ABSTRACT

African swine fever virus (ASFV) genotype II is endemic to Vietnam. We detected recombinant ASFV genotypes I and II (rASFV I/II) strains in domestic pigs from 6 northern provinces in Vietnam. The introduction of rASFV I/II strains could complicate ongoing ASFV control measures in the region.

ABSTRACT

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia. It results in cortical thickness changes and is associated with a decline in cognition and behaviour. Such decline affects multiple important day-to-day functions, including memory, language, orientation, judgment and problem-solving. Recent research has made important progress in identifying brain regions associated with single outcomes, such as individual AD status and general cognitive decline. The complex projection from multiple brain areas to multiple AD outcomes, however, remains poorly understood. This makes the assessment and especially the prediction of multiple AD outcomes - each of which may unveil an integral yet different aspect of the disease - challenging, particularly when some are not strongly correlated. Here, uniting residual learning, partial least squares (PLS), and predictive modelling, we develop an explainable, generalisable, and reproducible method called the Residual Partial Least Squares Learning (the re-PLS Learning) to (1) chart the pathways between large-scale multivariate brain cortical thickness data (inputs) and multivariate disease and behaviour data (outcomes); (2) simultaneously predict multiple, non-pairwise-correlated outcomes; (3) control for confounding variables (e.g., age and gender) affecting both inputs and outcomes and the pathways in-between; (4) perform longitudinal AD disease status classification and disease severity prediction. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method against a variety of alternatives on data from AD patients, subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and cognitively normal individuals (n=1,196) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Our results unveil pockets of brain areas in the temporal, frontal, sensorimotor, and cingulate areas whose cortical thickness may be respectively associated with declines in different cognitive and behavioural subdomains in AD. Finally, we characterise re-PLS' geometric interpretation and mathematical support for delivering meaningful neurobiological insights and provide an open software package (re-PLS) available at https://github.com/thanhvd18/rePLS.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: 3D-to-2D fluoroscopic registration is a popular and important step for analyzing total-knee-arthroplasty weight-bearing kinematics. Unfortunately, in vivo analyses using these techniques cannot be completed if the associated computer-aided design implant models are not available. This study introduces a novel method that enables the accessible computation of knee replacement patients' kinematics from fluoroscopy, achieved through the reconstruction of 3-dimensional knee component models using a limited set of 2-dimensional X-ray or fluoroscopic images. METHODS: The proposed non-rigid morphing algorithm, based on the coherent point drift algorithm, scales and transforms the shape of the template model to fit with the silhouette of the corresponding fluoroscopic images without changing the structure of the knee implant. While a greater number of fluoroscopic images can lead to higher accuracy, our study utilizes only 4 images. FINDINGS: The morphed models show excellent results in comparison with known models with a 0.52 mm average root-mean-square error and a 2.82 mm largest source error for 17 tested knee models of various implant types. The proposed algorithm also enables direct output of patient kinematics using fluoroscopy, with an average error of only 0.54 ± 0.42 mm for femorotibial contact and 0.86 ± 0.34 degrees for axial rotation. INTERPRETATION: A novel methodology was introduced to overcome common 3-dimentional to 2-dimensional registration limitations by recreating entire families of 3 dimensional models from a limited number of fluoroscopic images for both cruciate-retaining and posterior-stabilized knee replacement implants. Our algorithm has demonstrated high levels of accuracy with multiple potential extended applications.

ABSTRACT

Today, the rapid development of industrial zones leads to an increased incidence of skin diseases because of polluted air. According to a report by the American Cancer Society, it is estimated that in 2022 there will be about 100,000 people suffering from skin cancer and more than 7600 of these people will not survive. In the context that doctors at provincial hospitals and health facilities are overloaded, doctors at lower levels lack experience, and having a tool to support doctors in the process of diagnosing skin diseases quickly and accurately is essential. Along with the strong development of artificial intelligence technologies, many solutions to support the diagnosis of skin diseases have been researched and developed. In this paper, a combination of one Deep Learning model (DenseNet, InceptionNet, ResNet, etc) with Soft-Attention, which unsupervisedly extract a heat map of main skin lesions. Furthermore, personal information including age and gender are also used. It is worth noting that a new loss function that takes into account the data imbalance is also proposed. Experimental results on data set HAM10000 show that using InceptionResNetV2 with Soft-Attention and the new loss function gives 90 percent accuracy, mean of precision, F1-score, recall, and AUC of 0.81, 0.81, 0.82, and 0.99, respectively. Besides, using MobileNetV3Large combined with Soft-Attention and the new loss function, even though the number of parameters is 11 times less and the number of hidden layers is 4 times less, it achieves an accuracy of 0.86 and 30 times faster diagnosis than InceptionResNetV2.

ABSTRACT

Hypericum sampsonii is an important medicinal plant used in Vietnam to treat many diseases such as backache, burns, diarrhea, and swelling. In order to study the chemical constituents in the aerial parts of H. sampsonii, five compounds, including two xanthones (1-2), and three benzophenones (3-5) were isolated from the aerial parts of the H. sampsonii with various chromatographic separations. Their chemical structures were established on the basis of spectroscopic data such as 1D- and 2D-NMR, HR-ESI-MS. Their anti-inflammatory activities were investigated by measuring nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 cells. Moreover, the DPPH radical scavenging was evaluated. As the obtained results, compound 5 showed the strongest inhibitory activity against LPS-stimulated NO production in RAW264.7 cells with IC50 value ranging from 2.00 ± 0.34 µM.

ABSTRACT

Recently, flood risk assessments have been extended to national and continental scales. Most of these assessments assume homogeneous scenarios, i.e. the regional risk estimate is obtained by summing up the local estimates, whereas each local damage value has the same probability of exceedance. This homogeneity assumption ignores the spatial variability in the flood generation processes. Here, we develop a multi-site, extreme value statistical model for 379 catchments across Europe, generate synthetic flood time series which consider the spatial correlation between flood peaks in all catchments, and compute corresponding economic damages. We find that the homogeneity assumption overestimates the 200-year flood damage, a benchmark indicator for the insurance industry, by 139%, 188% and 246% for the United Kingdom (UK), Germany and Europe, respectively. Our study demonstrates the importance of considering the spatial dependence patterns, particularly of extremes, in large-scale risk assessments.

ABSTRACT

Thus far, only one gene from the heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) family has been identified in Artemia franciscana. Here, we used the draft Artemia transcriptome database to search for other genes in the HSP70 family. Four novel HSP70 genes were identified and designated heat shock cognate 70 (HSC70), heat shock 70 kDa cognate 5 (HSC70-5), Immunoglobulin heavy-chain binding protein (BIP), and hypoxia up-regulated protein 1 (HYOU1). For each of these genes, we obtained nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences, and reconstructed a phylogenetic tree. Expression analysis revealed that in the juvenile state, the transcription of HSP70 and HSC70 was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in a population of A. franciscana selectively bred for increased induced thermotolerance (TF12) relative to a control population (CF12). Following non-lethal heat shock treatment at the nauplius stage, transcription of HSP70, HSC70, and HSC70-5 were significantly (P < 0.05) up-regulated in TF12. In contrast, transcription of the other HSP70 family members in A. franciscana (BIP, HYOU1, and HSPA4) showed no significant (P > 0.05) induction. Gene expression analysis demonstrated that not all members of the HSP70 family are involved in the response to heat stress and selection and that especially altered expression of HSC70 plays a role in a population selected for increased thermotolerance.

ABSTRACT

The present paper aims at presenting a kinetic model that is supposed to result in the decomposition of methylparaben in completely mixed batch reactor (CMBR) using the UV/H2O2 process. The proposed model incorporates photochemical, chemical reactions and their constant rates to formulate the overall kinetic rate expressions which are integrated into MATLAB. Thus, the changes in pH values during the process of oxidation are taken into consideration. In addition, the effects of hydrogen peroxide (HP) dosage, as well as the concentration of hydroxyl radicals, are examined. Accordingly, the pseudo-first-order rate constant, its variation as functions of HP concentration, incident UV-light intensity and the limitations of the adopted approach are discussed. In line with that, the authors provided evidence of the validity of the kinetic model through the exposure of previous experimental studies as reported in the literature review then through the evidence of the present experimental data.

ABSTRACT

Ascorbate is an essential nutrient commonly regarded as an antioxidant. In this study, using axenic brine shrimp and pathogenic strain Vibrio harveyi as the host-pathogen model, we confirmed that pretreatment of sodium ascorbate (NaAs), at an optimum concentration, was a prooxidant by generation of hydrogen peroxide, inducing protective effects in the brine shrimp against V. harveyi infection. Such a protective effect could be neutralized by the addition of an antioxidant enzyme catalase. We further showed that generation of oxygen radicals is linked to the induction of heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70), which is involved in eliciting the antioxidant protection system including superoxidase dismutase (SOD) and possibly many other immune responses. Furthermore, using RNA interference technique, we found that the pretreatment of sodium ascorbate increased the survival significantly in the control knockdown groups (using green fluorescent protein, GFP) but not in Hsp70 knockdown groups and the result directly suggested that the up-regulated Hsp70 induced by sodium ascorbate pretreatment induced the protective effect. These results provide a mechanistic rationale for exploring the further use of ascorbate for antimicrobial therapy in aquaculture.
