ABSTRACT

In high-frequency pulsed magnets, such as kickers in particle accelerators, it is essential to reduce eddy currents that could be induced in the magnet core during excitation not to distort and attenuate the magnetic field pulse. A novel iron lamination scheme with additional interlaminar insulation is proposed for the magnet core of such pulsed magnets. A laminated steel sheet core is formed by alternately stacking thin steel and insulation sheets. For application to matched kicker magnets for accelerators, test magnets with the new and conventional iron lamination were designed, assembled, and extensively evaluated. The pulsed magnetic field waveforms of two test magnets with the new lamination successfully matched to below 0.1% over the entire pulse duration, which was significantly better than those with the conventional lamination. Among the applications of the developed high-frequency pulsed magnets, beam injection kickers for the coming next generation light sources and future colliders, where suppression of the transient stored-beam oscillation during beam injection is crucial, are considered to be promising.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrate a new high-order harmonic generation mechanism reaching the "water window" spectral region in experiments with multiterawatt femtosecond lasers irradiating gas jets. A few hundred harmonic orders are resolved, giving µJ/sr pulses. Harmonics are collectively emitted by an oscillating electron spike formed at the joint of the boundaries of a cavity and bow wave created by a relativistically self-focusing laser in underdense plasma. The spike sharpness and stability are explained by catastrophe theory. The mechanism is corroborated by particle-in-cell simulations.

ABSTRACT

The first observation of sustained saturation in a free-electron laser (FEL) oscillator at perfect synchronism of an optical cavity is presented. A simultaneous measurement of FEL power and absolute detuning length of the optical cavity ( deltaL) has clearly shown that the FEL efficiency becomes maximum at deltaL = 0.0+/-1 microm, although it has been considered that only a transient state exists at deltaL = 0 due to the well-known laser lethargy effect. The observed efficiency detuning curve is well reproduced by our numerical simulation including a small shot-noise effect.

ABSTRACT

Forty alkaloids were detected and characterized from skin extracts of high- and low-elevation populations of the poison frog Dendrobates histrionicus from northwestern Colombia. Combined gc/ms with NH3 or ND3 in a chemical ionization mode detected protonated parent ions and determined the number of exchangeable NH and OH hydrogens. Six previously unknown dendrobatid alkaloids were characterized. Two were 2,5-disubstituted pyrrolidines, which included pyrrolidine 197B, a trans-2-butyl-5-pentylpyrrolidine, while a third was a 2,6-dipentylpiperidine. Indolizidines 239AB and 239CD had the same relative configuration as the parent alkaloid 223AB [(5E,9E)3-butyl-5-propylindolizidine] and contained, respectively, a omega-hydroxy group in the propyl or butyl side chain. The profiles of alkaloids in the new northern populations of D. histrionicus are typical of the species in containing a set of about eight histrionicotoxins, in marked contrast to a related species, Dendrobates lehmanni, which does not contain histrionicotoxins.
