ABSTRACT

Accurate origin determination of seafood is crucial for consumer trust and safety. This study was performed to develop a machine learning-based single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis technique to determine the origin of Acetes species in salted small-shrimp products. Mitochondrial DNA (COI and 16S rRNA) analysis revealed genetic variations among species and origins. Eight candidate SNPs were identified, six of which were developed into markers for genotyping analysis. Using the developed markers, an SNP array was created and SNP data from salted small-shrimp samples were obtained. Machine learning analysis using a supervised learning algorithm achieved 100% accuracy in classifying the origin of Acetes based on SNP data. This method offers a reliable method for regulatory bodies to combat food fraud and ensure product integrity. The approach can be further improved by expanding the data set to encompass a wider range of species and origins. This study highlights the potential of SNP analysis and machine learning for ensuring seafood authenticity and promoting sustainable practices.

ABSTRACT

Background: This study examines the relationship between physical and mental function and frailty, independently and in conjunction with polypharmacy, among older adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study consisted of 368 participants aged ≥60 years. The participants were categorized into either robust or frail groups using Fried's frailty phenotype. Physical functions were assessed using grip strength, gait speed, Timed Up and Go (TUG), the Five Chair Sit to Stand Test (FCSST) and the Six-Minute Walk Test (SMWT). Mental functions were assessed using cognitive function and depression. Cognitive function was measured using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Depression was assessed with the Korean version of the Short Geriatric Depression Scale (SGDS). Results: The mean age of study population was 75.4 years. In this population, we identified 78.8% (n = 290) robust participants and 21.2% (n = 78) frail participants. The study examined frailty status (frail vs. non-frail) and frailty with and without polypharmacy using multivariate logistic regressions, adjusting for age and sex. In the logistic regression model estimating the risk of frailty, after adjustments for age, sex, BMI, and number of medications, individuals with low SMWT showed a significantly increased risk of frailty, with an odds ratio (OR) of 8.66 and a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 4.55-16.48. Additionally, global cognitive function was associated with a 1.97-fold increase in frailty risk (95% CI: 1.02-3.67). Moreover, in models adjusted for age, sex, and BMI to assess frailty risk linked to polypharmacy, the TUG, SMWT, and SGDS all showed increased risks, with ORs of 3.65 (95% CI: 1.07-12.47), 5.06 (95% CI: 1.40-18.32), and 5.71 (95% CI: 1.79-18.18), respectively. Conclusions: Physical function (SMWT, FCSST, TUG) and mental function (depression, cognition) were associated with frailty. By comprehensively examining these factors, we will gain valuable insights into frailty and enable more precise strategies for intervention and prevention.

ABSTRACT

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella enterica serovar Agona infections affect public health globally. This investigation aimed to ascertain the antimicrobial resistance profiles and molecular characteristics of Salmonella Agona isolates obtained from food-producing animals. A total of 209 Salmonella Agona isolates were recovered from mostly chickens (139 isolates), pigs (56 isolates), cattle (11 isolates), and ducks (3 isolates) between 2010 and 2020 in South Korea. In addition, these Salmonella Agona isolates were obtained from 25 slaughterhouses nationwide. Furthermore, this serotype suddenly increased in chickens in 2020. Salmonella Agona from chickens showed high resistance (69-83%) to ampicillin, streptomycin, tetracycline, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and chloramphenicol. Moreover, chicken/duck isolates (83.1%) showed significantly higher levels of MDR than cattle/pig isolates (1.5%). For molecular analysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, infrared spectroscopy biotyping, and multilocus sequence typing in combination, a total of 23 types were observed. Especially two major types, P1-III-2-13 and P1-IV-2-13, comprised 59.3% of the total isolates spreading in most farms. Moreover, Salmonella Agona sequence type (ST)13 was predominant (96.7%) among three different STs (ST13, ST11, and ST292) widely detected in chickens (94.3%) in most farms located nationwide. Taken together, MDR Salmonella Agona in chickens might pose a potential risk to public health through direct contact or the food chain.

BACKGROUND: Multinucleation is a hallmark of osteoclast formation and has a unique ability to resorb bone matrix. During osteoclast differentiation, the cytoskeleton reorganization results in the generation of actin belts and eventual bone resorption. Tetraspanins are involved in adhesion, migration and fusion in various cells. However, its function in osteoclast is still unclear. In this study, we identified Tm4sf19, a member of the tetraspanin family, as a regulator of osteoclast function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigate the effect of Tm4sf19 deficiency on osteoclast differentiation using bone marrow-derived macrophages obtained from wild type (WT), Tm4sf19 knockout (KO) and Tm4sf19 LELΔ mice lacking the large extracellular loop (LEL). We analyzed bone mass of young and aged WT, KO and LELΔ mice by µCT analysis. The effects of Tm4sf19 LEL-Fc fusion protein were accessed in osteoclast differentiation and osteoporosis animal model. RESULTS: We found that deficiency of Tm4sf19 inhibited osteoclast function and LEL of Tm4sf19 was responsible for its function in osteoclasts in vitro. KO and LELΔ mice exhibited higher trabecular bone mass compared to WT mice. We found that Tm4sf19 interacts with integrin αvß3 through LEL, and that this binding is important for cytoskeletal rearrangements in osteoclast by regulating signaling downstream of integrin αvß3. Treatment with LEL-Fc fusion protein inhibited osteoclast function in vitro and administration of LEL-Fc prevented bone loss in an osteoporosis mouse model in vivo. CONCLUSION: We suggest that Tm4sf19 regulates osteoclast function and that LEL-Fc may be a promising drug to target bone destructive diseases caused by osteoclast hyper-differentiation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This 1-year open-label extension study aimed to identify the persistent synergistic effects of allogeneic umbilical cord blood (UCB) cells and erythropoietin (EPO) in children with cerebral palsy (CP) for up to 2 years. METHODS: This open-label extension study followed children with CP who were enrolled in the previous randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial. The following groups from the first trial were maintained: (A) UCB + EPO, (B) UCB, (C) EPO, and (D) only placebo, and all the participants had continued active rehabilitation. This extended study started 3 months after termination of the first trial, which had a 1-year follow-up duration. All subjects received single additional UCB intravenous infusion at the extension baseline regardless of their initial allocation. Outcome measures were the gross motor performance measure (GMPM), gross motor function measure-66 (GMFM-66), and Bayley scales of infant development-II (BSID-II), which were followed at 3, 6, and 12 months after the extension baseline. Changes in the outcome scores from the baseline values of the previous trial and this study were analysed. RESULTS: Sixty-nine children (4.29 ± 1.28 years, M:F = 34:35) were included in this study. Each group showed improvements in the outcome measures at 12 months after additional UCB infusion compared to the baseline scores, except for GMFM and GMPM in Group C which were elevated at 3 and 6 months post-therapy. Total subject analyses did not show significant differences in the outcome measures between the four different groups at 3, 6 and 12 months after additional UCB therapy. However, patients with severe dysfunction, whose GMFCS levels were IV and V, revealed a larger improvement of the GMPM score in Group A than in Group D (Ps < 0.05) from the baseline value of the previous trial. The changes in BSID-II mental scale scores were positively correlated with the number of administered total nucleated cells per unit body weight during this one-year extension study period (r = 0.536, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that when administering UCB to treat patients with CP, combination therapy with EPO is more effective, and the effect might last as long as 2 years, especially in patients with severe impairments. ABSTRACT

Surgical techniques are gaining attention for treating physical diseases in aquaculture and aquarium fish. Sturgeon is a suitable species for surgical experiments due to its industrial significance. Maintaining homeostasis is crucial during surgical procedures, and the liver plays a major role in immune regulation. High temperature is suggested to improve physiological activity and wound healing. This study investigated differences in hepatectomy sturgeons' tolerance and histopathological responses of internal organs. Moreover, this study investigated the effects of high temperatures on wound healing and hematopoietic recovery in fish undergoing surgical procedures. The liver condition was found to play a pivotal role in the analysis, and cortisol levels were affected by anesthesia. The results showed that high temperature facilitated hematopoietic recovery and wound healing, but excessive induction of physiological activity caused damage. Managing high temperatures and liver conditions induced a remarkable improvement in wound healing. However, anesthesia itself can be a significant stressor for fish, and wound healing requires a greater amount of energy. Further research is needed to understand the stress factors caused by surgical procedures and anesthesia and to promote animal welfare in fishery products.

ABSTRACT

Since the 2000s, the Y439 lineage of H9N2 avian influenza virus (AIV) has been the predominant strain circulating in poultry in Korea; however, in 2020, the Y280 lineage emerged and spread rapidly nationwide, causing large economic losses. To prevent further spread and circulation of such viruses, rapid detection and diagnosis through active surveillance programs are crucial. Here, we developed a novel H9 rRT-PCR assay that can detect a broad range of H9Nx viruses in situations in which multiple lineages of H9 AIVs are co-circulating. We then evaluated its efficacy using a large number of clinical samples. The assay, named the Uni Kor-H9 assay, showed high sensitivity for Y280 lineage viruses, as well as for the Y439 lineage originating in Korean poultry and wild birds. In addition, the assay showed no cross-reactivity with other subtypes of AIV or other avian pathogens. Furthermore, the Uni Kor-H9 assay was more sensitive, and had higher detection rates, than reference H9 rRT-PCR methods when tested against a panel of domestically isolated H9 AIVs. In conclusion, the novel Uni Kor-H9 assay enables more rapid and efficient diagnosis than the "traditional" method of virus isolation followed by subtyping RT-PCR. Application of the new H9 rRT-PCR assay to AI active surveillance programs will help to control and manage Korean H9 AIVs more efficiently.

ABSTRACT

This study detected two potential pathogens, Vibro parahaemolyticus, which causes acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), in fishing bait in South Korea. However, their infectious nature was not confirmed, possibly due to the degradation caused by freezing/thawing or prolonged storage under frozen conditions. While infectivity was not confirmed in this study, there is still a significant risk of exposure to these aquatic products. Furthermore, fishing bait and feed should be handled with caution as they are directly exposed to water, increasing the risk of disease transmission. In Australia, cases of WSSV infection caused by imported shrimp intended for human consumption have occurred, highlighting the need for preventive measures. While freezing/thawing is a method for inactivating pathogens, there are still regulatory and realistic issues to be addressed.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The role of medical staff gained immense significance in the context of the prolonged coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. However, few studies had explored the impact of simulation-based education on the ability of nursing students to care for the patients of COVID-19. This study provided nursing students with simulation-based education in caring for the patients of COVID-19 and confirmed its effectiveness. METHODS: This study used a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The participants were recruited from the nursing departments of two universities in Korea through convenience sampling. A total of 79 participants were included: 37 in the intervention group and 42 in the control group. The intervention group received four sessions of simulation training based on the National League for Nursing Jeffries simulation theory. RESULTS: The intervention group showed an improvement compared to the control group in terms of knowledge related to coronavirus, confidence in performing infection control skills, and perception of preparedness for caring for the patients of COVID-19, with a high-level of satisfaction and self-confidence in learning. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of anxiety. CONCLUSION: This simulation is expected to be a significant strategy for alleviating the global burden in terms of staff safety and patient outcomes by improving the competencies of prospective medical staff in responding to pandemics.

ABSTRACT

Cervi cornu extracts have been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of various disorders, including osteoporosis. However, since it is not easy to separate the active ingredients, limited research has been conducted on their functional properties. In this study, we extracted the low-molecular-weight (843 Da) collagen NP-2007 from cervi cornu by enzyme hydrolyzation to enhance absorption and evaluated the therapeutic effect in monosodium iodoacetate-induced rat osteoarthritis (OA) model. NP-2007 was orally administered at 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg for 21 days. We showed that the production of matrix metalloproteinase-2, -3, and -9, decreased after NP-2007 treatment. The levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, and prostaglandin E2 were also reduced after treatment of NP-2007. Furthermore, the administration of NP-2007 resulted in effective preservation of both the synovial membrane and knee cartilage and significantly decreased the transformation of fibrous tissue. We verified that the treatment of NP-2007 significantly reduced the production of nitric oxide and pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6 in lipopolysaccharides-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells by regulation of the NF-kB and MAPK signaling pathways. This study indicates that NP-2007 can alleviate symptoms of osteoarthritis and can be applied as a novel treatment for OA treatment.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect that Glycine max hydrolyzed with enzymes from Bacillus velezensis KMU01 has on dextran-sulfate-sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. Hydrolysis improves functional health through the bioconversion of raw materials and increase in intestinal absorption rate and antioxidants. Therefore, G. max was hydrolyzed in this study using a food-derived microorganism, and its anti-inflammatory effect was observed. Enzymatically hydrolyzed G. max (EHG) was orally administered once daily for four weeks before DSS treatment. Colitis was induced in mice through the consumption of 5% (w/v) DSS in drinking water for eight days. The results showed that EHG treatment significantly alleviated DSS-induced body weight loss and decreased the disease activity index and colon length. In addition, EHG markedly reduced tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1ß, and IL-6 production, and increased that of IL-10. EHG improved DSS-induced histological changes and intestinal epithelial barrier integrity in mice. Moreover, we found that the abundance of 15 microorganisms changed significantly; that of Proteobacteria and Escherichia coli, which are upregulated in patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, decreased after EHG treatment. These results suggest that EHG has a protective effect against DSS-induced colitis and is a potential candidate for colitis treatment.

ABSTRACT

Wild bird avian influenza type A virus (AIV) surveillance is important for the early detection of highly pathogenic AIVs and for providing early warnings to the poultry industry and veterinary services to implement more effective control measures against these viruses. Some field samples are often found to contain more than two kinds of AIV. Correct determination of the HA/NA subtype and complete nucleotide sequences of the component viruses in those samples are often critical for timely and accurate understanding of the field situation, but it is not easy to define the genomic structure of the constituent viruses unambiguously because AIV has eight segmented genomes. In this study, with immunomagnetic beads incorporating polyclonal antibodies of chicken for subtype-specific viral enrichment, we could selectively decrease the density of one of the two constituent viruses in a sample of different subtypes, H5 and H9, artificially generated; this was represented in the changes of Ct values with subtype specific real-time RT-PCR. Following this, with NGS, we could recover nearly complete genomic sequences and arrange the consensus sequences of gene segments of the constituent viruses confidently with the quantitative variable like genome coverage, linked along the gene segments and associated with the number of viral copies in a sample.

OBJECTIVE: This paper estimates the latest trends regarding the effect of sex on driver-side or right-front passenger-side occupant fatalities in fatal crashes. The focus is on how recent model year (MY) light vehicles with advanced occupant protection technologies compare to older vehicles without these protections in terms of female fatality risk relative to males. METHODS: Data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) from 1975 to 2019 is used to calculate estimates of female fatality risk relative to males using logistic regression models and the double-pair comparison method. These estimates are calculated in various groups of MY vehicles and occupant protection systems. Occupant protection systems observed are the use of seat belts, and the availability of dual air bags, pretensioners and load limiters in the vehicles. All vehicles used include occupants age 16 to 96. Occupants studied include front-row occupants (drivers and right-front (RF) passengers). The average between drivers and RF passengers is also calculated. RESULTS: Incremental female fatality risk estimates versus males are reduced in newer MY vehicles. Incremental relative risks for female front-row occupants (average of drivers and right-front passengers) are found to be 19.9% (± 1.3) in fatal crashes in MY 1960-1999 vehicles, and 9.4% (± 2.2) percent in MY 2000-2020 vehicles. The difference in fatality risk between females and males is further reduced when looking at MY 2010-2020 vehicles (6.3 ± 5.4%) compared to MY 1960-2009 vehicles (18.3 ± 1.2%). Incremental fatality risk estimates also decrease in vehicles with newer generations of occupant protection systems regardless of MY. When occupants are belted in vehicles with the latest generation of modern occupant protection systems (dual air bags, seat belt pretensioners and load limiters), the estimated female fatality risk relative to males (average of drivers and right-front passengers) becomes 5.8% (± 3.8), which is lower than for belted occupants in vehicles without those occupant protections. CONCLUSIONS: The disparity in fatality risk between males and females for the same physical impacts is reduced for later MY vehicles, as well as vehicles with more advanced occupant protection systems.

ABSTRACT

This study confirmed the change in functional composition and alcohol-induced acute liver injury in Aloe arborescens after fermentation. An acute liver injury was induced by administration of ethanol (3 g/kg/day) to C57BL/6J mice for 5 days. A fermented A. arborescens Miller leaf (FAAL) extract was orally administered 30 minutes before ethanol treatment. After fermentation, the emodin content was approximately 13 times higher than that of the raw material. FAAL extract significantly attenuated ethanol-induced aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and triglyceride increases in serum and liver tissue. Histological analysis revealed that FAAL extract inhibits inflammatory cell infiltration and fat accumulation in liver tissues. The cytochrome P450 2E1, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione (GSH), which involved in alcohol-induced oxidative stress, were effectively regulated by FAAL extract in serum and liver tissues, except for GSH. FAAL also maintained the antioxidant defense system by upregulating heme oxygenase 1 and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 protein expression. In addition, FAAL extract inhibited the decrease in alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase activity, which promoted alcohol metabolism and prevented the activation of inflammatory response. Our results suggest that FAAL could be used as a potential therapeutic agent for ethanol-induced acute liver injury.

ABSTRACT

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) has been used for food and applied in Ayurvedic medicine in India for thousands of years. With a reputation for strong anti-inflammatory properties, it has been used for to treat colds, migraines, nausea, arthritis, and high blood pressure in China and Southeast Asia. The physiological activity of ginger is attributed to its functional components, including gingerol and shogaol, and their derivatives. Aim of the study: We aimed to investigate the effects of 8- and 10-shogaol and their bioactive signaling mechanisms in a dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model. The anti-colitis efficacy of 6-, 8-, and 10-derivatives of gingerol and shogaol was comparatively analyzed. Materials and methods: Colitis was induced by providing mice with drinking water containing 5% DSS (w/v) for 8 days. The 6-, 8-, and 10-derivatives of gingerol and shogaol were orally administered for two weeks at a dose of 30 mg/kg. Changes in body weight and disease activity index were measured. The levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, iNOS and COX-2, as well as the phosphorylation of NF-κB were analyzed using ELISA, PCR, or western blotting. Mucin expression and mRNA levels were measured using alcian blue staining and PCR, respectively. The tight-junction-associated proteins occludin and ZO-1 were assessed using immunohistological staining. Results: The 6-, 8-, and 10-derivatives of gingerol and shogaol exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by regulating NF-κB signaling. Among the compounds administered, 10-shogaol was the most effective against DSS-induced inflammation. Comparative analysis of the chemical structure showed that shogaol, a dehydrated analog of gingerol, was more effective. 6- and 10-shogaol showed similar effects on DSS-induced morphological changes in the colonic mucus layer, mucin expression, and tight junction proteins. Conclusions: 6-, 8-, and 10-Gingerol and 6-, 8-, and 10-shogaol significantly improved the clinical symptoms and intestinal epithelial barrier damage in DSS-induced colitis in mice. The derivatives effectively inhibited DSS-induced inflammation through the regulation of NF-κB signaling. Moreover, 10-shogaol showed the most potent anti-inflammatory effect among the six compounds used in this study. The results indicate that 8- and 10-shogaol, both main ingredients in ginger, may serve as therapeutic candidates for the treatment of colitis.

ABSTRACT

Background: The percentage of older adults living alone is rapidly increasing, improving the health status and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in this group is becoming a more significant public health issue. This study aimed to examine the changes in the HRQoL of older South Korean adults living alone and identify the factors that affect their HRQoL. Methods: A longitudinal study design was followed. Data were collected at baseline and 1-year follow-up. Participants consisting of 789 older adults living alone in S*City aged>65 years completed a cohort survey regarding health status and HRQoL from August 2018 to August 2019. Trained interviewers conducted face-to-face interviews with the participants using a validated questionnaire (physical health, mental health, social health, and HRQoL). Generalized estimating equations were used to assess the change in health status and the interaction effect of time and gender. Then, a stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors related to HRQoL. Results: Time differences were observed in the subjective evaluation of health status (SEH), IPAQ scores, frailty, nutritional status, and depression. Gender differences were observed in the SEH, IPAQ, frailty, loneliness, depression, and social support. The interaction between time and gender was observed in the IPAQ and HRQoL. At baseline, SEH, depressive symptoms, gender, frailty, and age were associated with HRQoL. After one year, HRQoL was associated with SEH, frailty, depressive symptoms, cost of living, suicidal thoughts, gender, social support, loneliness, and suicide attempts. Conclusion: Our results highlight that HRQoL is associated with physical health, mental health, and social support. Future detailed studies are needed to determine whether governments and communities can prevent depression, loneliness, and suicidal thoughts through psychological support and provide economic support to improve the quality of life of older adults living alone.

ABSTRACT

Social capital (SC) has been documented to effectively reduce the spread of diseases, including COVID-19; however, research pertaining to SC and COVID-19 vaccination in Korea is lacking. This cross-sectional study conducted in the city of Wonju, Gangwon Province, Korea (n = 1,096) examined the differences in COVID-19 vaccine trust and hesitancy considering individual characteristics and investigated the effects of SC on COVID-19 vaccine trust and hesitancy. SC was measured based on 14 items pertaining to social trust, network, and norms. Responses regarding COVID-19 screening history, vaccine trust, and vaccine hesitancy were also assessed. SC scores did not differ between sexes, but differed significantly according to age and household income; thus, adults aged 70-79 years had the highest SC scores, and mean SC score increased significantly with income. COVID-19 vaccine trust differed significantly according to age, average household income, social organization involvement, and SC score. COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy differed significantly with age, SC score, and COVID-19 screening history. In univariate logistic regression, age, average household income, social organization involvement, and SC score were significant predictors of vaccine trust; in multivariable analysis, however, the identified predictors were age and SC. In particular, people with an SC score ≥50 were 2.660 times more likely to trust COVID-19 vaccines than those with lower scores. In multivariable analysis, age and SC were significant predictors of vaccine hesitancy. In particular, people with an SC score ≥50 were 1.400 times more likely not to be hesitant about receiving COVID-19 vaccines than people with lower scores. These results indicate that prioritizing policies to increase SC and trust in the government could boost the COVID-19 vaccination rate.

ABSTRACT

Matriptases are cell surface proteolytic enzymes belonging to the type II transmembrane serine protease family that mediate inflammatory skin disorders and cancer progression. Matriptases may affect the development of periodontitis via protease-activated receptor-2 activity. However, the cellular mechanism by which matriptases are involved in periodontitis is unknown. In this study, we examined the antiperiodontitis effects of matriptase on Porphyromonas gingivalis-derived lipopolysaccharide (PG-LPS)-stimulated human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs). Matriptase small interfering RNA-transfected HGFs were treated with PG-LPS. The mRNA and protein levels of proinflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1) were evaluated using the quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. Western blot analyses were performed to measure the levels of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/interleukin-1 (IL-1) receptor-associated kinase (IRAK)/transforming growth factor ß-activated kinase 1 (TAK1), p65, and p50 in PG-LPS-stimulated HGFs. Matriptase downregulation inhibited LPS-induced proinflammatory cytokine expression, including the expression of IL-6, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and IL-Iß. Moreover, matriptase downregulation inhibited PG-LPS-stimulated MMP-1 expression. Additionally, we confirmed that the mechanism underlying the effects of matriptase downregulation involves the suppression of PG-LPS-induced IRAK1/TAK1 and NF-κB. These results suggest that downregulation of matriptase PG-LPS-induced MMP-1 and proinflammatory cytokine expression via TLR4-mediated IRAK1/TAK1 and NF-κB signaling pathways in HGFs.
