ABSTRACT

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has proved to be a promising heterogeneous photocatalyst in the visible range. It can be used, among others, for the oxidative conversion of environmentally harmful nitrophenols occurring in wastewater. However, its photocatalytic activity needs to be enhanced, which can be achieved by modification with various dopants. In our work, copper-modified g-C3N4 was prepared by ultrasonic impregnation of the pristine g-C3N4 synthesized from thiourea. The morphology, microstructure, and optical properties of the photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, DRS, SEM, XPS, and TEM. DRS analysis indicated a slight change in both the CB and the VB energies of Cu/g-C3N4 compared to those of g-C3N4. The efficiency of the photocatalysts prepared was tested by the degradation of nitrophenols. Copper modification caused a sevenfold increase in the rate of 4-nitrophenol degradation in the presence of H2O2 at pH = 3. This dramatic enhancement can be attributed to the synergistic effect of copper and H2O2 in this photocatalytic system. A minor Fenton reaction role was also detected. The reusability of the Cu/g-C3N4 catalyst was demonstrated through five cycles. Copper-modified g-C3N4 with H2O2 proved to be applicable for efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic oxidative degradation of nitrophenols.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the effective fabrication of an inverse opal (IO) structure for plasmon-induced hyperthermia applications using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) doped in a conducting polymer of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT). Indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates were firstly modified electrochemically by a layer of the inverse opal structure of PEDOT (IO-PEDOT). These as-prepared electrodes were subsequently used as working electrodes for electrodepositing AgNPs. The presence of plasmonic AgNPs doped inside a polymer network caused the hybrid of IO-PEDOT and AgNPs to generate significantly more heat than thin-film PEDOT, thin-film PEDOT/AgNPs, and IO-PEDOT under 532 nm laser irradiation. This is attributed to the synergistic effect of the large active area inverse opal structure and doped AgNPs, which exhibit more thermal energy and heat faster than the individual component structures. These findings point to a wide range of potential applications for hybrid IO-PEDOT/AgNPs in hyperthermia treatment.

ABSTRACT

The pyridinedicarboxylate-Tb(III) complexes, TbPDC and Tb(PDC)3, as luminescent probes for ATP monitoring have been conveniently prepared and characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, ESI-MS, UV-Vis, excitation, and emission spectroscopy. Interestingly, these two Tb(III) complexes were quenched by ATP by a similar mechanism via π-π stacking interaction between the chelating ligand and adenine moiety. The ability of luminescent probes applied for the determination of ATP in aqueous solution has been investigated. The dynamic ranges for the quantification of ATP are within 10-90 µM and 10-100 µM with detection limits of 7.62 and 11.20 µM for TbPDC and Tb(PDC)3, respectively. The results demonstrated that these luminescent probes would be a potential candidate assay for ATP monitoring in hygiene assessment.

ABSTRACT

A new species of Gesneriaceae, Didymocarpus phuquocensis, is described and illustrated from Phu Quoc National Park, Kien Giang Province, South-western Vietnam. It is most similar to D. pulcher, D. hookeri and D. punduanus in having 3-verticillate petiolate leaves, morphologically similar calyx, corolla, stamens, pistil and fruit, but differs from all in the glandular-pubescent stems, petioles and leaf blades, 1(-2)-flowered cymes, longer corolla and fruit and longer and densely glandular-puberulent ovary. Data on distribution, ecology, phenology and provisional conservation assessment of the new species are given along with an illustration and a colour plate.

ABSTRACT

A simple and inexpensive method for the identification of four substituted amphetamines, namely, 3,4-methylenedioxy methamphetamine (MDMA), methamphetamine (MA), 3,4-methylenedioxy amphetamine (MDA) and 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-ethylamphetamine (MDEA) was developed using an in-house constructed semi-automated portable capillary electrophoresis instrument (CE) with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C(4)D). Arginine 10mM adjusted to pH4.5 with acetic acid was found to be the optimal background electrolyte for the CE-C(4)D determination of these compounds. The best detection limits achieved with and without a sample preconcentration process were 10ppb and 500ppb, respectively. Substituted amphetamines were found in different seized illicit club drug tablets and urine samples collected from different suspected users. Good agreement between results from CE-C(4)D and those with the confirmation method (GC-MS) was achieved, with correlation coefficients for the two pairs of data of more than 0.99.

ABSTRACT

A retrospective surveyed was conducted on the plant of concrete with 127 workers. The secondary data about the health, the clinical and paraclinical diagnosis realized on all workers. Analysis showed that the second grade of health accounted for 40.94%, 3rd grade 49.62%, none of 1st grade and 4th grade 1.57%. A diversity of morbid included ENT diseases, maxial-odonto-facial diseases, gynecological diseases, ophtalmological disease, gastrointestinal diseases, muscle-bone-joint diseases, venerological, mental-neurological, respiratory, urological, cardiovascular diseases. 2 cases of occupational pneumocomosis were detected.

ABSTRACT

Cross-sectional study in combining with data retrospective data and unterview has determined higher levels of pollution than permissible standard: dust: 2.8mg/m3 (total dust), 1.4mg/ m3 respiratory dust, SiO2 level in dust: 15.5% - 19.6%. 43.32% of worker felt uncomfortably with higher level of dust at workplace. NO2 poisonous gas was 6.47mg/ m3 and SO2: 5.14mg/m3 – higher than permissible standard. Noise had got maximal level 98.7dBA – higher than permissible standard. Therefore, 59.06% of workers demanded an improved labour condition, 66.14% demand a strengthening of labour protection equiments and facilities.
