent studies on sex in public places.

ABSTRACT

Inflammatory pseudosarcoma of the bladder is a rare benign entity that cannot be differentiated from malignant tumor at radiologic examination alone. Only pathologic examination can enable a definitive diagnosis. The authors report two cases of these benign tumors in patients with no history of bladder disease or trauma; the tumors were large, demonstrated invasion into local tissues, and recurred in one case after incomplete transurethral resection.

ABSTRACT

In two patients with hepatic cirrhosis and marked morphological distortion of the liver, the gallbladder was identified in a retrohepatic position on ultrasound and CT. The etiology of this anomalous position and the importance of the preoperative diagnosis of both congenital and acquired anomalous position of the gallbladder in patients with acute cholecystitis is discussed.

ABSTRACT

Renal sonographic evaluation of seven patients with mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome were performed and correlated with clinical and laboratory data either supporting or not supporting renal disease associated with this entity. Four of seven patients demonstrated significant elevations of the BUN, creatinine and/or significant proteinuria. These four patients had renal sonographic findings of increased cortical echogenicity, enlarged kidneys and enhanced corticomedullary differentiation. This complication of mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome has heretofore not been noted.

ABSTRACT

Although causal relationships between homosexuality and alcoholism have not been established, the myths and assumptions surrounding this issue are numerous. Much of the available literature on the subject is from a psychoanalytic perspective, emphasizing latent homosexuality as a cause of alcoholism. Very little is from the perspective of gay and lesbian populations. This paper analyzes the assumptions underlying the biological and genetic approaches, learning theory, psychoanalytic perspectives, and sociological models as they relate to alcoholism and homosexuality.
