ABSTRACT

The main aim of this study is to investigate the material and monetary flows of CDW management and to characterize the distribution of illegally dumped CDW in Hanoi. Construction and demolition waste management has become a source of much concern to the urban authorities and citizens of big cities in Vietnam. It is estimated that 3000 t of CDW were generated per day from construction and demolition activities in Hanoi, but only 45% of the CDW was received at official landfills, while 55% of the CDW was disposed of elsewhere. The consequences of improper waste management are potentially alarming. The study conducted interviews to identify the material and cash flow associated with licensed and unlicensed contractors in CDW classification, transportation, treatment, and disposal, to characterize the distribution of illegally dumped CDW in two districts in Hanoi (urban and suburban districts), and to assess the composition of dumped CDW and environmental assessment of illegally dumped CDW by chemical analyses such as leaching and content tests. The study concluded that illegal dumping was performed mostly by unlicensed private companies. The illegally dumped CDW was mostly composed of mixed materials such as concrete, bricks, stones, and some hazardous materials such as asbestos and gypsum were found. The environmental concern of illegally dumped CDW was mostly dust, blockage of water ways, and inundation of increased suspended solids, whereas the heavy metal leaching concentration of all samples was below the environmental standards in Vietnam.

ABSTRACT

Aerogels are becoming a promising platform to fabricate photothermal materials for use in solar steam generation (SSG), which have remarkable application potential in solar desalination, due to their excellent thermal management, salt resistance, and considerable water evaporation rate. In this work, a novel photothermal material is fabricated by forming a suspension between sugarcane bagasse fibers (SBF) and poly(vinyl alcohol), tannic acid (TA), and Fe3+ solutions via hydrogen bonds of hydroxyl groups. After freeze drying, the fabricated SBF aerogel-based photothermal (SBFAP) material possesses a 3D interconnected porous microstructure, which could enhance water transportation ability, reduce thermal conductivity, and quickly dissolve salt crystals on the SBFAP surface. Thanks to the formation of micro/nanosized complexes between TA and Fe3+ ions on the SBFAP material, the SBFAP exhibits high light capture and water evaporation rate (2.28 kg m-2 h-1). In particular, due to strong hydrogen bonding and the SBF, the SBFAP material is reinforced, thereby exhibiting excellent structural stability in seawater. Moreover, the high salt tolerance of SBFAP favors its high desalination performance for at least 76 days of continuous evaporation under actual conditions. This research paves the way for the fabrication of natural cellulose fiber-based photothermal materials for application in solar desalination.

ABSTRACT

The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) and its variants are found in many fields, especially logistics. In this study, we introduced an adaptive method to a complex VRP. It combines multi-objective optimization and several forms of VRPs with practical requirements for an urban shipment system. The optimizer needs to consider terrain and traffic conditions. The proposed model also considers customers' expectations and shipper considerations as goals, and a common goal such as transportation cost. We offered compromise programming to approach the multi-objective problem by decomposing the original multi-objective problem into a minimized distance-based problem. We designed a hybrid version of the genetic algorithm with the local search algorithm to solve the proposed problem. We evaluated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm with the Tabu Search algorithm and the original genetic algorithm on the tested dataset. The results show that our method is an effective decision-making tool for the multi-objective VRP and an effective solver for the new variation of VRP.

ABSTRACT

Steel slag is an industrial by product of steel manufacturing processes and has been widely utilized within civil and construction materials for road materials and environmental remediation in countries like Japan, USA, and European Union nations. However, the current utilization of steel slag in Vietnam is very low mainly because of lack of quality control of slag treatment and chances for reuse of treated steel slag. This paper presents the up to date steel slag production status in Vietnam through the extensive survey and sampling at seven large steel factories. The paper also highlights the environmental and quality control issues of these steel slags to use as road construction aggregates by assessing the heavy metals concentration in the leachate. The basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) slag samples were collected to evaluate leaching properties of metals leached from the slags. The two standardized batch leaching tests of steel slag roadbed material in Japan (JIS K 0058-1) and toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP-EPA method 1311) were performed to the evaluated the hazardous metals. The results of the leaching test show that almost all of the concentration of the metals in the leached solution does not exceed the National Standard for Industrial Wastewater Discharge (QCVN 40-2011). The pH and parameters such as total chromium, nickel, copper, lead, arsenic, and manganese differ from the two test methods. The acidic conditions employed in the EPA 1311 were not representative of condition excepted during slag reuse in road constructions because in the operation condition of the road, acidic liquid is absent. The leaching test results confirmed that JIS test which uses deionized water with gentle mixing prevents the slag sample from size degradation is suitable for the environmental assessment of steel slag use for roadbed material. This research suggests that the adjustment of pH value prior to disposal or reuse as base materials and official guideline should be promulgate by the authorities to ensure the leachate meet the surface water quality standard.

ABSTRACT

Increasing waste generation and the absence of a formal recycling industry are exacerbating the inadequacy of Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) management in Hanoi, Vietnam. This study assesses potential CDW recycling in Hanoi by estimating the prospective supply of and demand for CDW recycling plants and evaluating their likely costs and benefits. Supply of concrete waste was calculated based on the weight-per-construction-area method whilst demand for recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) was determined by estimating the amount of aggregates for road construction in Hanoi from 2013 to 2017. Two potential models of CDW recycling plants were considered: a stationary plant and a mobile plant, with capacities of 1,000 and 360 tons/day, respectively. Our findings reveal that demand for RCA exceeds waste concrete supply, suggesting a promising market for RCA. Positive Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return values of the stationary plant indicate its feasibility as an investment option. Meanwhile, the introduction of mobile recycling plants might require governmental intervention to internalize recycling positive externalities. Supporting policies might include a combination of a virgin material tax, green public procurement, and quality standard development.

ABSTRACT

This study conducted a survey at 15 building construction and demolition sites in Hanoi, Vietnam in order to identify waste generation rates (WGR), composition, and current handling practices of construction and demolition waste (CDW). Waste quantification based on CDW layout, image analysis to identify CDW components, and face-to-face interviews with construction and demolition contractors to reveal CDW flows were performed. WGRs of 79.3 kg/m2 and 1,030 kg/m2 were determined in small- and large-scale construction sites, respectively, whilst WGRs at small and large demolition sites were 610 kg/m2 and 318 kg/m2. The composition analysis identified soil, concrete, and brick as the major CDW components, consistent with building structures in Vietnam. The interviews discovered that merely 10% of total CDW flows was from recycled and reused CDW. Reuse and recycling rates were most significant for metal and were lower (in descending order) for brick, concrete, and soil. These findings raise a need for aggressive and integrated strategies to promote more sustainable CDW management in the country, including the development of recycled CDW product standards, policies that facilitate recycling, and more importantly, a sustainable business model for CDW recycling, for which future evaluations of economic feasibility are of great importance.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gonadal hormones are mainly thought to account for sex and gender differences in the incidence, clinical manifestation and therapy of many cardiovascular diseases. However, intrinsic sex differences at the cellular level are mostly overlooked. Here, we assessed sex-specific metabolic and functional differences between male and female human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). METHODS: Cellular metabolism was investigated by bioenergetic studies (Seahorse Analyser) and a metabolomic approach. Protein levels were determined by Western blots and proteome analysis. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-stimulated cellular migration was assessed by gap closure. HUVECs from dizygotic twin pairs were used for most experiments. RESULTS: No sex differences were observed in untreated cells. However, sexual dimorphisms appeared after stressing the cells by serum starvation and treatment with VEGF. Under both conditions, female cells had higher intracellular ATP and metabolite levels. A significant decline in ATP levels was observed in male cells after serum starvation. After VEGF, the ratio of glycolysis/mitochondrial respiration was higher in female cells and migration was more pronounced. CONCLUSIONS: These results point to an increased stress tolerance of female cells. We therefore propose that female cells have an energetic advantage over male cells under conditions of diminished nutrient supply. A more favourable energy balance of female HUVECs after serum starvation and VEGF could potentially explain their stronger migratory capacity.
