ABSTRACT

In this study, a polyacrylonitrile nanofiber membrane was first hydrolyzed and then functionalized with tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (P-Tris), then used as an affinity nanofiber membrane for lysozyme adsorption in membrane chromatography. The dynamic adsorption behavior of lysozyme was investigated in a flow system under various operating parameters, including adsorption pHs, initial feed lysozyme concentration, loading flow rate, and the number of stacked membrane layers. Four different kinetic models, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models, were applied to experimental data from breakthrough curves of lysozyme. The results showed that the dynamic adsorption results were fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The breakthrough curve experimental results show significant differences in the breakthrough time, the dynamic binding capacity, the length of the mass transfer zone, and the utilization rate of the membrane bed under different operating parameters. Four dynamic adsorption models (i.e., Bohart-Adams, Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, and BDST models) were used to analyze the breakthrough curve characteristics of the dynamic adsorption experiments. Among them, the Yoon-Nelson model was the best model to fit the breakthrough curve. However, some of the theoretical results based on the Thomas and Bohart-Adams model analyses of the breakthrough curve fit well with the experimental data, with an error percentage of <5%. The Bohart-Adams model has the largest difference from the experimental results; hence it is not suitable for breakthrough curve analysis. These results significantly impact dynamic kinetics studies and breakthrough curve characteristic analysis in membrane bed chromatography.

ABSTRACT

Oxyurichthys is a genus of goby that is widespread in the tropical Indo-West Pacific region. Oxyurichthys species are usually found in estuarine and coastal marine habitats. In Southeast Asia, they are commercial fishes and often collected by trawling to serve the market's demand. The mitogenome serves as a good marker for investigating the systematics and evolution of fishes, but the mitogenome of Oxyurichthys species remains unknown. In this study, mitogenomes of two Oxyurichthys gobies, O. ophthalmonema and O. microlepis, were characterized and compared. The sizes of the mitogenomes were 16,504 bp and 16,506 bp for O. ophthalmonema and O. microlepis, respectively. Mitogenomes of these two species were similar in gene content and structure. Both included 37 genes and a control region. The two Oxyurichthys mitogenomes shared similar gene features and base composition with other recorded gobies. Typical conserved blocks (CSB-1, CSB-2, CSB-3 and CSB-D) were found in the control region of both species. Phylogenetic analyses based on concatenation of 13 protein-coding genes and 2 rRNAs revealed that the two Oxyurichthys species clustered together and were sister to species of the genera Sicydium, Sicyopterus and Stiphodon. The findings of the present study support previous evolutionary studies of gobies using other molecular markers.

ABSTRACT

The feeding strategies of Montipora digitata and Porites lutea, two dominant corals in the Okinawan reefs, were investigated. The focus was on pico- and nanoplankton feeding efficiencies, using 6-h incubations. Although healthy M. digitata consumed from 72% to 87% more pico-nanoplankton cells than P. lutea, feeding rates of bleached corals of both species were similarly low at heat stress (33 °C). Heterotrophic carbon acquisition with respect to dark respiration varied from 3% to 65% in M. digitata and from 7% to 68% in P. lutea. A decrease in the feeding efficiency of bleached M. digitata under heat stress shows its vulnerability to water heating events. Feeding rates of P. lutea were low under all conditions and treatments; therefore, this species is less vulnerable to heat stress due to the strategy of meeting metabolic costs by using translocated organic matter from endoliths and selecting pico-nanoplankton cells with a high C/N ratio.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the effects of temperature inversions on the concentration of some pollutants in the atmosphere in Hanoi City, Vietnam, during the period from 2011 to 2015. This work also aimed to evaluate relationships between the thermal inversion and health effects that are associated with air pollution. During this period, the temperature inversions were most frequently presenting from November to March in Hanoi City. Air quality data was gathered from air quality monitoring stations located in the study area. The data showed that levels of NO2, SO2, PM10 and PM2.5 increased when the inversions strengthened. Cases of two types of diseases (acute respiratory diseases and cardiovascular diseases), which are linked to atmospheric air pollution, were considered on number of patients under 15 and above 60 years old at National Geriatric Hospital and National Otorhinolaryngology Hospital. There was significant increase in the daily average number of hospital visits with increasing surface-based inversions. The statistical analysis showed that the temperature inversions correlated with concentration of air pollutants and the number of patients in 5 years.
