ABSTRACT

We report a technique to increase the data rate of a free-space all-undersea laser communication link using polarization and wavelength modulation. Measurements were made at various background light levels to estimate the required power increase as a function of bits per pulse. Transmission measurements were made of laser light through a 2-m-long tube filled with a mixture of Maalox and water to simulate ocean-water conditions for several receiver field-of-view (FOV) angles. A degree of polarization greater than 98% was measured at FOVs up to 100 mrad at an attenuation of 14 extinction lengths.

ABSTRACT

The collective effects in a periodic array of plasmonic double-antenna meta-molecules are studied. We experimentally observe that the collective behavior in this structure substantially differs from the one observed in their single-antenna counterparts. This behavior is explained using an analytical dipole model. We find that in the double-antenna case the effective dipole-dipole interaction is significantly modified and the transverse long-range interaction is suppressed, giving rise to the disappearance of Wood's anomalies. Numerical calculations also show that such suppression of long-range interaction results in an anomalous spatial dispersion of the electric-dipolar mode, making it insensitive to the angle of incidence. In contrast, the quadrupolar mode of the antenna pair experiences strong spatial dispersion. These results show that collective effects in plasmonic metamaterials are very sensitive to the design and topology of meta-molecules. Our findings envision the possibility of suppressing the spatial dispersion effects to weaken the dependence of the metamaterials' response on the incidence angle.

ABSTRACT

An indefinite permittivity medium (IPM) has been fabricated and optically characterized in mid-infrared spectral range (10.7 µm-11.3 µm). Phase and amplitude transmission measurements reveal two remarkable properties of IPMs: (i) transmission of sub-diffraction waves (as short as λ/4) can exceed those of diffraction-limited ones, and (ii) sub-diffraction waves can propagate with negative refractive index. We describe a novel double-detector optical technique relying on the interference between sub-diffraction and diffraction-limited waves for accurate measurement of the transmission amplitude and phase of the former.

ABSTRACT

Highly confined "spoof" surface plasmons (SSPs) are theoretically predicted to exist in a perforated metal film coated with a thin dielectric layer. Strong modes confinement results from the additional waveguiding by the layer. Spectral characteristics, field distribution, and lifetime of these SSPs are tunable by the holes' size and shape. SSPs exist both above and below the light line, offering two classes of applications: "perfect" far-field absorption and efficient emission into guided modes. It is experimentally shown that these plasmonlike modes can turn thin, weakly absorbing semiconductor films into perfect absorbers.

ABSTRACT

We observe critical coupling to surface phonon-polaritons in silicon carbide by attenuated total reflection of mid-IR radiation. Reflectance measurements demonstrate critical coupling by a double scan of wavelength and incidence angle. Critical coupling occurs when prism coupling loss is equal to losses in silicon carbide and the substrate, resulting in maximal electric field enhancement.
