ABSTRACT

Glyphosate (GP, N-phosphonomethyl glycine) is one of the most popular organophosphate herbicides widely used in agricultural practices worldwide. There have been extensive reports on the biohazard attributes and hormetic impacts of GP on plant and animal systems. However, the effects of GP on plant growth-promoting microbes and its ecological relevance remain unknown. Here, we show that GP does exert a hormetic impact on Burkholderia cepacia LS-044, a rice (Oryza sativa ssp. japonica cv. Tainung 71) root endophytic isolate. We used increasing doses of ferulic acid (FA, 1-25 mM) and GP (0.5-5 mM) to test the growth and antifungal volatile production in LS-044 by electrochemical, liquid chromatographic, gas chromatographic and spectrophotometric means. GP treatment at a low dose (0.5 mM) increased FA utilization and significantly (P < 0.0001) enhanced antifungal volatile activity in LS-044. Although FA (1 mM) was rapidly utilized by LS-044, no chromatographically detectable utilization of GP was observed at tested doses (0.5-5 mM). LS-044 emitted predominant amounts of tropone in addition to moderate-to-minor amounts of diverse ketones and/or their derivatives (acetone, acetophenone, 2-butanone, 1-propanone, 1-(2-furanyl-ethanone, 1-phenyl-1-propanone and 1-(3-pyridinyl)-1-propanone), d-menthol, 2-methoxy-3-(1-methylethyl)-pyrazine, dimethyl disulfide, pyridine and ammonium carbamate when grown under GP supplement. GP hormesis on LS-044 induced phenotypic variations in O. sativa ssp. japonica cv. Tainan 11 as evident through seed germination assay. Genes involved in the transformation of FA, and a key gene encoding 5-enolpyruvylshikimate 3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) with Gly-94 and Tyr-95 residues localized at active site most likely rendering EPSPS sensitivity to GP, were detected in LS-044. This is the first report on the GP hormesis influencing morphological and metabolic aspects including volatile emission in a biocontrol bacterium that could modulate rice plant phenotype.

ABSTRACT

Recently, machine learning (ML) is being applied to various fields, including hydrology and hydraulics. The numerical models based on ML algorithms have been widely used for forecasting water levels or flowrate in different timescales. Especially in estuary areas where the hydrodynamic regime becomes complicated, the water level forecast information in this area plays an essential role in the operation of tidal sluices. This study proposes an efficient approach using an ML model, long short-term memory (LSTM), to predict short-term water levels in tidal sluice gates from 6 to 48 hours ahead. The An Tho culvert located in the Bac Hung Hai irrigation system, the most extensive irrigation system in Vietnam, was selected as a case study station. The high accuracy of predictive results reveals LSTM models' effectiveness in different forecasting scenarios. In the first scenario using just water level data at the prediction station, the Kling-Gupta efficiency (KGE) coefficient ranges from nearly 0.89 to 0.96. Meanwhile, in the second scenario, the combination of observed data of three gauge stations exhibited better performance with KGE coefficients ranging from just under 0.93 to 0.98 for eight forecasted cases. The findings of this study highlight the performance of LSTM models in providing high-accuracy short-period water level forecasts for areas near estuaries. These obtained results can play a vital role in the management and operation of tidal sluices in the Bac Hung Hai irrigation system, as well as a reference for the operation of other irrigation systems around the world.

ABSTRACT

We conducted a policy situation analysis in three Mekong region countries, focused on how the animal and human health systems interact to control avian influenza (AI). The study used scoping literature reviews aimed at establishing existing knowledge concerning the regulatory context. We then conducted a series of key informant interviews with national and sub-national government officials and representatives of producers and poultry farmers to understand their realities in managing the complex interface of the two sectors to control AI. We found signs of formal progress in establishing the policy and legislative frameworks needed to enable cooperation of the two sectors but a series of constraints that impede their effective operation. These included the competitive relationships involved, especially with budgetary allocations and mandates that can conflict with each other. Many local actors also view development partners (e.g., bilateral and multilateral donors) as having a dominant role in establishing these collaborations, limiting the extent to which there is local ownership of the agenda. The animal and human health sectors are not equally resourced, with the animal health sector disadvantaged in terms of surveillance and laboratory systems, human resources and financial allocations. Contrasting strategies for achieving objectives have also characterised the two sectors in recent decades, seeing a major shift towards the use of incentive-based approaches in the human health sector but very little parallel development in the animal health sector, largely dependent on command and control approaches. Successful future collaborations between the two sectors are likely to depend on better resourcing in the animal health sector, increasing local ownership of the agenda, and ensuring that both sectors can use the full range of regulatory strategies available to achieve objectives.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about risk factors for sick building symptoms (SBS) among health care workers (HCWs) who often face the workload, exposure to chemicals, and biological contaminants in the workplace. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between SBS and the symptoms among HCWs. METHODS: A total of 207 HCWs were recruited in a large hospital-based cross-sectional survey between March and June 2017, southern Vietnam. Face-to-face interviews were conducted for collecting data on demographics, SBS-related symptoms, working environments, and conditions. Indoor environmental conditions were measured. SBS scores, ranging from 0 to 24, were determined by a sum of the scores of general symptoms, mucosal irritation, and skin symptoms; multivariate regression analyses and the Lindeman, Merenda, and Gold (LMG) test were used to investigate the predictors and its impact on the SBS. Results: A mean SBS score was 9.7 (range: 1-21). Compared with males, females were more likely to report higher SBS scores (10.2 vs. 7.9, p < 0.001). Being female, atopy, varying temperature room, stuffy "bad" air dust, and dirt had higher SBS scores of 2.0; 1.8; 1.7; 1.9; 3.8, respectively. LMG test showed that dust and dirt, and stuffy "bad" air were the predominant risk factors for SBS. CONCLUSIONS: Our study reveals that working conditions are important and significantly associated with SBS. Taken together with our findings, the working condition criteria approach trained for architects, builders, owners, and maintenance of the building is highly recommended for indoor air quality improvement. Furthermore, larger-sample studies about working condition are urgently needed to better manage SBS.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii (Ab) is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen found in hospital-acquired infections including nosocomial pneumonia, especially multidrug-resistant Ab. This study aims to survey the drug resistance profiles of Ab isolated from patients in Thong Nhat Dong Nai General Hospital and assess the relationship between genotypes and antibiotic resistance; Methods: Ninety-seven Ab strains isolated from 340 lower respiratory tract specimens among pneumonia patients were used to screen the most common local carbapenemase genes. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing results and demographic data were collected and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of colistin were also determined; Results: Over 80% and 90% of Ab strains were determined as carbapenem-resistant and multidrug-resistant (MDR), respectively. Most of the strains carried carbapenemase genes, including blaOXA-51, blaOXA-23-like, blaOXA-58-like, and blaNDM-1, with proportions of 97 (100%), 76 (78.4%), 10 (10.3%), 6 (6.2%), respectively. Amongst these genes, blaOXA-23-like was the only gene which significantly influenced the resistance (p < 0.0001); and Conclusions: The severity of Ab antibiotic resistance is urgent and specifically related to carbapenemase encoding genes. Therefore, screening of MDR Ab and carbapenemase for better treatment options is necessary.

BACKGROUND: There is no scientific literature that examines radiofrequency (RF) interference from Smart Meters with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). The objective of this in vitro study was to assess any potential interference with Medtronic CIEDs (Medtronic Inc., Minneapolis, MN, USA). METHODS: In the Quebec testing, five models of Medtronic CIEDs were placed in an acrylic cylinder filled with a saline solution and faced a Landis+Gyr Smart Meter or Router (Landis+Gyr AG, Zug, Switzerland). The distance between CIEDs and the meter casing or router antenna was 10 cm. The Meter's normal operating conditions were modified to artificially set the number of impulsions at an abnormally high level (one, two, and three impulses per second). Each scenario was repeated one to five times, for 1 minute each. In the U.S. testing, 6 cm and 15 cm (∼2.25' and ∼6') separated the six models of Medtronic CIEDs from the Schlumberger Smart Meter (Itron Inc., Liberty Lake, WA, USA), which generally sent out a 96-bit Standard Consumption Message over 3 seconds. The transmission varied in frequencies along with the interval between cycles. RESULTS: A total of 6,966 RF transmissions were completed during the 34 tests conducted in Quebec. In the United States, the CIED was exposed to the meter for 10 minutes to provide a minimum of 200 completed RF transmissions. No interference was observed in worst-case scenarios (testing of meters and CIEDs at their performance limits). CONCLUSIONS: Landis+Gyr Smart Meters/Routers and Schlumberger Smart Meters do not interfere with the functioning of the Medtronic CIEDs tested, when placed, respectively, 10 cm and 6 cm and 15 cm apart.

ABSTRACT

Two experiments were carried out to assess the effects of electric and magnetic fields (EMF) on blood thyroxine (T4) in dairy cattle. In experiment 1, 16 lactating pregnant Holstein cows were exposed to 10 kV/m, 30 microTesla (microT) EMF. The animals were divided into two groups of eight animals each. Each group was exposed to EMF according to one of two treatment sequences of three periods of 28 days each. Sequence 1 was EMF OFF-ON-OFF and sequence 2 was EMF ON-OFF-ON. During the last day of each treatment period, blood samples were collected every 4 h for 24 h to estimate T4 plasma concentrations. In experiment 2, 16 nonlactating, nonpregnant, multiparous Holsteins were exposed to 10 kV/m, 30 microT EMF. The animals were divided into two groups of eight animals each. Each group was exposed to EMF according to one of the two treatment sequences described above, except that each period amounted to the number of days corresponding to one estrous cycle. During treatment, blood samples were collected every other day for T4 analysis. In both experiments, the light cycle emulated a short photoperiod (8 h light/16 h dark). During the ON periods, the animals were exposed to EMF for 16 h, 8 h of the light period plus the first 8 h of during the dark period. In experiment 1, exposed animals did not have any change in T4 plasma concentrations due to treatment (P = .0968), but, the time of sample collection revealed a significant difference (P = .0012). In experiment 2, the effect of period (P = .0009) and the treatment by days interaction (P = .0003) were statistically significant. We conclude that a worst case scenario exposure of dairy cattle to 10 kV/m, 30 microT EMF influences, in a moderate fashion, the blood levels of thyroxine.

ABSTRACT

An exposure chamber was designed to study the effects of electric and magnetic fields (EMF) on oestrous cycles, hormonal profile during gestation, pineal function, quantity and quality of milk production, feed intake, and central nervous system of dairy cattle. The chamber was 15 x 10 x 3 m; and the control system was fully computerized so that the field intensities can be varied and monitored continuously, on site or remotely. During exposure to EMF, milk production, feed consumption, and health were monitored closely and blood and cerebral spinal fluid were continuously sampled. The chamber characteristics allow use of a wide range of exposure such as electric fields (0-30 kV/m) and magnetic fields (0-100 microT) at frequencies ranging from 45 to 3000 Hz.
