ABSTRACT

The results of the field trials of the vaccine "Act-Hib" against Haemophilus influenzae of type b, presented for registration by Pasteur Mérieux Connaught (France), are summarized. The vaccine was found to have low reactogenicity and high immunological effectiveness. A single injection of the vaccine induced the formation of the protective level of anti-PRP antibodies in 94% of the immunized children aged 1-4 years. After immunization the mean geometric titers of specific antibodies increased sixfold in comparison with the initial level and were equal to 3.4 mu/ml. On the basis of the data of laboratory control and field clinical trials the vaccine "Act-Hib" was registered in the Russian Federation and permission and its practical use in the public health service of the country was permitted.

ABSTRACT

Electron-transparent zones (vacuoles) of different size and localization have been detected in the cytoplasm of meningococci forming orange colonies. These vacuoles have been detected in cells from meningococcal cultures of different age, grown both in liquid and solid culture media. This phenomenon requires further deeper study. The presence of a relationship between newly detected vacuoles and the pathogenicity of meningococci is suggested.

ABSTRACT

The study of antigenic interrelations in the family Neisseriaceae resulted in the isolation of 2 main immunologically separated variants of protein complexes: the first variant was characteristic of nonpathogenic and pathogenic species of the genus Neisseria as well as of 7 taxonomically undefined Neisseria species (N. lactamicus, N. cuniculi, N. ellongata, N. ovis, N. animalis, N. cinerea, N. canis) and Gemella haemolysans; the second variant was represented by the genera Branhamella and Acinetobacter. N. caviae and 3 out of 14 Neisseria strains of undefined species had no common antigens with the genera Neisseria and Branhamella. The importance of the immunotyping of protein complexes for studying the problems connected with the taxonomy of the family Neisseriaceae was considered.

ABSTRACT

The comparative study of Neisseria strains, isolated from the bronchi and the pharynx of healthy persons and infectious asthma patients, was made. Nonpathogenic Neisseria isolated from bronchial asthma patients were represented by the same species as those in the pharyngeal flora of healthy persons. Only N. perflava occurred in the pharynx and the bronchi of infectious asthma patients twice as often as in healthy persons. Neisseria colonies in the R-form were shown to prevail in the cultures obtained by the inoculation of the smears taken from asthma patients.

ABSTRACT

The authors present the results of studying the microflora if the intestine and of the biliary tracts in patients with viral hepatitis; dysbacteriosis was revealed in 53% of the cases. This percentage proved to decrease with clinical recovery. Bile proved to be often contaminated with microbes -- 77% of the samples; this was particularly true in cases with cholestatic variant of the disease and in cases of moderate severity. The fact of prolonged habitation of the microorganisms in the bile system is of importance -- 68% of the patients still had microbial flora in the gall bladder and the biliary tracts by the time of discharge from the hospital.
