Ionic conduction in ammonia functionalised closo-dodecaborates MB12H11NH3 (M = Li and Na).

Metal hydroborates and their derivatives have been receiving attention as potential solid-state ion conductors for battery applications owing to their impressive electrochemical and mechanical characteristics. However, to date only a fraction of these compounds has been investigated as solid-state electrolytes. Here, MB12H11NH3 (M = Li and Na) hydroborates are synthesized and investigated as electrolyte materials for all-solid-state batteries. The room temperature α-NaB12H11NH3 was structurally solved in P212121 (a = 7.1972(3) Å, b = 9.9225(4) Å, and c = 14.5556(5) Å). It shows a polymorphic structural transition near 140 °C to cubic Fm3̄m. LiB12H11NH3 and NaB12H11NH3 exhibit cationic conductivities of σ(Li+) = 3.0 × 10-4 S cm-1 and σ(Na+) = 1.2 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 200 °C. Hydration is found to improve ionic conductivity of the hydroborates. It is presumed that modest ionic conductivities could be due to a lack of significant re-orientational dynamics in the crystal structure resulting from the presence of the bulky -NH3 group in the anion.

Symptomatic appendiceal intussusception-rare pitfall of the historical inversion technique.

Appendiceal intussusception is a rare condition with an unknown incidence of clinical presentation, and an estimated incidence of 0.01% is based on a histological study only. It presents a diagnostic challenge with lack of standardized management strategies, and its description in literature is limited to case reports and series. Clinical presentation is often variable and nonspecific; it is uncommon to have a definitive preoperative diagnosis. Iatrogenic appendiceal intussusception can occur as a result of the historical simple inversion or inversion-ligation appendicectomy technique, but it is seldom reported to cause symptoms. We present a case of symptomatic appendiceal intussusception diagnosed preoperatively on both computed tomography and colonoscopy prior to proceeding with elective definitive surgery in a patient with no reported prior history of appendicectomy.

Caring in prison: the intersubjective web of professional relationships.

In this paper, we present a synthesis of two doctoral theses where links are made between the intersubjective, relational dynamics seen in clinical supervision, and applied in practice to a framework for emotional labor in prison nurses. We explore the nature of intersubjectivity, from nursing and psychotherapeutic perspectives, and discuss the way in which it impacts on and influences relationships between nurses, prisoner patients, prison officers, and organizations within prison healthcare settings. The impact of this intersubjectivity is illustrated through the exploration of an intersubjective web that is created and informs interaction between the key actors within the prison nurse's practice, i.e., prison officers, prisoner patients, and the organization. We suggest that by being cognizant of the intersubjective web that influences these interactions, a more meaningful understanding of practice and relationships can be achieved. This deeper understanding can then be utilized to develop practitioners both professionally and personally. We conclude by promoting regular, formal clinical supervision as an ideal space within which to explore the way in which this intersubjective web influences relationships, impacts on emotional labor, and subsequently patient care and staff well being.
