ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and broncho-aspiration (BA) are known to increase the risk for chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD). However, specific lung injury mechanisms are not clearly known. The objective of the study was to describe histopathological findings in surveillance lung transbronchial biopsies that can be correlated with episodes of BA in the lung allograft. METHODS: This retrospective analysis of surveillance transbronchial biopsies was performed in lung transplant recipients, with available data of broncho-alveolar fluid (cultures and cytology), lung function parameters, and esophageal functional tests. RESULTS: Were analyzed 11 patients, divided into 3 groups: (1) GERD group: 4 patients with GERD and CLAD diagnosis; (2) control group: 2 patients without GERD or CLAD; and (3) BA group: 5 patients with foreign material in lung biopsies. A histopathological pattern of neutrophilic bronchitis (NB) was present in 4 of 4 cases in the GERD group and in 1 of 5 cases in the BA group in 2 or more biopsy samples; culture samples were all negative; the 5 NB-positive patients developed CLAD and died (3/5) or needed re-transplantation (2/5). The other 3 patients in the BA group had GERD without NB or CLAD. Both patients in the control group had transient NB in biopsies with positive cultures but remained free of CLAD. CONCLUSIONS: Surveillance transbronchial biopsies may provide useful information other than the evaluation of acute cellular rejection and can help to identify high-risk patients for allograft dysfunction related to gastro-esophageal reflux.

ABSTRACT

To study if the treatment with adenosine (ADO), an agonist of adenosine receptors, attenuates intestinal dysfunction caused by ischemia (I) and reperfusion (R), we treated rabbits with ADO (15 mg x kg(-1), intravenously) or saline solution (SS) to I (60 minutes) before occlusion of superior mesenteric artery and/or R (120 min). After I or I/R, isolated jejunal segments (2 cm) were mounted in an organ bath to study nerve-mediated contractions stimulated by electrical pulses or KCl using a digital recording system. Thin jejunal slices were stained (hematoxylin and eosin) for analysis by optical microscopy. Compared to the sham group, the jejunal contractions were similar in I + ADO, but reduced in I + SS, I/R + SS, and I/R + ADO groups. We concluded that the jejunal enteric nerves were damaged in I + SS, I/R + SS, and I/R + ADO, but not in I + ADO group. These results suggested that ADO attenuated intestinal dysfunction due to I, but not to R.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the benthic diatom composition from the estuary sediment in the Pernambuco State, based on 32 samples. Samples were collected monthly from September through December 1999 (dry period) and from April through July 2000 (rainy period) during four pre established sampling stations. Results indicated 19 families and 31 specific and infraspecific taxa. Eight new records were founded for Pernambuco State: Auliscus coelatus, Fallacia nummularia, Navicula algida, Plagiograma pulchellum, Terpsinoe americana, Triceratium antideluvianna and Tryblionella coarctata and one, Auliscus punctatus Bailey, in northeastern Brazil.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a composição das diatomáceas bênticas do sedimento estuarino do estado de Pernambuco, Brasil, com base na análise de 32 amostras. As amostragens foram realizadas mensalmente de setembro a dezembro de 1999 (período seco) e de abril a julho de 2000 (período chuvoso) em quatro estações de coleta previamente estabelecidas. As diatomáceas estiveram representadas por 19 famílias e 31 taxons específicos e infraespecíficos. Ocorreram oito novas citações para o estado de Pernambuco, quais sejam: Auliscus coelatus, Fallacia nummularia, Navicula algida, Plagiograma pulchellum, Terpsinoe americana, Triceratium antideluvianna, Tryblionella coarctata e uma, Auliscus punctatus Bailey, para a região nordeste do Brasil.
