ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Arginine (ARG)/Citrulline (CIT) deficiency is associated with increased sepsis severity after infection. Supplementation of CIT to susceptible populations with ARG/CIT deficiency such as preterm newborns with suspected infection might prevent sepsis, via maintaining immune and vascular function. METHODS: Caesarean-delivered, parenterally nourished preterm pigs were treated with CIT (1g/kg) via oral or continuous intravenous supplementation, then inoculated with live Staphylococcus epidermidis and clinically monitored for 14h. Blood, liver, and spleen samples were collected for analysis. In vitro cord blood stimulation was done to explore how CIT and ARG affect premature blood cell responses. RESULTS: After infection, oral CIT supplementation led to higher mortality, increased blood bacterial load, and systemic and hepatic inflammation. Intravenous CIT administration showed increased inflammation and bacterial burdens without significantly affecting mortality. Liver transcriptomics and data from in vitro blood stimulation indicated that CIT induces systemic immunosuppression in preterm newborns, which may impair resistance response to bacteria at the early stage of infection, subsequently causing later uncontrollable inflammation and tissue damage. CONCLUSION: The early stage of CIT supplementation exacerbates sepsis severity in infected preterm pigs, likely via inducing systemic immunosuppression.

ABSTRACT

The immature development and reproduction of the predatory mites Amblyseius largoensis (Muma), Proprioseiopsis lenis (Corpuz and Rimando), and Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were investigated using both thrips eggs and first instars of the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande, as prey in a controlled laboratory environment at 25 °C and 60% relative humidity. When provided with thrips eggs as food, A. largoensis exhibited a notably shorter immature development period for both males (7.05 days) and females (6.51 days) as compared with A. swirskii (8.05 and 7.19 days, respectively) and P. lenis (8.10 days and 7.05 days, respectively). Amblyseius largoensis also displayed a higher oviposition rate (2.19 eggs/female/day) than A. swirskii and P. lenis (1.79 and 1.78 eggs/female/day, respectively). Moreover, it exhibited the highest fecundity (25.34 eggs/female), followed by P. lenis (24.23 eggs/female) and A. swirskii (22.86 eggs/female). These variations led to A. largoensis having the highest intrinsic rate of increase (rm) at 0.209, followed by A. swirskii at 0.188, and P. lenis at 0.165. However, when the predatory mites were provided with first instars of F. occidentalis, A. swirskii demonstrated a faster immature development period for both males (7.67 days) and females (7.59 days) as compared with P. lenis (9.00 days and 7.86 days, respectively) and A. largoensis (8.47 days and 8.61 days, respectively). While the oviposition rates of P. lenis (1.92 eggs/female/day) and A. swirskii (1.90 eggs/female/day) were similar when feeding on this prey, A. largoensis produced fewer eggs (1.83 eggs/female/day). Further, A. swirskii exhibited the highest fecundity (31.93 eggs/female), followed by A. largoensis (25.71 eggs/female) and P. lenis (23 eggs/female). Consequently, the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) on thrips first instars was highest in A. swirskii (0.190), followed by A. largoensis (0.186), and P. lenis (0.176). In summary, our findings indicate that in terms of life history parameters A. largoensis performs optimally when feeding on thrips eggs, whereas A. swirskii performs best when preying on the mobile first instars of the thrips. These insights into the dietary preferences and reproductive capabilities of the studied predatory mite species have important implications for their potential use as biological control agents against F. occidentalis in agricultural settings.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: To explore the feasibility and safety of retroperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (RLPN) with selective artery clamp (SAC) in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Methods: The authors recruited three men and two women who underwent RLPN for T1 RCC between December 2022 and May 2023 at a tertiary hospital. The median age of the patients was 32 years (range, 25-70 years). The tumour size ranged from 3 to 4.5 cm. The R.E.N.A.L scores were 4x, 5p, 8a, 5a, and 8ah. The median preoperative eGFR was 96.9 (74.3-105.2). Renal computed tomography angiography was performed before the surgery to evaluate the artery branches. The operation time, number of clamped arteries, warm ischaemic time (WIT), intraoperative blood loss, RCC type, postoperative hospital stay, changes in renal function, and complications were evaluated. The follow-up duration was 6 months. Results: The median operation time was 120 (75-150) minutes. One artery was clamped in four patients, while three were clamped in one patient. The median WIT was 22 (15-30) min, and the median blood loss was 150 (100-300) ml. No complications were recorded, and the resection margin was negative in all patients. The median decrease in eGFR was 6 (4-30%). Conclusions: RLPN with SAC for T1 RCC is safe and feasible in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Pneumorrhachis (PR) is an uncommon condition characterized by the accumulation of air within the spinal canal. This finding may occur due to various causes, mostly after trauma and medical procedures. It can manifest with various features depending on the underlying cause, the location, and the extent of the air trapped. Clinically, the symptoms in affected patients can span a spectrum, ranging from being asymptomatic to manifesting as radiculopathies resulting from compression. The pneumorrhachis-related cauda equina syndrome is incredibly rare and typically appears as a large volume of air causing compression or irritation of the nerve roots in the lower spinal cord. In this report, we present a female patient whose cauda equina syndrome developed as a result of accidental extradural pneumorrhachis after epidural injection in the lumbar spine.

ABSTRACT

ZnO nanomaterials have been extensively used as photocatalysts for the removal of pollutants in aqueous environments. This study explores the enhanced photocatalytic performance of porous ZnO coral-like nanoplates synthesized via a one-pot wet-chemical method and subsequent annealing treatment. Characterization through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements confirmed the nanoplates' porous structure, single-crystal structure, 100 nm thickness, and 80 nm pore size. These unique structural characteristics of the ZnO coral-like nanoplates enabled effective photodegradation of the organic dye rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. Under simulated sunlight, the ZnO photocatalyst exhibited exceptional performance, achieving a 97.3% removal rate of RhB after 210 minutes of irradiation. The prepared ZnO photocatalyst also showed remarkable photostability and regeneration capability for RhB photodegradation with a decreased efficiency of less than 15% after eight testing cycles. The potential mechanism of the ZnO photocatalyst toward RhB degradation was also studied and is discussed in detail.

BACKGROUND: For very preterm infants, human milk is often fortified with formula products based on processed bovine milk. Intact bovine colostrum (BC), rich in anti-inflammatory milk factors, is considered an alternative. We investigated if BC affects anti-inflammatory/TH2 immunity and infection risk in very preterm infants. METHODS: For a secondary analysis of a multicenter, randomized controlled trial (NCT03537365), very preterm infants (26-31 weeks gestation, 23% small for gestational age, SGA) were randomized to receive BC (ColoDan, Biofiber, Denmark, n = 113) or conventional fortifier (PreNAN, Nestlé, Switzerland, n = 116). Infection was defined as antibiotic treatment for five or more consecutive days and 29 cytokines/chemokines were measured in plasma before and after start of fortification. RESULTS: In general, infection risk after start of fortification was associated with low gestational age, SGA status and antibiotics use prior to fortification. Adjusted for confounders, infants fortified with BC showed more infection episodes (20 vs 12%, P < 0.05) and higher cumulative infection risk (hazard ratio, HR 1.9, P = 0.06), particularly for SGA infants (HR 3.6, P < 0.05). Additionally, BC-fortified infants had higher levels of TH2-related cytokines/chemokines (IL-10, MDC, MCP4) and reduced levels of cytokines related to TH1/TH17-responses (IL-15, IL-17, GM-CSF). The differences were most pronounced in SGA infants, displaying higher levels of TH2-related IL-4, IL-6, and IL-13, and lower interferon-γ and IL-1α levels in the BC group. CONCLUSION: Infants fortified with BC displayed a delayed shift from TH2- to TH1-biased systemic immunity, notably in SGA infants, possibly influenced by multiple confounding factors, alongside elevated antibiotic use, suggesting increased susceptibility to infection.

AIMS: The association between secondary mitral regurgitation (MR) and right ventricular (RV) dysfunction in heart failure patients with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM) is unclear. Hence, our objective was to study the association between secondary MR and the occurrence of RV dysfunction among patients with NICM using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients with NICM were enrolled in a prospective observational registry between 2008-2019. CMR was used to quantify MR severity along with RV function. RV dysfunction was defined as RV ejection fraction <45%. The outcome of the study was a composite event of all-cause death, heart transplantation, or left ventricular assist device implantation at follow-up. In the study cohort of 241 patients, RV dysfunction (RVEF < 45%) was present in 148 (61%). In comparison to patients without RV dysfunction, those with RV dysfunction had higher median MR volume (23 ml [IQR 16-31ml] vs 18 ml [IQR 12-25 ml], P=0.002) and MR fraction (33% [IQR 25-43%] vs 22% [IQR 15-29%], P<0.001). Furthermore, secondary MR was independently associated with RV dysfunction: MR volume ≥ 24ml (OR 3.21, 95% CI 1.26-8.15, P= 0.01) and MR fraction≥ 30% (OR 5.46, 95% 2.23-13.35, P=0.002). Increasing RVEF (every 1% increase) was independently associated with lower risk of adverse events (HR 0.98, 95% 0.95, 1.00, P=0.047). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with NICM, the severity of secondary MR is associated with an increased prevalence of RV dysfunction. RV dysfunction is not only associated with the severity of LV dysfunction, but also with the severity of secondary MR.

ABSTRACT

Talaromyces sp. DC2 is an endophytic fungus that was isolated from the stem of Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don in Hanoi, Vietnam and is capable of producing vinca alkaloids. This study utilizes the PacBio Sequel technology to completely sequence the whole genome of Talaromyces sp. DC2The genome study revealed that DC2 contains a total of 34.58 Mb spanned by 156 contigs, with a GC content of 46.5%. The identification and prediction of functional protein-coding genes, tRNA, and rRNA were comprehensively predicted and highly annotated using various BLAST databases, including non-redundant (Nr) protein sequence, Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), Clusters of Orthologous Groups (COG), and Carbohydrate-Active Enzymes (CAZy) databases. The genome of DC2 has a total of 149, 227, 65, 153, 53, and 6 genes responsible for cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, pectin, chitin, starch, and inulin degradation, respectively. The Antibiotics and Secondary Metabolites Analysis Shell (AntiSMASH) analyses revealed that strain DC2 possesses 20 biosynthetic gene clusters responsible for producing secondary metabolites. The strain DC2 has also been found to harbor the DDC gene encoding aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase enzyme. Conclusively, this study has provided a comprehensive understanding of the processes involved in secondary metabolites and the ability of the Talaromyces sp. DC2 strain to degrade plant cell walls.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth disrupts fetal kidney development, potentially leading to postnatal acute kidney injury. Preterm infants are deficient in insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), a growth factor that stimulates organ development. By utilizing a preterm pig model, this study investigated whether IGF-1 supplementation enhances preterm kidney maturation. METHODS: Cesarean-delivered preterm pigs were treated systemically IGF-1 or vehicle control for 5, 9 or 19 days after birth. Blood, urine, and kidney tissue were collected for biochemical, histological and gene expression analyses. Age-matched term-born pigs were sacrificed at similar postnatal ages and served as the reference group. RESULTS: Compared with term pigs, preterm pigs exhibited impaired kidney maturation, as indicated by analyses of renal morphology, histopathology, and inflammatory and injury markers. Supplementation with IGF-1 reduced signs of kidney immaturity, particularly in the first week of life, as indicated by improved morphology, upregulated expression of key developmental genes, reduced severity and incidence of microscopic lesions, and decreased levels of inflammatory and injury markers. No association was seen between the symptoms of necrotizing enterocolitis and kidney defects. CONCLUSION: Preterm birth in pigs impairs kidney maturation and exogenous IGF-1 treatment partially reverses this impairment. Early IGF-1 supplementation could support the development of preterm kidneys. IMPACT: Preterm birth may disrupt kidney development in newborns, potentially leading to morphological changes, injury, and inflammation. Preterm pigs have previously been used as models for preterm infants, but not for kidney development. IGF-1 supplementation promotes kidney maturation and alleviates renal impairments in the first week of life in preterm pigs. IGF-1 may hold potential as a supportive therapy for preterm infants sensitive to acute kidney injury.

ABSTRACT

Surgical site infection (SSI) is a common issue post-surgery which often prolongs hospitalization and can lead to serious complications such as sternal wound infection following cardiac surgery via median sternotomy. Controlled release of suitable antibiotics could allow maximizing drug efficacy and safety, and therefore achieving a desired therapeutic response. In this study, we have developed a vancomycin laden PEGylated fibrinogen-polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PF-PEGDA) hydrogel system that can release vancomycin at a controlled and predictable rate to be applied in SSI prevention. Two configurations were developed to study effect of the hydrogel on drug release, namely, vancomycin laden hydrogel and vancomycin solution on top of blank hydrogel. The relationship between the rigidity of the hydrogel and drug diffusion was found to comply with a universal power law, i.e., softer hydrogels result in a greater diffusion coefficient hence faster release rate. Besides, vancomycin laden hydrogels exhibited burst release, whereas the vancomycin solution on top of blank hydrogels exhibited lag release. A mathematical model was developed to simulate vancomycin permeation through the hydrogels. The permeation of vancomycin can be predicted accurately by using the mathematical model, which provided a useful tool to customize drug loading, hydrogel thickness and stiffness for personalized medication to manage SSI. To evaluate the potential of hydrogels for bone healing applications in cardiovascular medicine, we performed a proof-of-concept median sternotomy in rabbits and applied the hydrogels. The hydrogel formulations accelerated the onset of osteo-genetic processes in rabbits, demonstrating its potential to be used in human.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Due to high risks of feeding intolerance, preterm infants often receive parenteral nutrition (PN) to ensure sufficient nutrition and energy intake. However, there is a lack of data on the status of clinical PN practice and barriers among neonatal care units in low- to middle-income countries like Vietnam. This extensive survey explores the status and barriers of PN practice for preterm infants in neonatal units across Vietnam and identifies the practical implications of enhancing nutritional outcomes in preterm infants. METHODS: A multicenter nationwide web-based survey on PN practice in preterm infants was conducted across 114 neonatal units from 61 provinces in Vietnam. RESULTS: Among 114 neonatal units receiving a request for surveys, 104 units (91.2%) from 55 provinces participated. Neonatal units were categorized as level I (2/104, 1.9%), II (39/104, 37.5%), III (56/104, 53.8%), and IV (7/104, 6.8%). We found that the initiations of PN within the first hour and the first two hours of life occurred in 80.8% (84/104) and 95.2% (99/104) of the units, respectively. The early provision of amino acids, or AA (within the first day of life) and lipids (within two days of life) were documented by 85% (89/104) and 82% (84/104) of the respondents, respectively. The initial dose of AA ranged from 0.5 to 3 g/kg/day; the dose of AA less than 1 g/kg/day was reported by 7.7% (8/104) of the respondents; the maximum dose of AA ranged from 2 to over 4.5 g/kg/day, with 4 g/kg/day reported by 47.1% (49/104) of the respondents. The initial dose of lipids was between 0.5 and 2 g/kg/day, frequently 1 g/kg/day, reported by 51.9% (54/104) of the respondents; the target lipid dose ranged from 3 to 4 g/kg/day in 93.3% (97/104) respondents; the maximum target dose for lipid was 4 g/kg/day in 36.5% (38/104) of the respondents. The initial glucose dose was distributed as follows: 46.2% of respondents (48/104) administered 4 mg/kg/minute, 21.2% (22/104) used 5 mg/kg/minute, 28.8% (30/104) used 6 mg/kg/minute, and 3.8% (4/104) used 3 mg/kg/minute. Additionally, 48.1% of respondents (50/104) reported a maximum glucose infusion rate above 13 mg/kg/min and 19.2% (20/104) above 15 mg/kg/min. Nineteen percent (20/104) of the respondents reported a lack of micronutrients. Barriers to PN initiation included difficulty in establishing intravenous lines, the absence of standardized protocols, the lack of lipids and micronutrients, infections, and unavailable software supporting neonatologists in calculating nutrition paradigms. CONCLUSION: This study's findings highlight the highly variable PN practice across neonatal units in Vietnam. Deviations from current practical guidelines can be explained by various barriers, most of which are modifiable. A monitoring network for nutritional practice status and a database to track the nutritional outcomes of preterm infants in Vietnam are needed.

ABSTRACT

2D/2D step-scheme (S-scheme) piezo-photocatalysts for the production of fine chemicals, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), have attracted significant attention of global scientists owing to the efficiency in utilizing surface piezoelectric effects from 2D materials to overcome rapid charge recombination in photocatalytic processes. In this research, we reported the fabrication of 2D S-doped VOx deposited on 2D g-C3N4 to produce H2O2 via the piezo-photocatalytic process with high production yields at 20.19 mmol g-1 h-1, which was 1.75 and 4.87 times higher than that from solely piezo-catalytic and photocatalytic H2O2 generation. The finding pointed out that adding sulfur (S) to VOx can help to improve the catalytic outcomes by modifying the electronic properties of pristine VOx. In addition, when coupled with g-C3N4, the presence of S limits the formation of graphene in the VOx/g-C3N4 composites, causing shielding effects and pushing the cascade reactions toward water generation in the materials. Besides, the research also sheds light on the charge transport between g-C3N4 and S-VOx under irradiation and how the composites work to trigger the formation of H2O2. The presence of S in the composite systems enhances charge transfer between two semiconductors by strengthening the internal electric fields (IEF) to drive electrons moving in one direction, as demonstrated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, the formation of H2O2 significantly relies on the reduction of oxygen to generate oxygenic radical species at the g-C3N4 sites. Meanwhile, S-VOx provides oxidative sites in the composites to oxidize water molecules to directly or indirectly generate H2O2 or O2, which will further participate in the reactions to produce the final products. This study confirms the validation of S-scheme piezo-photocatalysts, thus encouraging further research on developing heterojunction materials with high catalytic efficiency, which can be used in practical conditions.

ABSTRACT

The cation channel Piezo1, a crucial mechanotransducer found in various organs and tissues, has gained considerable attention as a therapeutic target in recent years. Following this trend, several Piezo1 inhibitors have been discovered and studied for potential pharmacological properties. This review provides an overview of the structural and functional importance of Piezo1, as well as discussing the biological activities of Piezo1 inhibitors based on their mechanism of action. The compounds addressed include the toxin GsMTx4, Aß peptides, certain fatty acids, ruthenium red and gadolinium, Dooku1, as well as the natural products tubeimoside I, salvianolic acid B, jatrorrhzine, and escin. The findings revealed that misexpression of Piezo1 can be associated with a number of chronic diseases, including hypertension, cancer, and hemolytic anemia. Consequently, inhibiting Piezo1 and the subsequent calcium influx can have beneficial effects on various pathological processes, as shown by many in vitro and in vivo studies. However, the development of Piezo1 inhibitors is still in its beginnings, with many opportunities and challenges remaining to be explored.

ABSTRACT

Blood pressure (BP) is predicted by this effort based on photoplethysmography (PPG) data to provide effective pre-warning of possible preeclampsia of pregnant women. Towards frequent BP measurement, a PPG sensor device is utilized in this study as a solution to offer continuous, cuffless blood pressure monitoring frequently for pregnant women. PPG data were collected using a flexible sensor patch from the wrist arteries of 194 subjects, which included 154 normal individuals and 40 pregnant women. Deep-learning models in 3 stages were built and trained to predict BP. The first stage involves developing a baseline deep-learning BP model using a dataset from common subjects. In the 2nd stage, this model was fine-tuned with data from pregnant women, using a 1-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN) with Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAMs), followed by bi-directional Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs) layers and attention layers. The fine-tuned model results in a mean error (ME) of -1.40 ± 7.15 (standard deviation, SD) for systolic blood pressure (SBP) and -0.44 (ME) ± 5.06 (SD) for diastolic blood pressure (DBP). At the final stage is the personalization for individual pregnant women using transfer learning again, enhancing further the model accuracy to -0.17 (ME) ± 1.45 (SD) for SBP and 0.27 (ME) ± 0.64 (SD) for DBP showing a promising solution for continuous, non-invasive BP monitoring in precision by the proposed 3-stage of modeling, fine-tuning and personalization.

ABSTRACT

Breathing effort is important to quantify to understand mechanisms underlying central and obstructive sleep apnea, respiratory-related arousals, and the timing and effectiveness of invasive or non-invasive mechanically assisted ventilation. Current quantitative methods to evaluate breathing effort rely on inspiratory esophageal or epiglottic pressure swings or changes in diaphragm electromyographic (EMG) activity, where units are problematic to interpret and compare between individuals and to measured ventilation. This paper derives a novel method to quantify breathing effort in units directly comparable to measured ventilation by applying respiratory mechanics first principles to convert continuous transpulmonary pressure measurements into "attempted" airflow expected to have arisen without upper airway obstruction. The method was evaluated using data from eleven subjects undergoing overnight polysomnography, including 6 obese patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), including one who also had frequent central events, and 5 healthy-weight controls. Classic respiratory mechanics showed excellent fits of airflow and volume to transpulmonary pressures during wake periods of stable unobstructed breathing (mean ± SD r² = 0.94 ± 0.03), with significantly higher respiratory system resistance in patients compared to healthy controls (11.2 ± 3.3 vs 7.1 ± 1.9 cmH2O·l-1·sec, P=0.032). Subsequent estimates of attempted airflow from transpulmonary pressure changes clearly highlighted periods of acute and prolonged upper airway obstruction, including within the first few breaths following sleep onset in patients. This novel technique provides unique quantitative insights into the complex and dynamically changing inter-relationships between breathing effort and achieved airflow during periods of obstructed breathing in sleep.

ABSTRACT

Background and Aims: Job satisfaction of healthcare workers from conventional and university hospitals (or teaching hospitals) might be different due to several factors, for example medical staff required to carry out multiple clinical and teaching tasks simultaneously. Our study aimed to determine how the job satisfaction among healthcare workers in university hospitals is different from those in conventional hospitals. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted by using the validated and contextualized job satisfaction tool for the Vietnamese context to survey 216 healthcare workers at a university hospital in Vietnam from January to March 2020 with online Google forms. Results: The results indicated low overall job satisfaction (43.1%) in our study university hospital with the score cutoff of 80%. However, healthcare workers still reported high job satisfaction rates in certain aspects, such as personal empathy (70.8%), discipline, and reward (67.6%), co-worker collaboration (65.3%), training and promotion (63%), workplace environment (57.4%), and salary and allowance (44.9%). Subgroup analysis revealed statistically significant differences in job satisfaction (p < 0.01) related to age (31 to 40-year-old), and job position with ORs 3.9, and 8.6 respectively. Conclusion: University hospitals need to improve the healthcare workers' job satisfaction. It is recommended that special human resource strategies should be developed focusing on keeping satisfying older healthcare staff by recognizing their contributions and providing appropriate benefits based on their positions in the hospital.

ABSTRACT

Deep intertrabecular recesses and overly pronounced trabeculations in one ventricle are the hallmarks of noncompaction cardiomyopathy (NCCM), a rare congenital cardiomyopathy but very rarely right ventricle (RV), or both ventricles may be involved. We reported a 5-day-old preterm newborn with signs of congestive heart failure that the transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) revealed deep intertrabecular recesses perfused from the left ventricle (LV) and RV cavity, as well as significantly increased wall thickness of the right ventricles and hypertrabeculations in the apical and midventricular segments.

ABSTRACT

Appendiceal diverticulitis is an uncommon condition that clinically resembles acute appendicitis. However, it is an incidental finding in histopathological studies and is rarely diagnosed preoperatively by imaging studies. In this article, we present the clinical and imaging findings of a male patient presenting with right upper quadrant pain with a preoperative imaging diagnosis of appendiceal diverticulitis. He underwent laparoscopic appendectomy and confirmed the diagnosis of appendiceal diverticulitis. This is a rare preoperative diagnosis. The management is often like typical appendicitis which is appendectomy. It is important to differentiate it from diverticulitis of the small intestine or colon because these diseases usually require only conservative treatment.

ABSTRACT

In this study, seven new pentacyclic triterpene glycosides, named dendrocinaosides A-G (1-7), and six known ones (8-13) were isolated from the whole plants of Dendrobium officinale. Their structures were determined by analyses of HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR spectra. Compounds 1-4, 8, and 9 potentially inhibited α-glucosidase and α-amylase activities with the IC50 values ranging from 31.3 ± 2.2 to 42.4 ± 2.5 µM for anti α-glucosidase and from 36.5 ± 1.8 to 56.4 ± 2.0 µM for anti α-amylase activities, respectively, which were lower than that of the positive control, acarbose, showing IC50 values of 47.1 ± 1.4 µM for anti α-glucosidase and 145.7 ± 2.2 µM for anti α-amylase.
