ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Psychological problems in children and parents related to children's atopic eczema (AE) may impede the success of treatment. We studied the question, if behavior-based parental education in groups (DPE) or standardized video-education (VPE) could enhance dermatological treatment effects and reduce skin-damaging behaviors in children and stress in their mothers. PATIENTS/METHODS: 47 mothers attending the university outpatient-clinic for dermatology and their AE-children (mean age 4 years) participated in the study. 18 mothers underwent the DPE (10 sessions), 15 mothers worked with VPE at home. Dermatological standard treatment (CG; N = 14) served as control for a 16-weeks-evaluation-period. RESULTS: AE-symptoms improved overall, but the effectiveness of the treatments differed significantly, improval with parent education and was best with VPE. Psychological problems of mothers were equally reduced with DPE and VPE. CONCLUSIONS: It is suggested that VPE is a cost effective and less time consuming method for supporting dermatological therapy of AE in children.

ABSTRACT

In a series of experimental studies on rat behavior following reconstructive surgery after gastrectomy the effects of Roux-Y-Pouch-technique (RY-P) as compared to Roux-Y (RY) alone were observed. 12 rats with RY-P and 13 rats with RY were tested on days 100-105 post surgery using the Open-Field-test paradigm. Feeding behavior and weight were additionally controlled. Data analysis of repeated measurement design (ANOVA) revealed significant group x time-interaction between type of reconstruction and exploratory behaviors (p < .01). Moreover, RY-P rats consumed more food (p < .001), had higher weight gain (p < .01), and tended to more normal defecation. Overall, results favour the more physiological type of reconstruction.

ABSTRACT

Standardized behaviour monitoring in rats is a well-suited method for the evaluation of behavioral und nutritional effects following reconstruction surgery. Using an experimental design possible side effects resulting from the original disease can be excluded, which is an important advantage compared to clinical studies. Behavioural effects can be related to changes in biological functions following surgery. After gastrectomy 10 rats were reconstructed by Roux-Y-technique and 10 other animals by oesophagoduodenal interposition. In an open-field-behaviour-test they were compared with 10 sham operated and 10 untreated controls. Differential effects can be shown by special behavioural indices.
