ABSTRACT

Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is a protein involved in the transport of lipids and a component of Alzheimer's disease (AD) plaques. There are three common alleles of the apoE gene, designated epsilon 2, epsilon 3 and epsilon 4. An association between familial and sporadic AD and the epsilon 4 allele was recently reported. We have investigated Swedish Alzheimer patients and controls. The epsilon 4 allele frequency in familial and sporadic cases and in controls was 47, 22 and 18%, respectively. There was no significant difference between sporadic AD and controls but in familial cases the increased epsilon 4 allele frequency previously reported was confirmed.

ABSTRACT

In three children communities covered by a virological study enteroviruses could be isolated from 19.3% of the stool samples, 52.3% of the sewage samples and 9.7% of the samples taken from different objects and surfaces. The isolates belonged to 14 enterovirus serotypes, Coxsackie viruses being predominant. There was a good concordance between the serotypes of enteroviruses shed in the stools and those isolated from the environment. The high epidemiological potential of enteroviruses calls for a surveillance of their circulation in children communities, preferably by the virological monitoring of sewage.

ABSTRACT

The operational and technical efficiencies were evaluated, of the initial, intermittently administered chemotherapy, supervised and integrated by the general medical network. The treatment was applied in 160 patients detected in 53 rural medical districts. It was noted that under the operational aspect the treatment was applied in 100% of the eligible patients, and administration of all the necessary doses was achieved in 91,6% of the patients. Bacteriological negativation by the direct examination was obtained after three months and negative cultures were obtained in 93,3% of the patients at three months and in 97,4% of all patients after 9 and 12 months. Closure (filling) of the cavities was obtained in 75,4% of the cases after three months of treatment, and in 87,7% of all cases after 9 and 12 months. Finally the technical efficiency was completed by an assessment of the socio-professional recovery, that was achieved in 91,8% of the cases.

ABSTRACT

Two cases are presented, of hemolytic jaundice, determined by rifampicin. The first occured in a woman in whom treatment was started again after an interruption of 6 months and the second in a man undergoing intermittent treatment that had been tolerated very well for 3 months. Following the extension of the application of rifampicin in intermittent treatment might occur more frequently. Posology apparently has a major role and some precautions are to be taken.
