ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Draw up an evaluative approach to the diagnostic contribution of nocturnal oximetry associated with a parental questionnaire in children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Analysis of a parental questionnaire on sleep patterns and oximetry recording made in children with ATH. The results of the oximetry were compared to the data gathered from the questionnaire. RESULTS: Of the 342 children (age range, 3 months to 14 years), 209 permanent snorers, 115 occasional snorers, and 18 non-snorers were identified. The proportion of positive oximetry readings varied from 31.6 to 0% and the difference was significant between the first group and the two others (p<0.001). The data were correlated for four symptoms, including snoring and sleep apnea. The absence of snoring always gave a negative oximetry reading. CONCLUSIONS: In cases of ATH, a negative questionnaire can predict that oximetry will not be useful and if necessary advise for a polysomnography for an exclusion diagnosis. In contrast, a positive questionnaire followed by a positive oximetry argues in favor of the polysomnography not being useful.

ABSTRACT

We report 3 cases of AIDS complicated by muscular disease: 2 with acute polymyositis and 1 with severe noninflammatory myopathy. Tests for an alternative infectious etiology were negative. HIV may well have a tropism for muscle tissue.

ABSTRACT

In order to investigate the clinical oral manifestations associated with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and AIDS-related conditions, 922 male subjects were studied in a closed community (inmates). 669 were drug-abusers, 24 homosexual or bisexual men, 86 drug-abusers and homosexual or bisexual men, 143 without risk behaviour. Only 120 patients had antibodies to human immunodeficiency virus type I. All were throughly examined for evidence of oral disorders. The major finding was that almost all with AIDS and AIDS-related complex had oral manifestations one AIDS-patient was affected with hairy leukoplakia.

ABSTRACT

An epidemiological study into the prevalence and incidence of anti-H.I.V. antibody seropositivity in closed communities produced preliminary data on 746 subjects, the majority of whom admitted potentially dangerous behaviour. These results demonstrated that residence in a closed community in which one can limit the use of drugs and sexual contacts reduces the risk of infection.

ABSTRACT

A precipitating antigen-antibody system was detected by immunodiffusion using acute and convalescent sera from patients with non-A, non-B (NANB) viral hepatitis in which the diagnosis was made by exclusion. The system showed identity with reference sera. Positivity for antigen was found in 5 out 13 patients with acute NANB hepatitis, but also in 3 out 8 patients with acute A hepatitis, in 6 out of 15 with acute B hepatitis and in 95 out of 221 voluntary blood donors. Antibody was detected in all the above mentioned categories of patients and also in normal subjects in percentages ranging from 9.1 to 25.0 percent. The lack of specificity observed is in contrast with results of other reported serological NANB related systems.

ABSTRACT

Evaluated the diagnostic adequacy of the Mini-Mult in a psychiatric population and a presumed normal sample as well as the descriptive accuracy of statements inferred from the Mini-Mult profiles of the patient sample. The Mini-Mult showed significant correlations with the full MMPI for all scales except Hs in a male psychiatric inpatient sample and for all scales except F, Hs and D in a female nursing school applicant sample. Nevertheless, in both samples there are significant mean differences on most scales when the two techniques are compared. For the psychiatric sample in cases where both the Mini-Mult and MMPI give profiles codeable into Marks and Seeman (1963) profile types, the Mini-Mult yields only limited prediction of profile type and descriptive statements. For the student nurse applicant sample, there is good agreement (86%) between the techniques when used only to screen for possible pathology. The Mini-Mult seemed to have some promise in applications involving the screening of presumed normals, but showed little success in predicting diagnostic and descriptive features as inferred from the full MMPI.
