ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the opinions of nursing professionals on the current limitations and future potential of digital tools in healthcare. Design Qualitative and descriptive study. Location The study took place during an asynchronous MOODLE course on the use of ICT in healthcare, specifically aimed at nursing professionals. Participants The number of nurses enrolled in the course was 150. Methods A qualitative study was conducted focusing on the positive and negative aspects that telenursing can offer in the context of a Moodle training in new technologies for nurses. A thematic analysis was carried out following the method proposed by Braun and Clarke. Results In the end 68 nurses participated in the forum. Their statements, opinions and perceptions were analyzed and 28 descriptive codes were obtained and subsequently categorized into positive and negative aspects. Conclusions Nurses positively value the usefulness of digital tools and identify a wide range of benefits of telenursing in daily practice. At the same time, they point out crucial limitations that may slow down the adoption of telenursing, pointing to areas for improvement such as training and digital literacy of both patients and professionals. They consider that telenursing can humanise care, but insist on the need to prevent its use from increasing health inequalities. (AU)


Objetivo Analizar las opiniones de los profesionales de enfermería sobre las limitaciones actuales y el potencial futuro de las herramientas digitales en la atención sanitaria. Diseño Estudio cualitativo y descriptivo. Lugar El estudio se desarrolló durante un curso MOODLE asíncrono sobre el uso de las TIC en la atención sanitaria, dirigido específicamente a profesionales de enfermería. Participantes El número de enfermeras inscritas en el curso fue de 150. MétodosSe realizó un estudio cualitativo centrado en los aspectos positivos y negativos que puede ofrecer la teleenfermería en el contexto de una formación Moodle en nuevas tecnologías para enfermeras. Se realizó un análisis temático siguiendo el método propuesto por Braun y Clarke. Resultados Finalmente participaron en el foro 68 enfermeras. Se analizaron las declaraciones, las opiniones y las percepciones de las mismas, obteniéndose 28 códigos descriptivos que posteriormente se categorizaron en aspectos positivos y negativos. Conclusiones Las enfermeras valoran positivamente la utilidad de las herramientas digitales e identifican una amplia gama de beneficios de la teleenfermería en la práctica diaria. Al mismo tiempo, señalan limitaciones cruciales que pueden ralentizar la adopción de la teleenfermería, señalando áreas de mejora como la formación y la alfabetización digital tanto de pacientes como de profesionales. Consideran que la teleenfermería puede humanizar la asistencia, pero insisten en la necesidad de evitar que su uso aumente las desigualdades en salud. (AU)

Introduction: Digital literacy helps patients to be more informed in order to make decisions about their health. Patient empowerment in the digital realm is a duty for all healthcare professionals, but nurses are the most numerous professionals in all healthcare systems worldwide. In addition, they have an important role in health education and patient follow-up. Therefore, the use of digital tools, by nurses to empower and help patients know more about their health, is crucial. Objective: This study was conducted to identify nurses' views on the benefits as well as constraints nurses encounter when using digital resources to empower and educate their patients. We sought to identify enablers that could help nurses use technology with their patients as a means to reinforce the care and advice they offer them. Methods: An online ad hoc questionnaire was answered by 848 currently employed Spanish nurses on the benefits of using digital media with their patients, as well as on the constraints and enablers during implementation. Results: The majority of the nurses considered that reliable digital information would reduce unnecessary consultations. In addition, they think that at least 50% of their patients could benefit from consulting information online. Among the constraints, nurses mainly pointed out the older age and low educational level of their patients. Younger nurses are the most likely nurses to see patient age as a problem. As for enablers, nurses pointed out the training offered to patients as well as digital tools being user-friendly for patients. Conclusions: It is crucial to work while following a lifelong learning strategy, with training from university education as well as training from healthcare institutions to reduce the digital gap that affects patients' digital empowerment.

ABSTRACT

The new times, marked by immediacy, globalization, and technological advances, has forced health professionals to develop new competencies to adapt to the new challenges. However, necessary skills such as using digital tools are primarily ignored by institutions, hospitals, and universities, forcing professionals to undertake training in these areas independently. This research aims to analyse if there is a transfer of what has been learned in the digital healthcare field to their professional practice and patients. To perform the study, 104 healthcare professionals, mostly nurses, who had completed online training in digital competencies answered a questionnaire with 17 questions. These questions were related to the transfer of learning to professional practice and its use for developing patient resources. Almost 60% of the professionals said that they have used what they learned in the course in their professional work, but only 16% of the participants use it daily. The main barrier to not having applied what was learned during the course, according to participants, was the situation experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by a lack of time and lack of resources. Only 23 people out of 104 developed patient resources after the course; the most created were infographics and videos. In addition, 38 people used what they learned to improve their personal productivity: searches, storage, calendars, etc. Only 11 used it for research purposes. People between 31 and 40 years old create the most patient resources and use what they learn most frequently. There is a need to improve e-learning to provide quality training that can transfer good behaviour to professional practice in the health field.

Patient empowerment is seen as the capability to understand health information and make decisions based on it. It is a competence that can improve self-care, adherence and overall health. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the need for information and has also reduced the number of visits to health centers. Nurses have had to adapt in order to continue offering quality care in different environments such as the digital world, but this entails assessing the level of their patients' empowerment and adapting material and educational messages to new realities. The aim of this study is, on the one hand, to assess nurses' use of digital resources to provide reinforcing information to their patients and, on the other hand, to evaluate how they assess the level of empowerment of their patients. To perform the study, 850 nurses answered 21 questions related to their own digital literacy and patients' empowerment. The ability to make decisions is the characteristic most selected by nurses (70%) as useful in measuring patient empowerment, whereas 9.19% do not measure it in any way. Printed material is most often used by nurses to offer additional information to patients (71.93%), mobile applications are the least used option (21.58%), and elder nurses are those who most recommend digital resources. In this study, younger nurses make little or no use of technology as a resource for training and monitoring patients. In spite of some limitations concerning the study, digital health needs to be promoted as an indisputable tool in the nurse's briefcase in the future to ensure that older patients can manage electronic resources in different fields.

ABSTRACT

The reflective practice journal is a teaching methodology that facilitates the acquisition of professional, attitudinal values and skills, affording comprehensive training by reflecting on experiences that have been lived and showing feelings that, a priori, would be hidden. Our aim was to implement it in the international practicum in impoverished environments as a facilitating instrument of meaningful learning and the acquisition of professional skills, integrating affective and self-critical aspects. The project was developed with Nursing students at Catholic University of Valencia, in an impoverished environment. Qualitative reflections increased, highlighting humanity, closeness and attention focused on health promotion. The quality of the experience was 9.46/10. The mean score in self-criticism and expression was 4.57/5, and the self-evaluation of the acquisition of skills was 9.55/10. The double-blind peer evaluation of the performance of their practices in the international context was 9.68/10. The trust of the students with the teachers was evaluated as 10/10. The reflective practice journal facilitated the progression of learning, self-criticism, and the acquisition of values such as hospitality, the quality of care offered, and respect for customs and beliefs, as well as responsibility in the distribution of available resources and interventions.
