ABSTRACT

Polymer composites based on poly(N,N'-bis-4-butylphenyl-N,N'-bisphenyl)benzidine (poly-TPD) with PCBM and copper(II) pyropheophorbide derivative (Cu-PP) were developed. In thin films of the poly-TPD and Cu-PP composites, the charge carrier mobility was investigated for the first time. In the ternary poly-TPD:PCBM:Cu-PP composite, the electron and hole mobilities are the most balanced compared to binary composites and the photoconductivity is enhanced due to the sensitization by Cu-PP in blue and red spectral ranges. The new composites are promising for use in the development of photodetectors.

ABSTRACT

Using palladium-catalyzed Suzuki polycondensation, we synthesized new light-emitting fluorene copolymers containing the dicyano derivatives of stilbene and phenanthrene and characterized them by gel permeation chromatography, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, spectrofluorimetry, and cyclic voltammetry. The photoluminescence spectra of the synthesized polymers show significant energy transfer from the fluorene segments to the dicyanostilbene and 9,10-dicyanophenanthrene units, which is in agreement with the data of theoretical calculations. OLEDs based on these polymers were fabricated with an ITO/PEDOT-PSS (35 nm)/p-TPD (30 nm)/PVK (5 nm)/light emitting layer (70-75 nm)/PF-PO (20 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (80 nm) configuration. Examination of their electroluminescence revealed that copolymers of fluorene with dicyanostilbene show yellow-green luminescence, while polymers with 9,10-dicyanophenanthrene have a greenish-blue emission. The 9,10-dicyanophenanthrene units have a more rigid structure compared to dicyanostilbene and, in OLEDs based on them, an increase in maximum brightness is observed with an increase in the content of the additive to the polymer chain. In particular, the device using fluorene copolymer with 9,10-dicyanophenanthrene (2.5 mol%) exhibited a maximum brightness of 9230 cd/m2 and a maximum current efficiency of 3.33 cd/A.

ABSTRACT

A series of novel cobalt bis(dicarbollide)-curcumin conjugates were synthesized. Two conjugates were obtained through the nucleophilic ring-opening reaction of the 1,4-dioxane and tetrahydropyran derivatives of cobalt bis(dicarbollide) with the OH group of curcumin, and using two equiv. of the oxonium derivatives, two other conjugates containing two cobalt bis(dicarbollide) units per molecule were obtained. In contrast to curcumin, the conjugates obtained were found to be non-cytotoxic against both tumor and normal cell lines. The analysis of the intracellular accumulation of the conjugates by flow cytometry showed that all cobalt bis(dicarbollide)-curcumin conjugates entered HCT116 colorectal carcinoma cells in a time-dependent manner. New non-cytotoxic conjugates contain a large amount of boron atoms in the biomolecule and can potentially be used for further biological research into boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT).

ABSTRACT

A series of novel conjugates of cobalt bis(dicarbollide) and closo-dodecaborate with curcumin were synthesized by copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition. These conjugates were tested for antibacterial activity. It was shown that all derivatives are active when exposed to Bacillus cereus ATCC 10702 and are not active against Gram-negative microorganisms and Candida albicans at the maximum studied concentration of 1000 mg/L. The conjugate of alkynyl-curcumin with azide synthesized from the tetrahydropyran derivative of cobalt bis(dicarbollide) exhibited activity against Gram-positive microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 and the clinical isolate MRSA 17, that surpassed curcumin by 2-4 times.

ABSTRACT

9-HC≡CCH2Me2N-nido-7,8-C2B9H11, a previously described carboranyl terminal alkyne, was used for the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition with azido-3ß-cholesterol to form a novel zwitter-ionic conjugate of nido-carborane with cholesterol, bearing a 1,2,3-triazol fragment. The conjugate of nido-carborane with cholesterol, containing a charge-compensated group in the linker, can be used as a precursor for the preparation of liposomes for BNCT (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy). The solid-state molecular structure of a nido-carborane derivative with the 9-Me2N(CH2)2Me2N-nido-7,8-C2B9H11 terminal dimethylamino group was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

ABSTRACT

Two series of new N,S,Se-heteroacenes, namely, 6H-benzo[4',5']selenopheno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2-b]indoles and 12H-benzo[4″,5″]selenopheno[2″,3″:4',5']thieno[2',3'4,5]thieno[3,2-b]indoles, were successfully obtained using an effective strategy based on Fiesselmann thiophene and Fischer indole synthesis. The new molecules exhibit a large optical band gap (2.82 eV < E g opt < 3.23 eV) and their highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy formed by the plane π-core ranges between -5.2 and -5.6 eV, with the narrower optical band gap and lower HOMO level corresponding to selenated heteroacenes. In thin solid films of the heteroacenes, hole mobility measured using the conventional CELIV technique ranges between 10-5 and 10-4 cm2·V-1·s-1. All these make the proposed condensed-ring compounds a promising platform for the development of hole-transporting materials applicable in organic electronics.

ABSTRACT

Herein, we describe the synthesis of unsymmetrically substituted dibenzo[f,h]furazano[3,4-b]quinoxalines by intramolecular cyclization through direct transition metal-free C-H functionalization. The electrochemical and photophysical properties for several polycycles have been measured. In thin films of the dibenzo[f,h]furazano[3,4-b]quinoxalines, hole mobility is in the order of 10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1. The results show that the HOMO and LUMO energy levels are appropriate for using the compounds as hole-transport materials in thin-film devices, in particular, organic and perovskite solar cells.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of intravenous isoniazid (H) and ethambutol (E) administered in patients with new sputum positive drug-susceptible pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) with tuberculous meningoencephalitis (TM) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection in the intensive phase of treatment. METHODS: Fifty-four patients with TB/TM and HIV co-infection were enrolled for this study. Group 1 comprised of 23 patients treated with E and H intravenously, while rifampicin and pyrazinamide were prescribed orally. Group 2 consisted of 31 patients treated with the first-line anti-TB drugs orally. The concentrations of H and E in blood serum were detected using a chromatographic method. RESULTS: A significant improvement in the clinical symptoms and X-ray signs in patients treated intravenously with H and E was observed and compared to group 2. The sputum Mycobacterium tuberculosis positivity was observed during the second month of the treatment in 25.0% of patients from group 1 and 76.1% of the patients from the control group (p=0.003). In addition, nine patients (39.1%) died up to 6 months when H and E were prescribed intravenously compared with 22 (70.9%) in group 2 (p=0.023). CONCLUSION: In TB/TM with HIV, the intravenous H and E treatment was more effective than oral H and E treatment at 2 months of intensive treatment in sputum conversion as well as in clinical improvement, accompanied by significantly higher mean serum concentrations. In addition, the mortality rate was lower in intravenous H and E treatment compared to oral treatment.
