ABSTRACT

We show theoretical and experimental characterizations of a nanostructured gradient-index lens. The elliptical lens is a nonguiding element fabricated using the mosaic method, which is widely used for the fabrication of photonic crystal fibers. For the first time we show experimental data in the optics regime that confirm the effective medium approximation for discrete mosaic structures with subwavelength feature size. This opens the door for the development of general asymmetric gradient-index materials.

ABSTRACT

A patient was observed who came with the following symptoms persisting for six months: paraesthesia in the lower and upper limbs, weakening of muscle strength, difficulties in walking. The high value of the mean cell volume in blood morphologic examination called attention to the possibility of vitamin B12 deficiency which had not yet manifested itself as anaemia. Further studies confirmed this suggestion. As the result of the treatment with vitamin B12 full normalization of the nervous system condition and results of examinations was achieved.

ABSTRACT

Poor electrical stability of the recording electrode contact is often responsible for unstable recording conditions in extratympanic electrocochleography (ECochG). We present a new method with a large contact area formed by conductive fluid effectively penetrating the non-conductive film of wax and epidermis down to conductive tissue. The need for special cleaning of the external auditory meatus, often involving uncomfortable scratching of the sensitive area close to the tympanic membrane, has been eliminated, reducing the risk of infection and markedly improving the patient's test tolerance. Stable electrical contact improves the recording quality. We discuss a simplified clinical method, a new type of electrode, and patient risk factors as a result of possible accidental electrode movement.

ABSTRACT

Among the organ involvements complicating acute leukaemias infiltrations in the visual organ are less frequent. A case is described of acute medullary leukaemia in an adult with exudate in the anterior chamber and infiltrations in the conjunctiva of the eyeball and eyelids. Chemotherapy and local radiotherapy controlled these complications.

ABSTRACT

A simple method for the assessment of central conduction time in auditory brainstem response (ABR) cases with distorted or absent wave I and the technical problems involved are discussed. New electrodes systems for extra/transtympanic recording, artifact-free acoustic stimulation and a combined recording of the large amplitude SP/AP complex and small ABR waveforms are described. The need for external adjustment of the AP/wave V amplitude ratio has been demonstrated in order to obtain the satisfactory recording.
