ABSTRACT

A case of progressive supranuclear palsy (Steele-Richardson-Olszewski syndrome; PSP) with parkinsonism and absence of gaze palsy or mental changes is reported. Neuropathological examination, apart from typical changes, showed, lack of midbrain tegmentum demyelination, marked loss of Purkinje cells and presence of hyalin-like bodies in individual neurons of the substantia nigra. Immunostaining against tau-1 protein revealed the prevalence of a diffuse reaction in locus coeruleus neurons; reflecting either different ability of these cells to accumulate straight filaments, or a various time sequence of neurofibrillary tangles formation. Ferritin immunohistochemistry demonstrated widespread microglial cell proliferation, confirming further the generalized character of CNS pathology in PSP.

ABSTRACT

A case of the bilateral trigeminal neuralgia produced by compression of the V cranial nerve roots by the branch of the anterior lower cerebral artery and post-hemorrhagic aggregates is presented. Complete recovery was obtained in the result of 2-stage, intracranial relief of the right and left trigeminal nerve roots. Neurologists share the opinion that intracranial surgical relief of the V cranial nerve root produces favourable result in case of trigeminal neuralgia resistant to pharmacotherapy.

ABSTRACT

A 54-year-old male patient is reported in whom progression of clinical manifestations, neurological signs and results of ancillary investigations suggested a cerebellopontine angle tumour in the initial stage of the disease. Further observation and additional appearance after 10 months of signs evidencing damage to other brain-stem structures made possible the diagnosis of a vascular aetiology of the pathological process.
