ABSTRACT
Epidemiological data and results of molecular studies suggest that human papillomavirus has been considered a risk factor in upper respiratory tract cancers. 10 out of 23 studied cases of laryngeal carcinoma revealed presence of HPV DNA (43.5%). The PCR and Hybrid Capture II test were used for the detection of viral DNA.

The Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome consists of a triad of symptoms: peripheral facial nerve paralysis, congenital "lingua plicata" and noninflammatory facial oedema. The authors present 2 cases with complete picture of this syndrome and some review of the literature.

The authors present 26 cases of malignant lymphoma hospitalized in E.N.T. Clinic in Warsaw for the period of 1985-1994. Results of aspiration biopsy in all presented cases were not-diagnostic. Patients were hospitalized for further diagnostics. This fact caused prolongation of diagnostic procedure.

Experience with 130 patients requiring a lateral rhinotomy is reported. It is concluded that excellent surgical exposure is assured by this approach and that minimal postoperative complications are attributable to the incision. An understanding of the advantages and disabilities associated with each of several extensions may help to the surgeon to tailor the approach to individual case. The lateral rhinotomy approach allows wide access to the nose, some elements of skull base, the nasopharynx and the paranasal sinuses for removal of benign and malignant lesions.

Anterior (ar) and posterior (pr) active rhinomanometry is the most common technique for assessment of nasal resistancy. The curve presents the interdependence of physiological transnasal pressure and air nasal flow. Following the Versick and Clement polynominal mathematical model (delta P = K0+K1V+K2V2,0) as well as the Broms polar coordinate model best fit the recorder pressure flow data. Computer simultaneously draws the pressure/flow curve and calculates resistance at particular pressure points (75, 150, 300 Pa in ar and 50, 75, 100 Pa in pr). The paper also presents indications for application of rhinomanometry and methodology of its execution.

Inverted papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses is an unusual benign neoplasm that has the propensity for local tissue destruction and an association with malignant degeneration. The tumor represents an inverted growth of epithelium rather than outward proliferation. Surgical excision is the recommended treatment though the aggressiveness of the approach has varied. Transkanal local excision has been associated with a high recurrence rate. Lateral rhinotomy with removal of the lateral nasal wall and wide local excision has a low recurrence rate and has been recommended treatment by most authors since 1975. We present series of 18 patients treated over eleven years period. All patients underwent lateral rhinotomy. The recurrence rate in our group is 0% with a mean 4, 2 years follow-up.
