ABSTRACT

TiO2 nanoparticles doped with different amounts of Nd3+ (0.5, 1, and 3 wt.%) were synthetized by the sol-gel method, and evaluated as potential temperature nanoprobes using the fluorescence intensity ratio between thermal-sensitive radiative transitions of the Nd3+. XRD characterization identified the anatase phase in all the doped samples. The morphology of the nanoparticles was observed with SEM, TEM and HRTEM microscopies. The relative amount of Nd3+ in TiO2 was obtained by EDXS, and the oxidation state of titanium and neodymium was investigated via XPS and NEXAFS, respectively. Nd3+ was present in all the samples, unlike titanium, where besides Ti4+, a significantly amount of Ti3+ was observed; the relative concentration of Ti3+ increased as the amount of Nd3+ in the TiO2 nanoparticles increased. The photoluminescence of the synthetized nanoparticles was investigated, with excitation wavelengths of 350, 514 and 600 nm. The emission intensity of the broad band that was associated with the presence of defects in the TiO2, increased when the concentration of Nd3+ was increased. Using 600 nm for excitation, the 4F7/2→4I9/2, 4F5/2→4I9/2 and 4F3/2→4I9/2 transitions of Nd3+ ions, centered at 760 nm, 821 nm, and 880 nm, respectively, were observed. Finally, the effect of temperature in the photoluminescence intensity of the synthetized nanoparticles was investigated, with an excitation wavelength of 600 nm. The spectra were collected in the 288-348 K range. For increasing temperatures, the emission intensity of the 4F7/2→4I9/2 and 4F5/2→4I9/2 transitions increased significantly, in contrast to the 4F3/2→4I9/2 transition, in which the intensity emission decreased. The fluorescence intensity ratio between the transitions I821I880=F5/24I49/2F43/2I49/2 and I760I880=F47/2I49/2F43/2I49/2 were used to calculate the relative sensitivity of the sensors. The relative sensitivity was near 3% K-1 for I760I880 and near 1% K-1 for I821I880.

ABSTRACT

An uncommon emissive pseudotetranuclear compound, {[Au2(C3H6NS2)2][Au(C3H6NS2)2]2(PF6)2}, was synthesized and characterized in terms of its structure and optical properties. The synthesis produced a crystalline compound composed of four gold atoms with two different oxidation states (Au+ and Au3+) in the same crystalline structure. The title complex belonged to a triclinic crystalline system involving the centrosymmetric P1̅ space group. X-ray diffractometry and vibrational spectroscopy (infrared, Raman, and SERS) were used for structural characterization of the new crystal. The vibrational spectroscopy techniques supported the X-ray diffraction results and confirmed the presence of bonds including Au-Au and Au-S. Optical characterization performed using UV-vis spectroscopy showed that under ultraviolet excitation, the emissive crystalline complex presented characteristic broad luminescent bands centered at 420 and 670 nm.

ABSTRACT

Temperature measurements ranging from a few degrees to a few hundreds of Kelvin are of great interest in the fields of nanomedicine and nanotechnology. Here, we report a new ratiometric luminescent thermometer using thermally excited state absorption of the Eu(3+) ion. The thermometer is based on the simple Eu(3+) energy level structure and can operate between 180 and 323 K with a relative sensitivity ranging from 0.7 to 1.7% K(-1). The thermometric parameter is defined as the ratio between the emission intensities of the (5)D0 → (7)F4 transition when the (5)D0 emitting level is excited through the (7)F2 (physiological range) or (7)F1 (down to 180 K) level. Nano and microcrystals of Y2O3:Eu(3+) were chosen as a proof of concept of the operational principles in which both excitation and detection are within the first biological transparent window. A novel and of paramount importance aspect is that the calibration factor can be calculated from the Eu(3+) emission spectrum avoiding the need for new calibration procedures whenever the thermometer operates in different media.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed at evaluating the thermographic changes associated with localized exercise in young and elderly subjects. An exercise protocol using 1 kg load was applied during 3 min to the knee flexors of 14 elderly (67 +/- 5 years) and 15 young (23 +/- 2 years) healthy subjects. The posterior thigh's skin temperature of the exercised limb and contralateral limb were measured by infrared thermography on pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise, and during the 10-min period post-exercise. Difference (p < 0.01) between elderly and young subjects was observed on pre-exercise temperature. Although differences were not observed between pre-exercise and immediately post-exercise temperature in the exercised limb, thermographic profile displayed heat concentration in exercised areas for both groups. Temperature reduction was only observed for the young group on the 10-min post-exercise (p < 0.05) in the exercised limb (30.7 +/- 1.7 to 30.3 +/- 1.5 degrees C). In contrast, there was a temperature reduction post-exercise (p < 0.01) in the contralateral limb for both groups. These results present new evidences that elderly and young subjects display similar capacity of heat production; however, the elderly subjects presented a lower resting temperature and slower heat dissipation. This work contributes to improve the understanding about temperature changes in elderly subjects and may present implications to the sports and rehabilitation programs.
