ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to relationship analysis between the karyometrical parameters of the laryngeal mucosa and the morphometrical states as well as the morphometrical comparison among the normal epithelium, precancerous lesions and cancer of the larynx. The following nuclear parameters were assessed: area, equivalent diameter, length, width, perimeter, convex area and perimeter, roundness, elongation and fulfillment. The relationship between karyometrical parameters and morphometrical lesions were found to be statistically significant. In some cases of the measurements there was no significant difference between the mild dysplasia cells and the superficial layers of the normal epithelium.

ABSTRACT

The authors retrospective analyzed the frequency of AB0 blood groups of 205 patients with laryngeal cancer treated in 1996-1997 in the II Laryngology Clinic Silesian Medical Academy in Zabrze. Blood groups were separately analyzed in cases of epiglottis cancer (n = 120) and glottis cancer (n = 85). The frequency of A, B, 0, AB blood groups was compared with that in 5168 individuals (blood giver) living in South Poland. The differences among the blood groups were not significant.

ABSTRACT

The main problems of treatment of head and neck cancer patient are envisaged in that article. The palliative care principles together with treatment of chronic cancer pain should be not only well-known for family and hospices doctors, who care for patients in terminal stage very frequently, but for head and neck surgeons as well. Insufficient knowledge of cancer pain treatment results in permanent patient's suffering due to pain persistence. The latest theories and viewpoints on treatment of chronic cancer pain with analgetic ladder and adjuvant drugs in particular are described. Patient with head and neck cancer in the terminal stage are more interested in high quality of life assurance than in putting therapy with all possible side-effects.

ABSTRACT

The authors presented own results concerning complications in wound healing after total laryngectomies. 59 total laryngectomies and 4 pharyngo-laryngectomies were performed. In 18 cases local and systemic complications were observed. Pharyngo-cutaneous fistulas developed in 15 patients. Therapeutic management was successful in all cases.

ABSTRACT

In the paper by the authors the case of big size pleomorphic adenoma of the parapharyngeal space was presented. The tumors was taken out without any difficulties by transcervical approach with splitting mandibulae and cutting the muscles of the mouth bottom with wide exposure of the parapharyngeal space. This way of operations is considered and proved us a practicable method concerning the localization of the tumor.

ABSTRACT

The preliminary results of activity changes of antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase) in erythrocyte in 19 patients with laryngeal cancer were presented. Enzymes activity in patients was signified three times: before surgery, before and after radiotherapy. During Co-60-therapy patients received leaven preparation of selenium CE-ROSEL in dose 100 micrograms Se/day. Obtained results showed increase of enzymes activity after CE-ROSEL supplementation. This changes are probably the result of selenium influence on protected mechanism before the free radicals.
