ABSTRACT

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a group of concerned persistent toxic substances, especially for their application or unintentional formation in food contact materials (FCMs). However, information about the occurrence, sources, and fate of these pollutants in food packaging materials from Vietnam as well as Southeast Asian countries is probably still obscured. In this study, levels of 13 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and 4 sulfonates (PFSs) were determined in various types of food packaging samples collected from Vietnamese markets. Generally low concentrations of total 17 PFASs (median 0.341; max 624 ng/g) suggested that these compounds were mainly inadvertently produced rather than intentionally added to the packaging materials. A few mochi paper tray samples had relatively high PFAS levels (372-624 ng/g), which were dominated by long-chain (C8-C12) PFCAs. A comprehensive and updated overview of PFASs in FCMs from different countries in the world was also provided. Current database could not provide conclusive trends of PFAS concentrations and profiles in FCMs between continents and countries. The highest levels up to ppm were reported for PFCAs (e.g., PFBA, PFHxA, PFOA, and PFDA) and several fluorotelomer alcohols and carboxylic acids, while PFSs were almost absent in FCMs. FPASs can emit from FCMs, migrate to food, and then contribute to dietary exposure in humans and animals. Additional investigations on the occurrence, sources, behavior and fate, and impacts of PFASs in FCMs are critically needed, especially in emerging and developing countries.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we aim to fabricate a highly stable and flexible perovskite paper photodetector based on a Zn-doped MA0.6FA0.4PbI3 perovskite and CNC. The paper photodetector has been successfully synthesized by the vacuum filtration method and deposited with interdigitated electrodes. The paper photodetector exhibits a significant photoresponse with a responsivity of 0.23 A W-1 under 650 nm light irradiation when operated at 5 V. The stability of the paper photodetector has also been tested and it shows high photoresponse after 30 days under ambient conditions. Therefore, this paper photodetector holds promise for developing efficient, stable, and flexible optoelectronic devices in the future.

ABSTRACT

Reconfigurable metasurfaces (RMSs) that enable the switching function of absorption and polarization conversion have attracted increasing attention. However, the design of RMSs to achieve wideband and high efficiency for both absorption and polarization conversion functions simultaneously remains a great challenge. Here, we propose the design of a RMS structure with a high-efficiency cross-polarization conversion and nearly perfect absorption. The reconfiguration between different functions of polarization conversion and absorption is obtained based on the reversible insulator-to-metal phase transition of Vanadium dioxide (VO[Formula: see text]). When the VO[Formula: see text] is in insulator state, the RMS realizes the cross-polarization conversion function in the wideband of 1.04-3.75 THz with a relative bandwidth up to 113 [Formula: see text] due to the multi-resonant modes of electric and magnetic resonances. Meanwhile, the nearly-perfect absorption is achieved in the range of 1.36-3.38 THz with the corresponding relative bandwidth up to 85 [Formula: see text] for the VO[Formula: see text] in metallic state. Specially, the wideband and high-efficiency performance of these functionalities is maintained for a wide angle incidence. The capability of bi-functional switch and integration with polarization conversion and absorption in a single metasurface structure endowed with both wideband and high-efficiency characteristics for a wide incident angle is very promising for emerging RMS devices in the terahertz region.

ABSTRACT

A simple design of a broadband multifunctional polarization converter using an anisotropic metasurface for X-band application is proposed. The proposed polarization converter consists of a periodic array of the two-corner-cut square patch resonators based on the FR-4 substrate that achieves both cross-polarization and linear-to-circular polarization conversions. The simulated results show that the polarization converter displays the linear cross-polarization conversion in the frequency range from 8 to 12 GHz with the polarization conversion efficiency above 90%. The efficiency is kept higher than 80% with wide incident angle up to 45°. Moreover, the proposed design achieves the linear-to-circular polarization conversion at two frequency bands of 7.42-7.6 GHz and 13-13.56 GHz. A prototype of the proposed polarization converter is fabricated and measured, showing a good agreement between the measured and simulated results. The proposed polarization converter exhibits excellent performances such as simple structure, multifunctional property, and large cost-efficient bandwidth and wide incident angle insensitivity in the linear cross polarization conversion, which can be useful for X-band applications. Furthermore, this structure can be extended to design broadband polarization converters in other frequency bands.

ABSTRACT

A simple and inexpensive approach for determination of various antimicrobial drugs using a purpose-made compact capillary electrophoresis (CE) instrument with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C4D) is reported. The objective of the work is to propose an affordable and easily-implemented tool for quality control and detection of counterfeiting of antibiotic formulations in resource constrained developing countries. The design of the purpose-made CE-C4D system was improved according to the feedback from over 10 years of use of our previous instrument. CE-C4D methods were for the first time developed to analyze ß-lactam-based antibiotics commonly used in Vietnam, including single- ß-lactam antibiotics (i.e. Cephalexin, Cefotaxime Sodium, Cefixime and Sulbactam) as well as ß-lactams co-formulated with Sulbactam (i.e. Amoxicillin, Ampicillin, Cefoperazone and Sulbactam). Single ß-lactam antibiotics were analyzed using a background electrolyte (BGE) composed of Tris/Ace (10 mM, pH 7.8) whereas ß-lactam - Sulbactam combinations were simultaneously separated using a BGE containing Tris/Ace (10 mM, pH 7.5). The best achieved detection limits were 2.0 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L for these two groups, respectively. Good agreement between results obtained from CE-C4D and standard confirmation methods (LCMS) was achieved, with a coefficient of determination, r2, of 0.9991. The applicability of the developed CE-C4D method was demonstrated for quality control of 24 ß-lactam-based antimicrobial drugs available in Vietnam.

ABSTRACT

An inexpensive, robust and easy to use portable capillary electrophoresis instrument with miniaturized high-voltage capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection was developed. The system utilizes pneumatic operation to manipulate the solutions for all flushing steps. The different operations, i.e. capillary flushing, interface rinsing, and electrophoretic separation, are easily activated by turning an electronic switch. To allow the analysis of samples with limited available volume, and to render the construction less complicated compared to a computer-controlled counterpart, sample injection is carried out hydrodynamically directly from the sample vial into the capillary by manual syphoning. The system is a well performing solution where the financial means for the highly expensive commercial instruments are not available and where the in-house construction of a sophisticated automated instrument is not possible due to limited mechanical and electronic workshop facilities and software programming expertise. For demonstration, the system was employed successfully for the determination of some ß-agonists, namely salbutamol, metoprolol and ractopamine down to 0.7ppm in pharmaceutical and pig-feed sample matrices in Vietnam.

ABSTRACT

In an investigation on 215 patients (55 females, 160 males) aged 80-82, suffering from gastric, duodenal ulcer with Helicobacter pylori (+), 155 samples were isolated with a rate of successful culture of 72.1% and 116 strains of bacteria underwent an antibiogramme procedure for determining the sensitivity of the bacterium. Results showed the antibiotic resistance of metronidazole (M), clarithromycine (CLA), amoxycillin rating 54.3%, 21.6%, 18.1% respectively, with no difference concerning the age and the gender. During 3 years (2000-2002) there was a trend of enhance of resistance to 3 mentioned antibiotics, and metrodiazole got the highest resistance rate. These antibiotics are currently the most common tools to eliminate H. pylori, therefore this is a considerable concern in the treatment of gastro-duodenal ulcer of the next future
