ABSTRACT

We reported 11 cases of crusted scabies observed during one year in our department. The mean age of the patients was 33 years with extremes at 14 and 49 years. The sex ratio was 1,2. HIV infection was the most common associated disease (45% of the patients). Ten patients had been treated with Ivermectin (200 micrograms/kg). The drug was efficient and well tolerated. For these reasons, we recommend to use Ivermectin as a drug of choice in the treatment of crusted scabies.

ABSTRACT

We performed a retrospective study during 2 years in order to determine the clinical and epidemilogic characteristics of 144 cases of scabiosis with acute glomerulo-nephritis in Dakar. The 144 cases of scabiosis complicated with glomerulo-nephritis represented 56.6% of the whole 205 cases of scabiosis observed in the same period. The most important part of the cases was observed between November and January. Usually children came from poor and numerous family. The scabios lesions were mostly generalised and the infection was recent. The main features of the kidney disease were: oedemas(93.2%), high blood pressure (89.1%) and haematuria(54.70%). Cardiac and neurological involvement were the main complications. The global mortality was very low(1 case). The evolution was good in 97% of the case with complete cure.

ABSTRACT

A food consumption survey was performed in 5 villages in the Senegal mid valley, including 55 households. In order to study the situation on a lapse of 25 years, the results of this survey were compared with those of a survey done in 1958. Nutritional value of intakes did not change: the same deficiencies are noticed. Food origin have changed, meaning a deep social transformation. Food risk is already present.

ABSTRACT

A nutritional survey performed in the Senegal mid valley in 1983 including 610 individuals shows that mild to moderate protein-energy malnutrition, specific deficiencies and anemia are still present. In addition new health hazards such as overweight and perhaps high blood pressure, raise and may burden public health welfare in that area.

ABSTRACT

PIP: This report of results obtained at the Center for Nutritional Rehabilitation and Oral Rehydration in Senegal suggests that simple techniques can be extremely effective in the treatment of diarrhea and severe malnutrition. The Center operates as a day hospital, with children and their mothers attending each day from 8 AM until 6 PM. The oral rehydration solution used has a rice flour base (30 gm) and includes 3.5 gm of sodium chloride, 2.5 gm of sodium bicarbonate, and 1.5 gm of potassium chloride. Breastfeeding is never interrupted, and nutritional rehabilitation is often begun before dehydration is completely corrected. The renutrition solution used is composed of curdled milk, oil, and sugar mixed together to form a paste that keeps for about 2 weeks. Mothers meet with the health auxiliary each day for nutrition and health education sessions. Of the 233 children completing treatment at the Center over a 9-month period, 214 had marasmus and 19 had kwashiorkor or kwashiorkor-marasmus. The average weight gain was 11.6 gm/kg/day in the former group (average duration of stay 17.3 days) and 8.0 gm/kg/day in the latter group (average duration of stay 27.0 days). The greater weight gain among children with marasmus than those with kwashiorkor reflects the edemas in the latter group. Overall, the success rate was 84% among children with a weight/age ratio under 55%. The average weight gain 1 month after discharge was 1 lg. The cost of this protocol was US25 cents/child/day. The simplicity of the infrastructure required should encorage the development of similar centers in peripheral and underserved areas.^ieng

ABSTRACT

Malnutrition-associated risk factors have been studied in Upper Volta following a multivariate statistic analysis performed with a computer (Manova). The multiple correlation coefficients for 7 predictors were 0.14 for the children and 0.34 for the women. Results show that the nutritional situation worsens when the density of the population leads to an over exploitation of the land in the North West. Two different life-styles, i.e. cattle breeding and agriculture determine strikingly different nutritional situations among women and children. Family factors are also important to the nutritional status of the children.

ABSTRACT

The nutritional status of a randomly selected sample population has been investigated in Upper Volta in 1978. The estimated mortality rate among the preschool children population (0-5 years) is as high as 39%. Up to 6% of the children 0-9 years old were found to be wasted and stunted. Older children and adults are regularly underweight although their muscular arm circumference is an average acceptable by reference to international standard. The prevalence of anemia in the whole population is round 30% and case of xerophthalmia may be observed in the country.

ABSTRACT

The results of a nutritional survey with two passages performed in July-August 1978 and March-April 1979 by ORANA in South Mali are presented: mild or moderate protein-energy malnutrition, anemia and specific deficiencies are everywhere present, but the situation deteriorates quickly from a season to the other and it is possible to characterize ecological, economic or cultural situations where nutritional status of the populations is worse than other. Among them the current economic modifications which are accompanied by nutritional modifications were emphasized as the need to consider this aspect in all development projects.

ABSTRACT

The results of food consumption surveys, epidemiological surveys (clinical and biochemical) undertaken in three sub-sahelian countries have established: - the existence of xerophthalmia in Upper Volta - a transitory vitamin A deficiency during the dry season in South Mali, without serious clinical signs - a good vitamin A status in Casamance, in South Senegal. A combined biochemical indicator which takes account of plasma carotenoids and vitamin A is recommended to assess the importance of vitamin A deficiency in a population.
